Modern, because of one word. nukes. i must have nukes. my only prob with having nukes is the war i will start very soon.
:nuke: :nuke: :nuke: bye bye celts.
:nuke: :nuke: :nuke: bye bye zulu.
:nuke: :nuke: :nuke: bye bye carthage (oh wait thats me :crazyeye: )

PS ive never actually used nukes on my cities, just nearly

Modern. Science insanely fast, cash flowing in from tech sales (+1137 per turn, at one point, at 3.7.0, no less!), keeping in the flow of global politics, playing other powers against each other (sell him Computers, sell him Synthetic Fibers, sell him Robotics, sell him Rocketry), the rush of being the global leader in military technology sales (we don't build the Modern Armor, but you wouldn't have them if I didn't sell you SynthFibers) the excitement of a close Space Race with the threat of a Babylonian invasion ever-looming...I love it!

Industrial.
Artillery, infantry, bombers, fighters, destroyers, helicopters, battleships, marines, transports ,carriers, tanks and of course SUBMARINES!

Ancient. You're literally setting the course of history. There's also the most left to do - there's a vast unknown, lots of land left to settle, many structures, units, and wonders yet to be built, many techs to discover. It also goes the fastest(in later ages, I often feel like advancement has craweled to a standstill).

I'm surprised Modern is so unpopular. I guess by the time Modern age comes around most games are already almost over.

That's exactly why I always choose huge map to play on. The only game I played on tiny map was in my civ2 age. I won the game with archers that time. After that, I never played any small size game again. Huge map + Deity level, this assures me a long game.

Yeah I do the same, Huge map is a must for me. Anything less just isn't fun... although I'm happy with Regent for now. Gonna try all random max number of opponents next game, I picked a few less this time round to give me some early breathing room :)

Medival to me. That's when I usually start catching up and kicking butt (Knights, Fool! Knights!). And it happens to have what have become my favorite wonders: Adam Smith's Trading Company, and Knights Templar (Sun Tzu's Art of War is a nice one too). Plus the music is my favorite.

I have to say I kinda don't like industrial era, for two reasons:

A) man, I put all that time in working all those land tiles, and then merging my workers back into cities to beef up production... and now I gotta spawn them all over again and work each of those tiles AGAIN to slap railroads on 'em all now? Such a chore... if it weren't for Replacable Parts doubling worker efficiency, I'd probably never feel like finishing the railroad phase. I still kinda don't, even with that.

and

B) I just don't dig the music for industrial age. I also happen to REALLY like the medival age music, so it's a double whammy of going from my most favorite to my least favorite music.

i love the industial age. aircraft bombardment, huge armys of modern armour, and my favorite world nuclear wars!

My favorite times are the mid-to-late Middle Ages and the late Industrial Age. Overall, I like the Middle Ages better, but I like them all.

Ancient Age - I love exploring, setting off into the unknown, discovering things, tracing my growth. Also, Ancient Age warfare is hella fun, even if it does constrict your growth somewhat. Ancient Age music is also my favorite. It makes me feel like I'm really exploring the world. My least favorite part is trying to figure out exactly where to settle and connecting everything with roads and such.

Middle Ages - Towards the beginning of the Middle Ages, I'm usually a tiny, fledgling society that's losing money rapidly and struggling to keep the empire in line. However, it's not long before I begin to emerge from the dust with knights and musketmen. I finally get over my woes with awesome wonders (such as Adam Smith's Trading Company) and with improvements such as universities and banks, and by the end I'm dominating the world as I begin to introduce cavalry into my army...the music is also very good, but when I play it seems to repeat the same song over and over and over again. What I don't like about the Middle Ages is that before all of those great improvements I'm usually struggling, even if I am dominating my neighbors through military force. Towards the end of the Middle Ages, your workers also tend to just lay around with nothing to do.

Industrial Age - The Industrail Age is tedious in the beginning, when all my workers have to start up again and build railroads, and the music changes to soft, melodic Industrial Age piano tunes (which I am not a big fan of at all). With riflemen and infantry, combat breaks down into defensive wars, which are my least favorite kind. However, you also begin to discover the entire world, forge alliances with civilizations, and watch grand civilizations crumble into dust under the combined might of the rest of the world. The world becomes completely known to you, and you can keep track of every event that goes on in the world. Epic AI wars are commonplace, and are very fun to track. Towards the end of the age, tanks, bombers, battleships, carriers, marines, and all that good stuff comes into play and war becomes much more interesting. Interesting knew advances, wonders, and improvements are introduced as well. By the end of the age you're on your way to conquest again.

Modern Age - The music once again changes to great stuff, the catchy, upbeat techno tunes which makes it feel like you're advances and that quickens the pace considerably. Warfare is completely epic, with modern armor, motorized infantry, carriers, and bombers dominating the map. However, managing your empire can become a real pain, as production in your core cities reaches the point where producing military units and improvements are a waste of shields. Wonders are mostly useless and no one can be trusted (which is fun and not fun in an odd if totally sensible way). The pace picks up considerably and, eventually, you don't have to worry about building improvements or railroads anymore (for the most part). And, of course, there's nukes. :nuke: :nuke: :nuke: You can't forget good 'ol reliable nuclear warheads.

Overall the mid/late Middle Ages and Late Industrial Age are my favorite times, and the early/mid Industrial Age is my least favorite time. The Ancient Age is very close to my favorites, with the Modern Age not far behind.

medieval, definitly. With my warmonging by the middle ages I usually have taken most of the world but taking the rest with the better midieval units is so fun. Modern is good too but I just never seem to get to it before I win. (Last time I saw modern age was about 3 months ago)
