Greetings all! Long time Civ player, first time poster!

This might seem a bit forward, but I recently wrote a book, and would like to hear some opinions of the first chapter - to give you a brisk run down...

THE LOST BRIGADE
Vic De Mharburg has lost his entire family in one brief and terrible second.
His sister Gillian has been murdered... and his brother Richard is responsible.
Vic wants answers, and he wants revenge. But by following Richard, Vic reaches one terrible and final conclusion – that there is still one more murder Richard intends to commit...
Set against the background of a world similar and yet different to our own, THE LOST BRIGADE is a dramatic tale of the nature of good and evil, life and what comes after. Richard De Mharburg is not merely a murderer – he is the architect of a glorious resurrection, the stage manager of a long prophesised, long feared return. He is the direct descendant of a man deliberately deleted from history, a man known in his time by many names, but most simply as Eustace the Evil. And Eustace the Evil has long been planning his triumphant reappearance. At his beck and call stand a gang of long dead killers, misfits, traitors and fiends known only as the Lost Brigade. They swore, centuries ago, to return at their master’s call, and to remake the world as he sees fit.
But Richard and Eustace have reckoned without one thing. Just like their ancestor, Vic and Gillian have found a way to exist beyond death. And they’ve found a whole host of allies determined to put a stop to their brother’s plans.
Will they succeed? Or will Richard stand by and watch the creation of a new age, a second Eustacian Terror... the dark and final victory of the Lost Brigade?

If anyone would like to have a look the first chapter is available here...

Prepare for heavy doses of snark. CFC OT just works that way.

Just the way we like it. ;)

This is a subscription post--could you tell us a little more about the setting? Is it based on a particular war or other historical setting?

Haven't read it all, but is this a kind of China Mieville type novel?

Believe me, snark is to some extent expected :D

It's kinda China Mieville - ish, in that I may have read about ten pages of China Mieville at some point in my life, and it's about the closest thing I've ever found to what I write. Thanks for starting to read, all comments/ snark recieved with interest and some trepidation...

As to the setting, it's a fantasy world, though steam punk is perhaps a better description. A combination between Victorian and Modern. However, history IS a big influence with me, and revolutions are what I'm particularly interested in, so expect a lot of that. I'd say it's influenced by many different eras and many different countries...

Also much mnetion that I finally won two straight multiplayer games of Civ IV on saturday as Frederick, which is highly unusual for me - I just wanted to tell someone and reckone dthis was about the only place anyone would care :D

Self published, yes, altho I'm considering a second edition... and whatever comments are given will be taken into consideration going foward, in my other work.

Who did you self publish it though? Lulu?

I did consider going through Lulu - someone who'd used it before recommended it - but I eventually went for KDP and CreateSpace. Purely as a way to get my stuff out tehre as soon as possible, not expecting huge returns immediately... and boy was I right! :D
