Fastest Science Victory

Great, but we're talking here about games submitted to HOF in HOF rules (no reloads, mods, IGE, etc.)

Thank you. Ever since the monthly deity challenge #2, which Iron hosted, I have wanted to have a sub 200 Poland game :D.

The plan I had, was to take advantage of quick policies to get cost reduction for buildings and bonus to RA:s fast. I aimed for full Tradition and 3 policies in commerce before education at t92 and to have Rationalism and Big Ben finished before the completion of the 2:nd wave of RA:s and plastics at t158.

I also played much slower and careful than usual. I didn't do sloppy mistakes and got a good end game. I even finished with 1 GS to spare, cos I am still learning end game calculations and didn't trust myself enough ;).

I opened up with 2 scouts and a shrine. Bought 2 scouts after that while pumping out settlers every 8 turns. 4 city NC with one extra expand after that.

Notes of interest:
- Due to the 5th city not being able to finish university in time I hade to save oxford for endgame and hard build my way to Radio :S. Room for improvement.
- Luck beeing able to finish LtoP in late 130:s.
- Used Rationalism finisher on Industrialism (not the best use of a free tech but I had to finish Rationalism).
- Crappy religion. Last one. I built Borobodour but dont think it was worth it. In the end I bought only one GS and one GE for hubble.
- Policies were 6 Tradition. 3 Commerce. 6 Rationalism. 3 Freedom. 3 Patronage. 1 Aestethics. 4 Freedom.

I hope the write-up helps.

So did you actually manage to complete Trad and get 3 into commerce before entering Renaissance? If so that's very impressive. How many Cultural CS friends and allies did you have?

Had an Aztec Deity SV on 198. That's my best

Screw you guys (said in jest Moderators).....that's d@mn fast! My own best effort is Inca t224 (IIRC).

I did have an Egypt game that was off to a ridiculous GL start (stepped on a Writing ruin t12or so and had Salt and some trees to chop so went for it), but mid-game I had to defend my lands a bit from a very persistent Japan.

I've read discussions that most Wonders slow down "optimal" finishing times, but GL to Philosophy (and Oracle) makes for a very early GS and NC. Anyone care to do the math on that?

Its actually not hard. With Poland you have 2 extra policies when hitting education. Building Oracle give you +1. Finishing Tradition before t90 ain't hard by itself.

That said, I hade one culture ally and hit a early culture ruin.

Oh I know about Poland's UA, they're probably my most played Civ ;)

You didn't mention Oracle which threw me off, now it makes much more sense. I usually finish my Trad at around ~70 to ~80 with a Civ without culture bonuses.

Babinski's great game inspired me to play Poland/Deity/Great Plains as well, but with a different strategy.

I won on turn 195 with a Trad/Liberty mix and some Medieval-Renaissance warfare. Ended up with 2000 bpt and 8 cities, no RAs. I chose Shaka as one of my opponents, he was a great distraction for the other AIs. Too bad I never got the opportunity to liberate anyone from him or get a DoF with him.

Nice one! We just had a discussion in another thread about how to exploit war in "peaceful" games. Guess you just proved that point pretty well.

Did you finish Liberty or just free settler?

The most annoying thing about war in non-DomV games is city resistance time. You're basically gimping yourself with the 5% penalty for a zero yield city... Great Plains is really good for a crossbow push though, it's all flat terrain so AIs' units die very quickly. I'm tempted to try the same approach with Korea, they should have crazy science with 7+ cities.

I finished Liberty for an extra GS in the end. Had full Tradition and 5/6 in Liberty pre-Renaissance, left the happiness policy for later. That might've been a mistake, as I think I could've gone for 9 cities if I took it instead of Representation. Hard to say though, the extra production from the Golden Age was very useful at the time, plus cheaper policy costs meant slightly faster Rationalism etc.

Sweet Vadalaz! Really nice game. Nice to see different approaches work. Did you get many camp quests with archers in early game or did you build em later on? Can you post your timings of crucial techs aswell?

I got mail today that my game wasn't accepted to HoF due to a sessions below 30 minutes of gameplay. Unfortunate for me I hade to log, but I do understand that rules must aply.

Seeing a t195 win tho, makes me want to push that barrier too so here we go rerolling ;). I hope this is inspiring others to try sub 190.

I built the usual 2 or 3 archers early to protect civilian units and clear nearby camps. I only started building up an actual army after Education, bought a university in the capital and saved the rest of the money for upgrades and crucial CS allies. Ducal stables give so much gold on this map, especially during a golden age.

My game was slower than yours until the very end: T97 Education, T136 Sci Theory (bulb), T164 Plastics (Rati finisher). Wide empires shine in the post-Plastics game. :)

Yeah, ducal stables works great :D.

Your game reminds me of the gotm111 tommynt had with Babylon. He too had a slower teching just until the very end and he also conqured a few cities. Seen it?

Yeah, I skimmed through his videos some time ago. Perhaps Immortal is the better difficulty for warlike SV, given how easy it is to take cities from AIs. Deity cities have a better chance of having universities in them though. I only got one in my game, but the wonders I got were very good, ToA+Notre in Rio and Hanging Gardens in Amsterdam. :)

Overall I like self-founded wide play better than this, but it's tricky on Deity with the limited room you get and the diplo hit you take for expanding fast. I actually briefly had it in this game when I was on 4 cities as well, since AIs seemed really reluctant to get more than 2-3 cities. Must be map-related, even Shaka only had 3 self-founded cities.

Great game vadalaz!
First time I saw warfare in very fast science game on deity.

I thought I quit playing CiV (just reading forum from time to time), but maybe I will play one more game.
(I really think I'm better player now than 1,5 years ago when got my first sub 200t victory :))

A newly founded one (after NC) give you approx 0 beakers as well during the first 10 turns.

My issues when I´ve tried something similar like this (with worse results, so no expert), is that culture and happiness are big problems. With Poland, culture problems goes away.

How did you manage happiness? For sure you stayed + almost all the time to get such a fast finish. Those 4 cities must have added something like 50 unhappy when conquered.

My hunch is always to pick representation asap when I´m in the Liberty tree, since it pays more "interest" the earlier you get it. In this example, you would´ve had to delay it until the end to get the GS after you´re done with the natural ones. Still, maybe Poland gets enough SP anyway.

My religion had +2 happiness from temples, I had some mercantile and other CS allies, built circuses and colosseums, and the first city I captured had Notre Dame. Sent hammer trade routes to annexed cities for fast courthouses and libraries. I ran out of excess happiness by turn 145ish, which was also my ideology timing. Then Universal Suffrage kicked in and happiness was no longer an issue.

My latest submission just got accepted by HoF. A t193-SV with Poland on Great Plains, 4 turns faster than my previous attempt. Nice to finally have a sub200 game in HoF and I think I might have the fastest deity SV overall with this game.

Are you trying another SV game, but with Korea @valadaz? :)

Have you began to play again @IronFighterXXX?

Nicely done! :goodjob:

I tried a couple of maps with Arabia after the t195 game, but couldn't get a good enough start so I gave up on it. The idea was to conquer as much as possible with camels T110-150, and I think it does have potential. It's just that Arabia gets no early game bonuses, which probably makes them an overall worse choice than Poland, Babylon, Spain, Shoshone and perhaps even Huns or Russia. Same for Korea, they're insane in the late game but very bland early on.

Yes, rolling a good enough map is very tedious. It doesn't have to be legendary or anything but there has to be several good city spots. Often there are just 2-3 good ones. Maybe its not as crucial with your strategy?

Here's a pic of my map, 4 good, solid spots and even a good spot for the expansion with 2 unique luxuries. Best GP map I have rolled (and I have rolled lots...)
