I think the thing that bothered me the most was Cleric's and blunt weapons.
Or that druids had to be human. They were rules that were there because it was a 'fantasy tradition', meaning it was a rule in 1st edition to keep the game somewhat balanced. It was a pointless rule, but one couldn't get rid of the rules because the game balance was BASED on them. So my cleric who worshipped a god who used a longsword as his symbol was forbidden from using longswords... because the god, that caused multitudes of bloody deaths, didn't want me running with sharp objects?

I don't know if you played in tournaments or anything, but for me it was a small circle of friends who played D&D. With that in mind, we always felt comfortable in 'tweaking' the basic rules if we could all agree. One of my friends DID have a fighter/cleric who wielded edged weapons. For myself, I thought it silly that I couldn't be an elven ranger or that demi-human characters has level maximums in some areas. Again, we all felt comfortable about changing that as well.

Perhaps if I get Neverwinter Nights and experience the pure version of 3e, then I'll change my mind.

Sorry to have wavered from the topic at hand.

"Hey, you want an orc paladin? Sure, go ahead if it turns you on." Oh, but it all comes down to enjoyment...What is so enjoyable about Monty Haul all the time?
An orc paladin wouldn't have to play in a maunty haul campaign, that is up to the DM, not the gaming system.
And in 3rd edition, an 5th level Orc Paladin is balanced with a 5th level gnome cleric. Scary, ain't it?

Those are all changes that 3rd edition has made, while keeping the game balanced. That is why I prefer it.

I played with a fairly large circle of friends, but they were mostly about a decade older than me, and had been playing as purists since I was in grade school. Change wasn't an acceptable option.
