Does anyone know if BTS will run on Underpowered Computers the way the CIV IV basic game does? I use a 2.8 MHz machine with 256 MB RAM and a 64MB graphic card (no T&L). Basic CIV IV works fine (if slowly) on this, even though this is a bit less than the minimum spec for the game. Unfortunately, none of the mods work on my machine, and it was the patches that fixed up CIV IV, so I can't be sure if BTS will work, hence the questions.

The system requirements are still the same but... BtS is gonna be slower no matter what.

More than likely your firewall or internet security software is causing it. Norton is what I have and it blocks it every time. I suggest using the method that the OP (first post) has quoted me saying.

I use Norton too! I also have the exact same problem as pizza. what did you do to stop norton from blocking it?

I have CIV IV and Warlords installed on my computer, but I left the vanilla game discs at home when I moved out for university. So, the only disc I have with me now is Warlords.

My question is, do I need the discs to the vanilla game to install Beyond the Sword?

You do not need to - though you would need them if you chose to reinstall Vanilla.
Just to ensure you do not need to do the following as far as you have not yet done that:
Regarding Vanilla and Warlords: you only need to patch if they are not uptodate (1.74 and 2.13) already - BtS will install those patches if they are not yet installed but sometimes fails when 1.61 and 2.08 are not present...

install the most recent version of DirectX 9c from Microsoft
Vanilla: patch it to 1.61 (download it fresh from here)
Warlords: patch it to 2.08 (download it fresh from here)
Install Beyond the Sword, immediately patch to 3.13 (download it fresh from here).

I've installed the official and unofficial patches for BTS and it seems to work fine, but I'm having a little trouble with the fact that my foreign advisor now doesn't show how each leader feels about each other. It's just blank where "Glance" (is that the one with the grid of leaders and their diplomatic points?) used to be. I didn't have this problem before either patch was installed. Anyway, I could really use some help. I loved this feature so much.

you should also install Bhruic's supplemental patch from his thread - that restores the glance screen. The official patch removed it because it was deemed "ugly" by the powers that be

Using Bhurics patch 3.13 at the moment (I think). Still getting partisans when i raze enemy cities before emancipation arrives. This is not good news as having razed 2 enemy cities they now have 6 axemen in their capital. Very silly!!

Does the new 3.17 patch from Firaxis fix this? Didnt bhurics patch fix this or have i just been unlucky? My BTS shows patch 3.13 installed.

If i install the patch and restart game from 4000bc will the saved game use the new or old patch.

Once you patch any game, whether new or old, will use the new patch material.

Help!

I'm installing BEY and I noticed that it doesn't have a custom install option. I really need one because my laptop hard drive is completely full (300MB free space left) and I put my games on my external hard drive.

Help please! I've been installing GE for 5 hours and just got it to work, and I'm really tired and would like to get BEY installed before I go to bed (I've been up for about 26 hours ).

I also had this problem trying to install the patches. My problem was I downloaded CIV and BTS from Direct2Drive which uses a different path. C:\program files\Firaxis Games\ on Vista to be exact. I used the 3.17 version they had on their website and it matched it up perfectly for me.

Before that it kept telling me BTS was not installed and when I tried using the in-game updater it would say it was downloading the patch but eventually would crash and end up deleting a .dll and BTS would no longer work. I would then have to re-install BTS to fix it. Hoping this helps some people out there that are having the same problem.

P.S. The patch version on D2D is quite a bit larger than the normal one.

Questions to be added to the first post (and hopefully answered too ):

1) Is 3.17 backwards-compatible with 3.13? (Can I load a 3.17 save in my 3.13 Civ?)

2) If I get a crash when trying to load a 3.17 save in my 3.13 Civ, could that be because of any other reasons, beside a "no" to the above question? (Now I'm assuming the answer to 1) is "yes" and there is another reason for my crashes)
2a) Can your savegames become incompatible with earlier versions if you run the unofficial patch (Bhruic or Solver)?
2b) Can your savegames become incompatible with earlier versions if you run mods like the BUG mod? (Obviously not considering mods that introduce new gameplay elements)

Sorry not so good with computers could someone let me know what im doing wrong?? it wont let me download from the game either keeps giving me error messages. any help would be great

It doesn't matter where you save the patch when you download it. All you have to do is, once downloaded, run it by double-clicking the icon. Then, you install it just like you would any other program (just follow the instructions). You cannot just download it and open the game, since you need to install it first.

hey i downloaded the game but when i hit play it says there is an error with the XML ,or something like that, and i hit ok then 1 million more just pop up in it's place, all kinda of different but all involving the XML. any help?
