Fix-It List

:hmm: without any error message whatsoever its hard to pinpoint - a firewall that is turning itself off? that sounds like a problem with either a crappy firewall or a virus/trojan infection on your computer by the way.
I fear I am at my wits end :dunno:

The firewall has been like this for a while and it was working still.

I have a Windows Vista and have been having problems installing the 1.74 patch for the last five days. I have the latest download of Direct X. The problem is, when I do install the file (I saved it to my desktop from multiple sites, as it won't even attempt through Firaxis download on the game itself) an error comes up that reads,

"The setup has detected that the version 1.09.000 os Sid Meirer's Civilization is already installed.

The setup is not compatible with this version."

Well, i've had a problem since day one. Bought the game, tried to install and through process of elimination - I found out that my 2nd CD was damaged and wouldn't transfer the data. So I got a NEW 2nd CD and now I get past the 1st CD download and I go to the 2nd (NEW CD) and I get either one of two problems.

1st - The set up simply freezes and says "Windows will notify you when a solution has been found"

OR

2nd - Error Code: -5011 : 0x8000ffff
Error Information:
>Kernel\ObjectWrapper.cpp (498)
>Kernel\IScriptWrapper.cpp (81)
>Kernel\ObjectWrapper.cpp (197)

Any idea of what I can do to fix this? I would appreciate it greatly. If you need any info on what i'm running computer-wise, it could be difficult to provide information because I don't know a whole lot other then it's Vista Business XD. I have downloaded DirectX and many other things this site has said to but I haven't found a solution yet. Any help would be great.

Thanks.

When starting the game, I got initialize renderer failed message. Here are my tries to solve:

Try 1:
1. Uninstall graphics driver, civ4 and all of its folders
2. deleting d3dx9_26.dll from system32 folder
3. reboot
3. installing civ4+directx
4. re-installing graphics driver

End result of try 1 --> same message error

Try 2:
1. Downloading PakBuild
2. Unpacking Assets0.fpk (can't find art0.fpk in my civ4 folder)
3. Replacing The "Art" folder located in my "Assets" folder with the "Art" folder generated by PakBuild

End result of try2 --> same error message

Here's my spec :
Motherboard --> ASUS P4PE-X
Graphics Driver --> 6.14.10.9371 WHQL for NVIDIA GeForce2 MX/MX400
Processor --> Intel Pentium 2.4 GHz (2 CPUs) --> Hyper Threading

My game is gliching so much my computer shuts down and I did all the requirements and still it kicks me outta the game and rarely shuts down.

Hi guys and gals. Proud owner of eBay copy of Civ IV Gold. Tried to install knowing that it would be a pain on my vista HP pavilion notebook, but thought I was prepared. I got the same error on installation as #688 (a redundancy error) and did not see a solution. Again thinking I was smart, I tried to load the CD info onto my desktop and do install from there. However, this too failed as data cabinet #2 (which holds most of the megs of the first disk) could not be read by my system and it failed to transfer. I have spent too much time at work now reading forums and fixes and can't find it. Can the Ori or some other greater mind than mine help? Thanks all.

is both a cyclic redundancy error? or is the second thing (copying to the hard drive) something else?
if it is both the the cyclic redundancy check error than the most likely explanation is that your disc is damaged

Welcome to Civfanatics :)

Gosh, thanks for the fast reply. The redundancy error is all I have experienced during installation. I did not attempt to install via desktop given the inability to transfer the large data file fearing another error.

Oh, and thanks for the welcome. I love the game and am excited about getting it to work on my newish laptop.

It does, although I do not recall specifically other than it was something about windows was unable to read either the data or the file and then it gives me the option to retry or cancel. Same message on retry.

If this isn't specific enough I will try to copy error message tonight.

you graphics card driver is :old: have you checked if there is a newer one?

I have graphics driver I got before I got the game. It is a Nvidia graphics card.

most likely its also a crc error (i.e. that it tells you that it cannot read the whole file and gives up) - in that case, unfortunately I fear the disc is most likely damaged

Ori, I think you may be correct. The problem with the redundancy error and the copy to desktop error for the cd all comes from the data2 file (all 534 MB or something close to that). The redundancy error comes on the pentagon.bik; similarly, the copying to desktop zips right along as well until 16 MB left and it crashes, saying it cannot read the source file.

I think I know the answer to this question, but yet I must ask it. Is it possible to get a good data2 file from somewhere, or must I try to round up (and pay for) another copy of the game? I really think if I can get that file copied I can install from desktop. But I also don't think you can fix a file that comprises 80% of the all important disk 1.

I hope you don't mind me jumping in with a suggestion, but I have had this type of problem before with discs and games. The symptons you describe are as Ori indicated a damaged disk.

This is most likely a deep scratch on the disc, that is preventing a proper read by the system.

I know this is gonna sound crazy :crazyeye: but before you spend any more money, try the following:

Spread a thin layer of toothpaste on the scratch, and using a damp cloth to wipe off the excess. This should remove the toothpaste residue from everywhere but within the scratch.

As I said before, I've had this problem in the past, and done what I suggested and believe it or not it works !!!

Try googling this technique, and you'll see that it is a known way to overcome this type of problem.

Goodluck! Let me know if it works

Cheers

After the latest Windows update when I start BTS, it starts in windowed mode and scrolling does not work. By windowed mode I mean the blue bar up at the top with the ability to minimize and maximize and just quit out of the program altogether.

I am happy, although a bit mystified, to report that the toothpaste technique worked! :goodjob: I was able to install all disks without a hitch and began playing within an hour of adding Colgate (with whitening power) to my damaged disk 1. Thanks for all of your help folks, and hopefully now I can post in the strategy threads rather than the fix-it threads!
