Favourite civ

They already have a poll for this. I think France was the most popular

Couldnt find poll, used search, found this.

Mine is Japanese.
With Barracks+Armory and building something like 40 samurai with Shock III - and they all fight at full strength and produce great generals much easier. And let's not forget, when they upgrade, they still keep those bonuses!!!

I just won a king dom victory, I can honestly say I'm looking to start a new game on emperor and am finding it difficult to not play as japan again! I'm going through the wiki of all the civs and saying, "Nope, that doesnt beat japan" constantly!

The next best civ looks like Russia to me.

France + Liberty tree for me.
+2 culture/city up to steam power is pretty sweet (covers the majority of the game) and of course the foreign legion is nothing to sneeze at, especially because it never goes obsolete.
IMHO France is great for building and maintaining a wide empire up to the renaissance (when their first UU comes into play) and then rapidly expand with some late game wars.

40 samurai? Is that a huge map you're playing or what? Most attacking troops I might have at one time are 10 max. I imagine your turns must take forever shifting those troops around, especially with a slow moving unit like the samurai.

I think Aztecs are the most powerful but my favourite is Russia. Aztecs make the game far too easy and kind of force you into a niche strategy early on which can become tedious, altho they do have flexibility for which victory type you pursue later. Russia on the other hand is more versatile with some solid strengths but nothing overpowered in any direction or for any one strategy, which means lots of ability for doing different things in each game. I also seem to be in the minority in loving the cossack.

40 samurai?

Seriously: the more you build, the better off you are. You want maximum units starting with shock III because when they level up you can choose attack twice. Having huge amounts of mech infantry which attack twice is AWESOME.

In the early stages when going warrior to longsword and levelling up in battle, always choose the rough terrain upgrade because shock 1 will not stack as shock 2 when you upgrade swords to samurai :)

Point is how are you building 40 samurai. But yeah Bushido is just insane even if your VC relies on defensive.

I can't think of a situation in which I'd need 40 samurai. Unless I wanted to build all the samurai to last me the rest of the game, upgrading to mech inf. Tho even then it seems like too many. Considering only so many troops can engage at once and you only need to cycle so many troops to optimize healing to always have fresh units in the front ranks, having extra sitting around is only useful to replace losses.. tho with the ai as bad as it is, losses should be extremely minimal. So it seems like you're paying a load of unit maintenance and wasted production time in building them that could be spent elsewhere to better purpose, all in order to gain a great general promotion and open terrain combat bonus on a unit?

Probably Korea or Babylon. But that's from a coolness view, not a gameplay view. I think that the best are Spain, Japan, and Rome, as far as power is concerned, although it really depends on what you are trying to accomplish.

I like Korea, nice colours. Leader looks like an amicable guy. Electric lights in the leader scene are lame.
Korea's special ability is excellent. Units not overwhelming, but I like the package.

My favorites are Aztec and Spain. Normally I play quite peacefully, but those two encourage war, and I always have fun with those.

Try out Mongolia, you will love the Khan and Khesiks.

My 3 fave, in order:

Inca - I am not predisposed to like the Inca (whereas I tend to like African and SE Asian civs) but I like pretty much everything about this Civ from the colors, to the Slinger UU, the terrace farm, but especially their ability. I love planning my new cities around mountains to take advatage of the terraces and they roads-over-mountains.

Spain - My first draw was their colors and icon, but once I discovered their special ability, they instantly become a favorite for me. Suprising to me because in previous versions of Civ, they were always a least fave of mine. I really enjoy exploring, and I'm amply rewarded by the Spanish UA for my efforts.

Babylon - Another Civ I was never keen on in previous Civs, but I like the UA and UB, as well as the colors.

Civs I want to like but am on the fence about:
Polynesia - In theory I was set to love this Civ, since I love Polynesian culture, but when I play on a Continents Plus map, I always am started on a continent. If I could just start near chains of islands without having to switch to Archip., I would love this civ.

Iroquois - Loved this Civ unt I got Inca, and the Inca UA trumped the Iroq UA in my book. I still like them though.

CIV I HATE:
Persia: I hate the McDonalds colors, I hate having him as a neighbor, I dislike the artwork of the leader, I don't like the city names, I don't like the UU...I just hate this Civ. I wish I could delete it and get some Steam credit towards Korea.

CIV I WANT:
Inuit: I may not play Polynesia all that much, but I LOVE having them in the game. I know Inuit is a stretch, but it would just be so cool to have a snow/tundra specialist civ.

CIV I WANT that's REALISTIC:
ISRAEL. Also, I miss the Khmer (probably my all time favorite), the Ethiopians, and would love the Magyar/Hungarians or Austro-Hungarians.

Japan or France tie as my favourite Civ's - Japan's Samurai and Bushido combo makes then a domination powerhouse and France's culture boost in the early game combined with good gunpowder units in the mid-late game means they are almost never weak.

Persia a very close second - For the science, superior defensive traits and the ability to rifle rush from very specialized bowman.

Ottomans are least favourite - Just never seem to be able to figure out how to play them. Plus thier UU + UA combination seems very weak.

England are by far the most disappointing - Having ships that can zip around in the ocean pales to insignificance in all but the most specialized of situations. Ruling the sea's is one thing, but having an ocean load of ships with no purpose is a burden more often that not.

My favorites civs:
Spain - I've never enjoyed playing the spanish in Civ until this one. Tercios, Conquistadors, and the UA are so much fun, even if they're not as powerful as some. If they made LS upgrade to muskets though, I could see Spain becoming an uberciv.

Polynesia - I love settling islands all by myself (makes defense a little easier, not to mention it's nice knowing you own ALL of that landmass), and they let me get out and do it as early as I like.

Korea - Great UA, and while the units aren't the best, Turtle Ships and Hwacha have amazed me ever since I played the expansion to Age of Empires 2.

Civs I wish I could like, but just can't get through a game with:
England - I have ALWAYS been a fan of England in civ. But naval power is so useless...

Russia - I just have really crappy luck whenever I play them, so I never do.

Ottomans are least favourite - Just never seem to be able to figure out how to play them. Plus thier UU + UA combination seems very weak.

Yeah, but not when you are playing at as a heavy coastal civ.... surround the encampment with warriors and collect ships.... your enemies have to be heavy coast based as well but most of the times they will have major cities along that.
