Fix-It List

I am happy, although a bit mystified, to report that the toothpaste technique worked! :goodjob: I was able to install all disks without a hitch and began playing within an hour of adding Colgate (with whitening power) to my damaged disk 1. Thanks for all of your help folks, and hopefully now I can post in the strategy threads rather than the fix-it threads!

Great to hear it worked !!

I hear Colgate (with whitening power) works the best

Can someone please respond to my problem :(

did you check if there is a newer one available?

It has been working for a long time. I even have Star Wars Battlefront 2 and it works with the graphics card. I don't think it is that...

Hi,
I have just purchased Civ IV, bit late I know, but I buy games late like that!

I am running on Vista, on a dual core with 2GB RAM, an 18 month old high spec Dell with good graphics etc etc.

It installs OK, no problem, but when I try to run it I get a pop up:

Civilization4.exe - Bad Image
C:\Windows\AppPatch\acres.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support.

It then starts to run the game, but crashes out on 'checking xml' every time.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled tons of times in the hope it will correct itself, but to no avail. I really want to play this game!

I don't even think this .dll is part of Civ 4, but I can't figure out what it is, and i can't delete or rename it...

Any ideas???
:dunno:

Feature: DefaultFeature
Component: Civ4 Component
File:
Error: The File or Directory is corrupted or unreadable.

Ok so that is what my error message reads. I'm awful with computers, and I have no idea what this means. I know assuredly that I have every system requirement. This just keeps popping up during the installation. Can someone please tell me what's going on.

Welcome both of you :)
both errors either point to a dirty or scratched cd

I want to say thank you, and tell you that it is working now, but it isn't :( Haha, I just bought it the day I last posted for help. I don't know what it could be, but I cleaned it, and the error still pops up. I had my room mate look at it, and she said the CD looked really clean, too. Is there another solution other than the CD?

Hi All, according to post #1 to clear the cache you follow these instructions.

11. Clear the Game Cache

There is a game cache in the user profile. Apparently some config info gets saved there, so it should be cleared after every change. Look for it here
C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\My Games\Civilization IV\cache (WinXP).

When i tried to follow this i got as far as My Games and the folder is empty, has the location of the cache changed since this info was originally published?
I have made some changes to my ini file which stopped a lot of my CtD problems only now i'm getting MAF's instead. Can anyone help?

Could someone advice me a little.. I'm having trouble loading mods. When I try to load them it just thinks for a while and then crashes. I'm using Vista 64 and I have the complete edition and I've patched bts to 3.17. It's the same problem with every mod I've tried.

could you have a look in the windows event meanger? is there any message regarding the game?

also please open you my games\beyond the sword\civilizationIV.ini and set all items with log in their name from 0 to 1 then save. Then start a game and try to load a mod. When that fails please post the contents of my games\beyond the sword\logs as a zip file attachment.

Hi all,

I have a laptop with windows vista and I recently purchased the warlords expansion pack. Civ 4 works perfectly fine and I seemed to have installed the warlords expansion fine as well. But when I go to play the warlords expansion it comes up with the loading screen, this lasts for about 1-2 mins before a windows message comes up saying it windows cannot run the program, windows is trying to find the pronlem etc and then closes.

Ive tried installing and uninstalling it a few times, restarting etc. Is it just a faulty game??? I have no idea, please help guys????

First, I've had Civilization 4 with Warlords for a while now and it has worked fine.

I installed Beyond the Sword and everything went fine. I run it and I can only half the screen. The image (of the starting menu) is super long horizontally and half of it is off of my screen. Changing the resolution in game (I can see enough to do it, partly blind) has no effect.

I meet the requirements and am running Windows XP. I have the latest patch and my graphics drivers are up-to-date as of about a week ago.

Both other games still run normally. Any ideas?

And sorry, I did a terrible job of describing that.

Hi,

In the past I've played Civ IV successfully on Vista. I recently bought a new computer w/Vista and it won't even install. The error it is giving me is -5004 : 0x80070002. Does anyone have a clue what that might be?

Thanks
