For some Windows 10 users, they experienced cutting in and out of various sounds when engaging in Diplomacy with other civs. As requested, I made a special topic with the fix. In the Steam discussions, a guy posted what worked for him and since it worked for others there, I decided to re-post it here. There was the same success for the people that tried it here and it was then recommended to have a special sticky topic for easy access.

I will now quote his words:

"I fixed this by downloading this ---> http://www.indirectsound.com/

Put the two files in the zip in the "Conquests" folder. I've used this for a lot of older games to enable direct sound in Win 10. In this case it seems to fix a channel issue in the game under Win 10 recent update where sounds are limited to just 2 channels. Putting this in the directory allows multiple channels again so that you can hear diplo music and sound effects without them cutting out due to having no open channel to go in to."

Special thanks to him!

Thank you! Just found this thread and had the problem where my speakers screech every time the diplomacy screen pops up. Was worried it was going to blow them out someday. Fixed it.

Works for me too. Thanks!

@Vincour
it sadly didnt work with me, it did work in my last computer it had but not in this one

Used to work but then i switched computers and it no longer works. Why?? I'd love to get this problem fixed, i even made an account here just for this problem and i've been trying to tackle it for months. I know im doing it right since it worked on the last computer. Did windows 11 screw up things even more?

I have same problem with new win 10 PC. i fixed it by installing Visual Studio 2010 (x86) Redistributable as indirect sound's 'How do i use it' said.
VS 2010 redistributable is no longer supported. i found another download site and share it here.
https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/cpp/windows/latest-supported-vc-redist?view=msvc-170
scroll down to 'Visual Studio 2010' and download 'x86' version.
THANK YOU!! I mean it from the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU! I've spent months and countless hours trying everything and literally everything I thought of when the indirect sound thing did not work for me like it seems to work for other people. This worked!! I am so grateful. Just.... thank you! You don't know how much this means to me (probably a bit too much)

This Fix also works for Windows 11 using the GOG Version for Civ Conquests.

Just need the 2 Indirect Sounds placed in the Conquests Folder and install Visual Studio 2010 (VC++10.0) SP1 X86

There does seem to be something in this, I was trying to help someone work out what the difference was between their PC and mine when they found the same thing. Worked on one of their PCs but not the other. Anything you can report about which OS both your PCs are running, and which visual studio runtime/windows sdk stuff is installed in the "add/remove programs" menu would be useful. Anything difference in the sound setup as well (driver versions etc). Then we could either recommend an additional dependency or report it to the author with a reproducible test case.
