Last night I managed my first ever conquest voctory and was graced with the noble likeness of Henry VIII. Hmmm, not as good as I hoped, but what the hell, its a start.

I have been playing Civ 4 Warlords for a bout a month now and last night's win was on Noble. I have had a couple of space race victories on Noble and one or two Diplomacy victories on Warlords level.

In my conquest victory, I took out the japanes early in the game while Gandhi was having a few scraps with the Chinese. When I got cats, I started taking out the Mongolians but this was slow going. He put up a lot or resistance. All the while Gandhi was growing in strength and teching like mad. Eventually, Mongolia had one city left and I left them alone.

By now, I was leading in score and Gandhi had decimated most of China and was as big as me in land area but nearly twice as many people. He was leading in science and religeous techs by a mile. It was mid 20th century by then.

Then it was time for decisions. At first I thought that its going to lead into another space race and I think I still had a resonable chance of sucess. But then I looked into some of Gandhi's cities and noticed quite a lot but also quite outdated military (I took over a religion and Shrine from Mongolia). I decided that Gandhi, not being a warmonger, and us having very good relations, would probably concentrate on science techs and go for a space race victory and I thought that If I immediately switch to military techs and beeline Industrialism, I could build up an overwhelming army before he even gets started with his ship. And that is exactly how it panned out. I rolled into his country with tanks, artillery and infantry by the end of the 20th century and met mostly cavalry on the way.

Make no mistake, Gandhi quickly switched to military teching and very soon had infantry and a few tanks as well, but it was too late. I razed his cities one by one and he got weaker and weaker. His vassal, China, took a couple of stabs at me but they were also very weak. By the way, I realised for the first time how strong infantry is against tanks and artillery - never again will I leave my tanks etc un- or under-protected.

So last night's game showed that I can do it but I am sure I did it the hard way. from what I have seen, people regularly win conquest vicories in the 1800's but I sure as hell dont know how to do that! Streamlining teching and city management, I suppose.

Anyway, off to Singapore for a mini break :)

I'm not really sure what this is doing in the Strategies and Tips Forum :dubious: but congratulations on your win - and enjoy Singapore. :)

I tend to hit Domination well before Conquest, and it's often a case of avoiding 'tripping' Domination if I am wanting Conquest, but you're right in that it's about focus - when you've got a solid critical mass of 'say' 40% - 50% of the world's landmass, just pump out units, tech' towards military advances, and be prepared to raze cities and whip & draft your population 'to all heck'.

The warmongers out there I'm sure will be happy to chip in some advice ... ;)

Thanks for the advice, Cam. My main problem with this is when early on in the game I take over cities, I run into cash troubles very, very quickly if I keep them. Them my teching is shot to hell and my game grinds to a crawl and ultimate defeat.

So, should I raze cities early on when I already have 5 or 6 founded or conquered cities and just keep on razing as I go on until my econimy has stabilized? I have seen the AI simply build a new city immediately if I raze a small, outer city, with minimal loss. I am finding it hard to find that balance.

This is what divides Civ4 from previous editions - stopping REXing (rapid expansion) by curtailing a tribe's capacity to plonk down tons of cities in the early game.

There are lots of ways to fix your Classical Era economy - and razing and pillaging is certainly one option.

Recognised technologies of particular assistance are Currency (extra :traderoute: in each city, Market, can include :gold: in trades) and Code of Laws (Courthouse, Caste System for Specialist Merchants, Forbidden Palace). Generally once you've got one if not both of these, you should be able to expand relatively comfortably provided that you have made some effort to develop a few commercial cities.

I'll beat Dave McW to it ... "cottages"! ;)
