Favorite Civ and why?

Vikings, the perfect squatter with good UP and location/spawn time. UHV is realistic and flexible.

Really? I never liked their UP. Maybe its because I prefer intact infrastructure when I capture something. I can see it being useful if you do want to pillage though.

When I go to war and intend to capture, I prefer leaving the infrastructure untouched. You have to improve the tiles again if you are to keep that land, after all. Perhaps with the Vikings it's so you want to keep everyone else behind in tech, which would have long lasting economical consequenses. :p

...plus, keep in mind-most UP's are designed for a civ's UHV. One of the Vikings' UHV conditions is to have 5000 gold in 1500 AD, so this UP could help a bunch if you just run through Europe with a horde of units and pillage everything:lol:

To keep this in-context; I earlier said Turkey was my favorite, and I still do, but close behind is Persia (because you can get such a HUGE empire) and Germany (same reason)

Indeed.

I only managed to succeed in my UHV with the Vikings on Emperor difficulty because I made use of their Unique Power quite a bit.

Interesting. Maybe it is required for emperor, but I found it more fun to spam a couple of great artists in Amsterdam for my gold. Then again, I was always a bit of a pacifist until I had tanks and bombers.

kbk, you mean Merchants right? I did Vikings UHV with couple of Merchants, pillaging is not mandatory (on Monarch), but helps give you a boost.

Merchants, yes, sorry.

My favorite has got to be Rome or Japan. For Rome you have quick empire-building then you have to fight to keep it when France, Spain, and England pop up. For Japan you can just sit there, colonization, research, and maybe rip a chunk out of China, whatever you have to do to get the highest score in 1500.

To be sure. To be clear though, I actually needed both the UP and Great Merchants to succeed on Emperor.

I haven't tried Vikings on emperor without pillaging, but that sounds like a challenge!

Definitevly China.
They start out first and are usualy the last ones standing.
My record is a empire spaning from the pacific to the atlantic.

There is just something about the ability to conquer your first city with a warior and the last one with modern armor...

I'd have to say France. If Rome collapses and you conquer Italy with your starting units, you have a strong position to become the tech leader (way better than England) with Rome as your production city and Paris as your commerce/science city and you can conquer Spain and Germany early. You can even nab Frankfurt. You've got Chicago and New Orleans in your historical area, so there's no instability with taking two of the four important cities in America (and you don't need Caracas, since you can kill Spain before Combustion) and the Americans won't even dislike you for it! You don't need to have any cities in Asia or South America to get luxury resources since the native civs won't be able to wait to hand them over thanks to your awesome UP. The Power of the Entente even makes up for having to put up with Musketeers and Salons as your UU/UB. Not to mention the awesome alt-historical feeling of France launching a blitzkrieg against Germany. :-)

I sincerely liked to play as Carthage and as Turkey. As Carthage you can have this wonderful feeling of invading Rome with your Mercenary Hordes and then tech your way up to build Caravels.

Turkey is really wonderful to be played as a Cosmopolitan Empire.

In general I appreciate that you can play both on Emperor and still win the UHV without reloading too often :)

I also enjoy playing as Russians but it is simply impossible to rebuild the USSR so that is pretty frustating as well.

I like the Dutch too: can go anywhere you like regardless of borders due to UP, super powerful UB late game, don't need early frigates to defend against pirates due to UU. And they spawn relatively early for the amount of bonus buildings and techs they get (same as the Portuguese with almost 20+ moves extra).

the germans
i still am really bad at handling stability with them, since i usually take on france only after getting to industrialism and too fast expansion is really really bad...i had it one time, but collapsed because the fool that i am i built two additional cities to stack out the boundaries of russia...just to make sure everything of russia is under my control. i was collapsing even though all i did from 1920-1936 was spawn golden ages...till i collapsed...that seriously pissed me off, having met all goals just to collapse 4 turns before its over.

the french
love (mostly) peacefully building up wonders, especially since its really easy...

the greek
its a bit tougher, what really pissed off the first time i played because i read someone founded taoism and i thought...dammit, someone got to philosophy first...just to realize a couple of games later they werent linked...
either way, its usually a rather interesting game with the greeks.

but next time i m gonna try personal uhvs...including placing the wonders in the actual cities or closest to them (there is really no space to found delphi for example) but artemis in ephesus...and maybe i ll add a tile which could represent rhodes to plant the colossus there...
take over babylon/persia and build an empire that borders to china...before i eventually collapse.

The Dutch.

It's such a FUN game, no matter how you play it. You can go for minimalist UHV win, you can found a Dutch Empire to match Britain's in real life thanks to generous stability, and you can even win by domination (if you are AnotherPacifist in particular).

You have a great unique everything and Amsterdam is a great site.

I don't do drugs; Rhye's is what has made me want to visit The Netherlands.
