Fallout 3

I do not mind spoilers! It would be great if someone (especially a fan of FO1 and FO2) gave a detailed review of the game, even if it had to be put in spoilers. A lot of old fans of the series cannot yet decide weather to invest in the game or not.

Have you looked at the player reviews on gamespot.com? The majority are very positive but there are a minority of strongly negative reviews too, which seem to be mostly from fans of the previous games. I have avoided everything but skim-reading reviews though cos I don't want the spoilers, but it would probably be a fairly useful thing for you to read.

I can't speak for fans of the originals but I will say that Oblivion fans will be pleased with this game, as it takes the general game mechanics of Oblivion and tweaks them generally for the better. Don't worry though as it is not the same game as Oblivion, in particular the character interaction is far better. As for voice acting I should say that it neither makes nor breaks a game for me, it could be better in Fallout 3 but I couldn't care less. It is just a minor thing like graphics, I am far more interested in immersion. The game is immersive, you do feel more involved with NPCs, and your actions have consequences to a greater degree than in Oblivion. You can more or less do whatever you want, and I've seen events develop in a different way to how I expected them to.

As far as I can tell you won't be able to complete the game without engaging in some kind of combat, and with that in mind I suppose this is an 'action RPG'. But that does not mean that combat is the alpha and omega of the game - having a strong personality allows you to do things that you could not do if you invested in say, raw power. My personal opinion though is that a game that you could complete most of simply through communication would not be a very fun one; I believe this because you get to select your characters attributes, and you select your dialogue options, meaning that it comes down to pre-selected stats and probability which you can weight considerably. There is a benefit to being good at every aspect of the game and the fun for me is in compromising and adapting to circumstances. For instance I am not sufficiently skilled in repair to fix my equipment beyond a certain point, and I will fix this on my next level-up as it is - I think - my most pressing concern.

The negative things that I have experienced so far are a slightly inefficient interface (this isn't helped by being unfamiliar with the purpose of items), and frequent crashes (which have been reduced by installing new drivers and lowering the graphics). Anything else I could say negatively would be nit-picking. I've only played it one night though, and my opinion will change, but for now it is pretty much what I had expected and hoped for.

:goodjob:

I've spent all my time on the official forms, but now I will surely make a visit to gamespot.com! Munch, thank you, I hope you keep them coming.

I think I've decided: ask around my friends which of them bought the game and ask to lend a copy for a few days.

No problem. The official forums had too many spoilers for me, I want to determine for myself what makes a good character build, and I certainly don't want to be told what quests there are!

You might not realise but for the PC version you need the dvd to play...

I got that covered. All I need is a bug-free CD.

Okay. Any tips on buying an English verion of the game with guaranteed delivery to Switzerland?

For some reason my game starts fine without inserting the disc. I'm not using any cracks either

I'm starting the game directly with Fallout3.exe, using FalloutLauncher.exe requires the disc

Seconded. The game crashes a lot for me, but turning the graphics down and installing new drivers seems to have helped.

Pretty much everything is as good or better than it was in Oblivion. The repair system is quite clever, and being over-encumbered isn't as bad as it used to be. I don't want to say too much in case it spoils it for some people.

Oh, and those damn super mutants ...

Oh yeah the game crashes for me too. But it really just reminds me of the crashes in Oblivion. Thank goodness for autosave though!

Fallout 3 seems veeeery interesting, but I'm not sure if my computer is powerful enough to run it. So could someone please tell if it can? Info about my computer:

Processor: Mobile AMD Sempron Processor 3800+
RAM: 4GB
Graphics: ATI Radeon X1250

Plan to get this for the PS3 when my current mountain of work has been finished... I've heard the PS3 version is the glitchiest of the three but I'm not especially fond of SecuRom so it'll have to do.

No chance. Sorry.

It only crashed once for me after I played it(left it on during breaks) for 8 hrs straight.
Still, alot of people on the bethesda boards experience alot of crashes and glitches with FO3.

You can always use a crack to remove SecuROM.

Im playing it on ps3 and i havent seen any glitches sofar, and thats about 10 hours of playing i guess. I did experience a bug during the
GOAT test in the beginning but other that that its been smooth sailings.
However some say that the ps3 version doesnt look quite as good as the other versions, but it still looks great though.

Well, from my time with it so far(and I havnt even touched the main quest becuase I feel its already been a little smeared and ruined by the pre-game vids) I can say taht the interface is still a wonky POS, and the button mapping still doesnt work in reverse just like oblivion, other than that its absolutely solid. Theres nothing more satistying than having like ten health left with a raider two feet from you about to mash you with a bat, and then you pull u your hunting rifle in VATS and plaster his head against a nearby wall.

In the first ten minutes of the game I found a random merchant, got like ten different peices of armor, killed three raiders and got a flamer and found vault 106(which I am currently back in after a while). The armor variety is nice, and I like how it all serves some kind of function by adding various stat boosts and stuff. And above all that, it all looks cool, it was hard to choose what to wear just becuase it all looks so damn cool. The weopon variety is nice, I especially like the very traditional good ol' hunting rifle, and the games difficulty basically forces you to use VATS, which is a good thing. Will prolly post more later.

It actually blue screened for me when I did that. But I really only have time to play in several hour intervals a day between WoW and web surfing.

I found a mini-nuke, only one, in a certain location I will not name and I found a Fat man launcher in another location that shall remain unamed, and Im only level four. I have to say to, Ive already killed a bunch of super mutants which is pretty dissapointing....I thought they were supposed to be hella tough.

There are varieties of super mutant, at least there are plain 'super mutants' and 'super mutant brutes' which are quite a bit harder.

Thanks for the info.

It'll probably still look better than on my computer, and I've played other "glitchy PS3 version" games before with no problem so I'm not too bothered.
