Yes, the collateral damage is what makes them truly deadly. Want to reduce an entire enemy attacking force to nothing? That impressive stack defending the city you want seem too tough? Toss a couple Cho-Ko-Nu at it and watch them wither away. I bring one catapult to reduce the city defenses and then just collateral damage the stack down to a big pile of red-lined wounded. Then you can mop up the remaining units and score a bunch of experience points for all your other units that may have otherwise been lost in battle.
