Fighting sea monsters 1 - Megalodon

Well, I do have to say that pistol is a very poorly defined term in general, across different parts of the world...if it's a handgun, not a rifle or clearly something else larger, then it could fall under the broad category of pistols.

So you are out in the middle of the ocean in a small boat(10ft by 8 ft). Its a calm day but all of a sudden you sea a giant shark out heading right towards you. You identify it as the ancient mega-shark Megladon. The shark is about 20 seconds from your boat and it is hungry.

You have a pistol and your girlfriend is sitting next to you.

What do you do?

Let me tell you something that fish moves so fast you would not have time to react. And no pistol would save you.

Yeah, I'll have to agree. If you see it, it's not 20 seconds from you, it's less than 5, and you're dead.

You can call it a pistol by virtue of it being usable in one hand, but that's disingenuous. That caliber was designed to kill elephants. It loses any instructive purpose to say "this is a pistol that can stop an elephant" because we're not talking about any normal pistol caliber. What that is saying is "an elephant gun caliber can stop elephants."

With a 9mm, I'm liking the grizzly's odds, especially considering the fact that encounters are usually surprises at short distance, and that you have seconds before they close on you.

but the op didnt say what caliber pistol we had

Well, just forget the pistol then, as I have a backup plan, the +6 vorpal battleaxe I acquired through victory in this thread.

yea!! and our girlfriend is Lara Croft
Oh, and better yet, I happen to have a stash of bitten-off fingers from various Republicans over the years. I spread out a trail of the fingers in the water which the shark munches on, and, having developed a taste for conservatives, becomes my staunch ally. The 2016 convention in San Diego will see chaos on an unprecedented level.

I would try not to look like a whale, sirenian, dolphin, porpoise, pinniped, or giant sea turtle, and also try not to anger it. with a gun that likely couldn't cause serous harm.

Actually because of its size, Megalodons can only go at bout 15 miles an hour max. However it is 50 ft in length and weight 50 tons with a mouth that can just about swallow your boat.

With 20 seconds, you don't have time to turn on the motor and run away.

Actually I believe there speed was a little more than that, but even if not, yes I do believe you would end up like Jonah.

Where did you get 15mph? It wouldn't catch anything at that rate. Everything I've read about it said it was scary fast.
