I'm a female Civ/Civ2 player, too, albeit not a very active one. I don't know why more girls don't play. I doubt anyone I know even knows what Civ is.

Welcome! I'm one of the Lovely Ladies Of Civ who inhabit this neat little corner of cyberspace.

I also sometimes wonder why more women don't play Civ, or strategy games in general. I am the only civver in my circle of friends, both male and female. I really don't think it has anything to do with our gender. I think, rather, that it has more to do with one's personality. I know, from my own skills, and from the posts, that women, on average, play about as well as the guys. I play at deity, but it took a long time for me to get there. I might last in a MP game, who knows?

I think that some women mistake Civ for a shoot-em-up war game, though, I'm positive that there are some lady civvers who are even more bloodthirsty than the men!

It would be interesting to know how the women on this board got introduced to Civ.

Newbie to these boards, but was on the Civ2 NG a couple of years ago. I'm also a Civ girlie!

I play Civ (mainly TOT at the moment because of problems getting Civ2 to run on this PC) - and it's the now ex-boyfriend's fault. He put a copy of Civ 1 onto my PC, showed me what to do - and had to prise my hands off the keyboard 3 hours later!

Bought Civ2 and never looked back (still useless at it though).

Agreed. I think it's a personality thing. I know that when Quake II arena matching was hot, there were several female clans - the Crack Whores comes to mind - who were about as vicious and bloodthirsty as it gets. Underestimating an opponent based exclusively on gender would be a potentially fatal mistake, in Civ or any game...

My wife is extremely competitive, but just doesn't have the patience to sit down and learn a complex strategy game like Civ. My sister-in-law loves playing Doom, though...

My wife's opinion on the game is "I hate that f*****g game!!" Thank God she attends night class!! I wish she'd have the patience to learn how to play, but she is one of those people hates to lose so she won't try.

I'm gonna try with Civ3 though.

I have been logging on as guest for months now reading the posts but never wanted to post till now. I had to include myself as one of the ladies.

I have been playing for around a decade??? (started when Civ 1 came out. I love the game (unfortunattly terribly addicted to it)and I play it with my brothers and my other male friends. I don't have any other female friends who play. I also have tried many other computer games but I find most are made for males and they don't interest me so all I play is Civ and the windows solitaire games.

I notice that I play differently than most guys. I hate going to war. I do whatever I can to avoid it and win the game peacefully.
(I am worried that civ3 will force me to fight more). I do pretty well with my stategy and can win on diety level on a medium sized map. Does anyone else have a peaceloving strategy and if so are they female?

Welcome to CivFanatics Medgen!

Many of us play using a (somewhat) peaceful strategy. I, for one, used the isolationist method for the bulk of my Civ career. Once I got my little piece of heaven settled, I would just hold the fort and my only combat was in defense.

Games where I want to really jump the score up I attack everybody until I have the AI down to one city then build up the world around them.

And, no, I am not a female.

dreadhead7,
I was intoduced to civ from my brother and his friends. That was years ago (civ 1) and most of us now still play (civ II).

Hi Medgen, and welcome! I, too, was introduced to Civ by my brothers, and I quickly became addicted! It got so that I would hear the Civ theme in my sleep, and wake up to find one of my brothers playing. I'd always watch them, and soon, they began explaining things to me. Then, joy of joys--Jim and Erik let me play, and I haven't looked back since!

I pay homage to you, my dear big brothers, for introducing me to the best game of all time!

Strange, though, I actually bought my twin sister a copy of Civ2, hoping to get her into it, but aggghh, she wouldn't bite.

Spy, you're a lady??? Whoohoo!! All of us Lovely Ladies Of Civ are coming out!

Medgen, I, too, play a peaceful strategy. I call myself the Peacemonger from Hades.
smile.gif
I have been known to complete a full game without firing a shot, except killing some barbarians. I'm the same way in SMAC. I don't think that things will be much different in Civ3--I'll find a way to be peaceful.

Medgen .- even though I'm quite sure I'm a guy I must admit that I might play like a girl....

I too hate to go to war - which is why I always bribe my way through all the AI cities. Just because I don't like to go to war doesn't mean that I'll let the AI annoy me and my Civ, so they will just get a pot of gold and join me in my glorious quest for the perfect Civ!!!!!

Two things:
1) I am also the most pacific player in the world... Well I must recognize that I like to buy enemy cities, but never go to war. So...
2) I welcome all the Ladies that are posting and I am happy that any of them decided to show up as new members too. In any case, I already forget (I didn't even pay attention) the names... So, posting as usual, man or woman

Have fun!

Oh for a wife that was even ambivalent about Civ. My wife has made it very clear that Civilization (specifically, as opposed to computer games in general) is her #1 turn-OFF (you know what I mean ) She considers it her "competition."

I made a deal with her that I wouldn't play Civ2 ever again after I finish this month's game of the month. When Civ3 comes out though, she can expect to see a lot less of me. (When was that Mac version coming out again? )

I suggested that when Civ3 comes out I could teach her how to play and that we could play hotseat games and later multiplayer games. Her response was not very encouraging.

On the plus side, I have a 10-year old daughter who LOVES to play Civ. My prodigy!

Good to hear that I'm not the only one with a wife that rolls her eyes when seeing Civ on the monitor.
And thanks for the tips on playing when she's sleeping - once I was playing until about 3 in the morning when one of the kids woke her up and I was caught! Not much sympathy there when beeing deadly tired the day after.
Speaking of kids - do any of you guys (and of course girls) have kids (I've got three of them, the oldest beeing 4 years old)? And if you have, how do you find time for playing Civ?

GoldenLion,

I have three girls, 10, 8 and 6 years old. Civ times in our house are defined as:

Rainy Saturdays (when the kids are playing nicely)
Evenings when the kids are in bed and my wife is on the phone with her mom.
rolleyes.gif

Evenings when the kids are in bed and I'm already in the doghouse (very dangerous)
Evenings when the kids are in bed and I can't sleep. (BTW playing Civ does not help one get to sleep
wink.gif
)
Best of all - when the girls all go shopping!

Master of Ceremonies

Lucky you, three girls must be a thrill (my kids are two boys and one girl.
Hopefully the boys will be playing Civ (3?)when they become a couple of 4-5 years older - and I'll certainly do my best to persuade my wife to let the girl play as well if she wants to!

Loved your comment on playing when your wife's on the phone with her mom. I think I'll try it out too - their phonecalls last for at least half an our up to maybe one, so here's a perfect opportunity to play a couple of turns.
