No love for the Europe map!? It is one of my favorites.
STD all around...add a few more civs...reduce the amount of CS equal to the number of Civs you add. Civ placements are always pretty good because the map has it all.
 
I'm honestly not sure. But I think what happens is that the AI has a bit more of a choice than it does in a normal start. The ancient tech bonuses are hard-coded, but I think the advanced start bonus is a more generic lump sum that they spend according to their personalities.

That makes sense. Too bad there's no way of seeing what techs the AI has.

Removing a city state for each civ you add is a good idea. And I like playing on Earth sometimes, but I'm not a fan of maps that don't wrap around (like Europe). :c
 
Tilted Axis + Raging Barbarians.

The Northern hemisphere gives room for the barbarians to continue spawning resulting in more fun that lasts longer. :)
