Hi All,
I am new to the board.
I play Civ III basic
Does anyone know why my fighters will not defend my cities regardless of the mode they are in?
I would also appreciate a little tutoring on where to save patches so they will operate.
Thanks,
Lt Col USAF (Ret)

Welcome! You need to put the fighters into Air Superiority mode. Then there's a chance they'll shoot down enemy bombers.

Also, I've split off your post and created it's own thread...

Just in case you mean this: Fighters won't defend against any enemy ground forces anyway! They only defend against enemy airforce, as Turner mentioned.

Air Superiority is frustratingly random, sometimes it just won't happen. At some point, you end up building Flak/Mobile SAMs and watching them not work very well either. The only air defense that even comes close to working well is SAM Batteries, which require Aluminum. Best air defense of all is a Tank/Modern Armor army or 3 burning the city the Bombers are based in. Works every time.

One thing I wish to point out: Air Superiority was broken in the original implementation. I forget which patch fixed it. If you are fully patched to v1.29f, then Air Superiority will work as designed.

As for the patches, simply download 1.29f, and run it. It will install itself where it belongs.

btw, in PTW, if you dont have a patch (yeah i think it was PTW), when a jet fighter intersepts stealth bomber, the game will always crash, by giving some mysterios error. I tested it :)

Interestingly, I had a game crash just a bit ago when an enemy bomber was intercepted by my F-15. Lately my game has been acting really goofy... it doesn't animate the bombs coming out of the striking aircraft on a sub-regular basis. This is just the latest issue that has cropped up. Also, I've never had good luck with SAMs. They like to crash the game too :dunno:

Reinstall. Move your saves to a safe area on your Hard drive, or better yet a flash drive first.

not so simple.

I'm running a no-cd "patch" and I don't have the cd anymore (old roommate disappeared with it ).

Its not a major issue. If it becomes one, well... guess I'll just have to win all my games before the enemy gets bombers, or just not get into conflicts much past flight :p

might be a good xmas present to myself :D

Although I'm starting to get into Civ4 more now... I might end up with BtS and then ya'll will probably lose me forever :p

the real-life use of fighters is to defend against enemy bombers and attack enemy fighters.. Over their own land they defend their forces by flying up and attacking any enemy fighters or bombers in the sky. They are also used to fly over enemy territory and shoot down any defending enemy fighters. civ3 does not demonstrate this ability, as the defense (which is needed to defend against attacking fighters) is much lower than the attack. thats why, whenever i make a mod, the fighters have equal attack and defense.

thread:
Use more fighters in your city to have a good % of intercept chance

Hi All,
I have just (2 days ago) loaded Patch 1.29f to Vanilla Civ III.:)
I am playing Warlord and in a long term war with everyone (3 AI civs)
The patch fixed the Air Superiority fault BUT
I have now started getting an immediate crash when I click on a unit.
Game just quits. The screen goes black and I am back on my desktop.
Does anyone know what is going on???
Congrats to Padma, Turner and the others on their promotions:goodjob:

Are you playing the same game that you were playing before the patch? As I recall, 1.17 or 1.21 broke previous saves with some kind of upgrade. I don't remember the exact details, just that there was some incompatibility between the different saves. I'm sure it's buried somewhere in the patch readme.txt.

(Thanks!)

Yes.
I am playing the same game.
I also remember reading about changing the names of the saved games.
Yesterday morning (Jan 4) I uninstalled the game then the patch.
I ran CCleaner on the Register and reloaded game.
I am still getting the crashes almost every time I command a unit to do a task.
