FAQ's on Installation & Patches

because i dont know if it could work but i can move the game from the steam folder and put in the folder that beyond the sword would normaly be intalled

the problem is not the update (which you cannot turn off) but that BtS tries to install into the Civ4 directory and in order to find that (and the patch version of Civ4) it looks into the windows registry. The values in there as well as the exact installation paths differ between cd and digital versions and in case of Steam and Direct2Drive have so far as I know not been successfully reconciled. You could ask steam and the take2 tech support to help out - but especially with steam which uses a quite rigid digital rights management system I guess it will prove impossible

Edit: the path is \program files\firaxis games\sid meier's civilization 4\
but I'd be surprised if that would work...

I've just installed the 3.17 patch and am faced with a black screen upon launching. No menu, no nothing. Except that the taskbar at the bottom of the screen tells me that BtS is running.

I'll have a play around with it, but can anyone guess what the problem might be? I never had this before.

[Three hours later: Still nothing happening. Changing the screen resolution doesn't help, and in any case the unpatched version was working perfectly well with the original resolution. BtS starts up OK - I get the progress bar showing everything launching - but once the launch procedure is finished, I'm just presented with a black screen.

One other strange thing: although I definitely downloaded the 3.17 patch, when I click on 'Properties' on the application's icon, it shows as version 3.1.3.1!]

[Sorry, should have said my specs: Intel Mac Pro, 3GHz dual-core Xeon, 4GB RAM, ATI Radeon HD 3870, running Windows XP with SP2 via BootCamp. The Windows partition is completely separate from the Mac partition and is used solely for BtS. Video drivers are up to date. I'll run the DirectX Diagnostic information when I next boot up in Windows.]

Sorry, but I'm not sure of the etiquette here - should I move these posts to the Tech Support forum?

[EDIT: I think I will - they really belong there. Belated apologies for hijacking this thread.]

Can someone help me with the bts install on a vista 32bit system using civ 4 gold edition cd version? i get the " downloads available/failure to download abort install" message. i've tried downloading the 1.61 patch but it fails and says i do not have the correct version of civ 4. i've tried calling customer support but that goes no where, they act as if they've never heard of this issue before.
