Fix-It List

Thank you but I'm a bit slow when it comes to computers.
By vendor you mean?

Edit: If you mean by where I downloaded it from, it would be from the disks.
-Though I'm not sure if that's what you mean.

It is just CivIV, no expansion and yes I did recently install a patch.
Though it's working now, thank you for your help.

Okay, here is my problem that has me stumped.

I was playing Civ IV with no problem for a while. I regularly did the updates that were available ever once in a while. If I remember correctly, once when I updated it and the program closed out, it wouldn't let me back on due to an error message and so forth.

Then I tried to uninstall it in hopes of just simply reinstalling it. It wouldn't allow me to do that for some error. Then I deleted the files of the game and tried reinstalling it to no avail. So I'm kinda in a tough spot where I can't install it or reinstall it.

I looked on the tech support page on the Civ IV website and they said: Corrupted Installation Files (from Macrovision support)

Error Code: -5009 : 0x8000ffff

1) Clean out the temp folder. The temp folder can be determined from the TEMP environment variable. Open command prompt and type "set temp" to see the value then go to that folder and delete all the files/folders within it.

2) Corrupt InstallShield files. Go to C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\Professional\RunTime and delete or rename IsProBE.tlb then re-run the installer.

I did both of those things and now when i try to uninstall it, the program can't find the install shield file which i just deleted.

Does anyone know of anyway i can just get the damn thing off of my computer so i can hopefully reinstall it. I'm going to contact their support too.

:confused:

Wanted to get back into CIV4 after a long break, but the Vista problems are still around it seems. I thought I'd learnt to deal with them in the past, but perhaps my memory is starting to fade. This is a new machine as well, so the usual fixes may not have done much to correct the issue.

So far I have:
1) Set Civ4 to 'run as admin' and run under 'compatibility mode as XP service pack 2'. 2) Used the dx9.0c install client on the Windows website, as suggested in multiple places in these forums

Unfortunately, I still have not gotten the game to load once after installation. My game crashes as the Civ4 start-up screen says 'Check XML'.

Here's my dxdiag:

Thanks,

I recently found the Thomas' War mod and thought it looked cool, so I downloaded it loaded it up and.....no interface. Following the advice of the creator of the mod, I turned on python exception messages and two windows popped up:

Window 1:

traceback (most recent call last):
file "CvEventInterface", line 23, in onEvent
file "CvCustomEventManager", line 151, in handleEvent
file "CvCustomEventManager", line 162, in _handleDefaultEvent
file "CvEventManager", line 599, in onGameStart
AttributeError: 'module' object has no attribute 'resetNoLiberateCities'

Window 2:

traceback (most recent call last):
file "CvScreensInterface", line 710, in forceScreenRedraw
file "CvMainInterface", line 891, in redraw
file "CvMainInterface", line 1308, in updatePlotListButtons
AttributeError: 'CyUnit' object has no attribute 'getButton'

My first instinct was to try reinstalling BTS, and I got the error (-5006 : 0x080030005) whenever I tried to uninstall the game. This uninstallation error pops up when I try to uninstall warlords and civIV as well.

This thread is huge, and as such I did not feel like going through the whole thing to see if one of these problems had already been addressed. If there is already a posted solution, I would much appreciate a link to it.

@gamelan:

Welcome to CFC :band:
is the game patched to 1.74?

@Oranos:

Welcome to CFC :band:
the python exceptions are very likely bugs in the mod and you should post them in the thread maintaining that. Does the game start after these errors (unmodded)?

Hi Ori,

Nope, I haven't installed any game patches thinking they would auto-install in-game once I successfully got it running. Do you recommend installing them?

Alex

@Oranos:
you will likely need to manually remove the game if you want to uninstall it or reinstall it to repair missing registry keys. I linked to the Thomas War mod thread in another thread of yours.

@gamelan:
you should patch the game then since only 1.74 is compatible with Vista - install 1.61 first then 1.74 and run both patches as administrator...

the below is a reinstall guide I wrote for Windows xp - what I'd do to get rid of all the registry keys is delete all that is listed there, reinstall and then use the uninstall routine and remove all that is listed again to remove every trace of the game - otherwise you could edit the windows registry yourself but that is not without dangers if you don't know what you are doing. Is this win xp or vista?

install the most recent version of DirectX 9c from Microsoft

then do the following for a clean reinstall:

Uninstall and Reinstall Civ4 Warlords BtS :

Try to follow this order when doing stuff:
Use Control panel to uninstall Beyond the Sword, then Warlords, then Civ4
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\my documents\my games\sid meier's civilization 4" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\my documents\my games\warlords" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\my documents\my games\beyond the sword" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\application data\my games\sid meier's civilization 4" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\application data\my games\warlords" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\application data\my games\beyond the sword" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\local settings\application data\my games\sid meier's civilization 4" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\local settings\application data\my games\warlords" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\local settings\application data\my games\beyond the sword" manually
(note: application data is a hidden directory so you need to configure windows explorer to show hidden files, also these directories in application data are sometimes removed by the uninstall routine)
Delete "...\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{CFBCE791-2D53-4FCE-B3FB-D6E01F4112E8}" (Civ4)
Delete "...\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{3E4B349F-10B5-4586-9D99-489A90A8B228}" (Warlords)
Delete "...\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{32E4F0D2-C135-475E-A841-1D59A0D22989}" (BtS)
(note: InstallShield Installation Information is a hidden directory so you need to configure windows explorer to show hidden files).
Install Civ4, immediately patch it to 1.61 (download it fresh from here)
Install Warlords, immediately patch it to 2.08 (download it fresh from here)
Install Beyond the Sword, immediately patch to 3.19 (download it fresh from here).

the general gist of it is similar: to reinstall you usually just need to remove the installation information subfolders - and make sure to install with administrator rights - i.e. right click on the installer and choose run as admin - do not rely on the autoplay feature to ask for permissions,

Hi. Me again. I seem to have this recurring issue that I'd like to stop before it gets too bad. Here's a screenshot:

It doesn't look so bad, but what happens is that when the game is loading, I can get this to appear for as much as 2 hours :eek: Is this a normal issue or not? The game works fine if this happens, but I don't get to play for a long time. When it goes on for a long time, I usually have to quit, but when I try to quit, I have to try to "end the process" maybe twelve times, and even then, I have to try it from the task manager. What may be causing this? :confused:
