The fear/respect system is one of the few things I liked about Civ:BE. Do you all know if any similar kind of system is in Civ 6 (it seems doubtful), and if not, should it be?

I can't remember seeing such a thing. I liked it (as i liked the whole diplomatic stuff in BE:RT)

I have not seen anything resembling the fear/respect system in any of the gameplay videos, so I think it is safe to say that no, it will not be in civ6. I am ok with it not being in civ6. It was a cool feature in BE, but it was too easy to manipulate.

The closest thing would be the agendas which give the AI unique reasons to like or hate you, but without the tiered relationship system.

Yeah, Fear/Respect played out horribly. Diplomacy that didn't have anything to do with Diplomacy but instead just on how good you were doing.

Fundamentally, the Fear/Respect system in CivBE:RT was not that novel of an idea. If you think about it, Fear was just a measure of your military strength. In past Civ games you just looked that up in the Demographics screen (which CivBE lacked).

Respect was the accumulated sum of diplomatic bonuses and penalties based on your actions and the other civ's "agenda." At its core, this was a less clear and sillier version of the explicit bonuses and penalties you found in the Civ IV diplomacy screen.

At any rate, it's doubtful we'll see the CivBE:RT Fear/Respect system copied and pasted into Civ 6. Of course, military might will probably be handled as it has always been in the Civilization series. Civ 6 will also sport agendas which means leaders will have unique personalities that affect their behaviour and game-play. But these agendas will be pretty static so if you're looking to game the diplomacy system like you could in CivBE:RT, you're not going to find that in Civ 6.

Let's be realistic here, the way Agendas work in Civ6 means the AI is always going to hate you the more you are winning. Diplomacy in Civ6 is being marketed as some great new system when really it just means the AI will always hate you.

I feel like we will never return to Civ4 levels of diplomacy, where it meant something to make friends.

Eh, some AIs hate you for doing good things (like the Aztecs, China, and Brazil), but not all of them. A player in a winning position could conceivably be friendly with Egypt, Japan, Scythia, and America.

Also, several of the hidden agendas that have shown up in videos have been things like, "the AI likes you for having good tech", or "the AI likes you for having lots of population". I think it's too early to judge.

Any evidence of this?

That si completely false unless there is an agenda that directly has "Has completed more victory gals than me"

Even on paper there's no indication that they will always hate you, quite frankly its' YEA/NAY situation

Do you have 1 city on Victoria's continent? She likes you.

Do you have a strong military? Cleo likes you.

Have you built more wonders? Qin hates you.

Have you got a strong military and strong culture? Hojo likes you.

Most agendas actually have no bearing, if someone is doing well scientifically, culturally, and man-wise, then they could technically be called winning and still have AIs praise them.

Not every agenda is geared towards something that the player will end up doing anway, especially with all these several factors (for example, you can't be huge wonder-hoarder anymore, therefore you're less likely to upset Qin)
