I've been playing civ4 for around 2 yrs now and recently got back to it, somehow i've been stuck at noble as the jump to prince seem too much for me.
The map i usually choose and like most is Earth (pangea) , huge with 12 races.
Thanks to tips from some veterans here, I was finally able to record a domination victory on 1913 AD, which is very hard for me usually considering the size of that map. I wonder what is the normal yr to win ? My previous 2 wins on prince mode took till 2005 and was only a space victory.
I know I'm still a newbie but ,
Here how things went for me, and hope the noble players can make the jump as well
I do agree you'll need to get agressive right from the start, so that means little or no world wonders, you can start building them towards the end of the game i guess.
Settled down on first turn regardless, and went for the worker/warrior/settler built. rush to pottery and bronze working, then start chopping forests to rush a couple of settlers and while doing so build lots of cottages, 1-2 farms will do, cottages you'll need more to expand. Bronze working enables u to identify the copper as well you can get it fast.
By the time you have 4-5 towns, you'll be identifying your first opponent to take down, preferably someone at the corner, so you won't be worried about war declaration from all side if you happened to start in the center of the map, which i think is the worst possible scenario!!!
The situation where you get a lot of war declared on you at all corners usually comes when you're attacking one side while you're not fortifying the other which was a mistake forgivable at noble, but not at prince.
First battle, train a nice army before declaring war, and while doing so, make sure your other borders are well fortified as well !! I would say 4-5 of every kind of troops would be nice and you'll be able to take any town you're sieging usually. Try to keep a stack of troops together instead of seperately them, especially catapult units, leaving them alone is as good as gone if your enemy is just beside.
So basically no time for wonders again. Actually you should be able to build some.
If needed, lower research to 0-10% for troops upgrades when needed.
Basically the policy would be to wack anyone who's obviously going to declare war against you first. Plan your golden age properly , i love rushing to calender and build the museum so you have 12 turns golden age instead of 8
then universal sufferage when you have enough towns, so you can rush some nice wonders during the industrial age though.
So far this tactic worked well for me,i hope it does for you also
