I've never even heard of the Windows Registry:blush: How do I edit it?:confused:
 
you use the program
regedit
that is a part of windows - but making a mistake with this has the very real possibility of making your computer unbootable - so I don't want you to start doing stuff without knowing what to do.
Do the following:
get CCleaner
and click on tools
then on uninstall
and choose the game - then uninstall
if/once that fails
click on registry
scan the registry and clean it make sure to save a backup when it prompts you to do so.
That *should* take care of the problem. If not one would need to manually edit the registry but as I said I'd rather not explain this remotely :)
 
It still wouldn't let me uninstall the game. Was there a step I missed? It only asked me to back up the files after it asked me if I wanted to fix the issue. To fix it, it deleted all the files. Was that what was supposed to happen?

now: this should have removed all traces of the game - is it still listed under uninstall?
if so click on Delete Entry - there is an uninstall registry key which I am not sure if it is removed by the cleaning.
Did you want to reinstall the game?
if so: after having done the above, restart the computer and try to reinstall.
 
It was still listed under uninstall. I couldn't find Delete Entry. Is it supposed to be right-click? Either way, I couldn't find it. Yeah, I wanted to reinstall the game. Nothing changed after rebooting...

So, I installed Civ. IV on one of my computers, and it worked fine. It updated ok, and currently is running well. I want to install it on another computer, so I did, then updated to version 1.74 as prompted. But, when I do (I tried on 3 different computers, same result) I get some error that says something like "unable to find valid source" when it is about to finish installing the update. I close that and it says it updated, and no surprise, when it starts, it says

"This application failed to start because D3DX9_32.DLL was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem"

Then I try to uninstall it, and something goes wrong, and I cant even uninstall (well, I did with ccleaner eventually). Any suggestions? Any help would be appreciated.
 
My problem is when I'm playing for a certain amount of time and the game just shuts off and goes back to desktop. I'm guessing it's a problem with my RAM or graphics card...any suggestions? I'm currently playing on Beyond the Sword expansion with the version 3.17 patch

I'm currently using xp with sp3, but I had vista before and the same problem occurred. I thought it was vista causing the problem but I guess not. There are no noises at all when the problem occurs. I don't know if the graphics driver is updated to be honest. After my system restore I just reinstalled my graphics card using the disk. It's a PCI graphics slot. I use world builder a lot too because I like to create my own scenarios etc. I've heard that world builder can corrupt data but I don't know if this is a hoax or not. I'm pretty sure I'll have the same problem even if I didn't use world builder.

I just bought Civ 4 the complete edition. In BTS my barrage promotion doesn't work, 3 gorges dam and hydro plants produce power pollution. I checked for patches...seems like these bugs were fixed with patches. I download and installed patch 3.17e. No fixes. Tried 3.17 (no e) from another site, still no fix. Anyone else with this problem. Anyway to fix it?

1) Barrage is now useless for units that do not do collateral damage natively (i.e. tanks) - this was a deliberate change, though they forgot to remove the promotion for tanks
2) power now always gives 2 :yuck:, dirty power gives 2 additional :yuck: - also a deliberate change :)
 
I've got Civ4 etc. it was running ok, on a Vista64 bit platform, all current drivers etc. A few weeks ago it just died. I tried all I could to debug. No luck. Then I uninstalled it. The reinstall suffers catistrophic failure and will not install on the second disk. It crashes hard, with no possible recovery, immediately when disk 2 is in. I've attempted this multiple times with different variations.

Anyone have any idea?
 
I'm back :P I've got a new issue with Python/Uncached XML. I've followed your instructions to the letter again and was unable to fix it this time. I contacted Firaxis and they said my card is not right to play BtS specifically. But I've had this computer since October and it's worked fine until now. This last issue was after trying to install a leaderhead created by someone here on CFC (good work btw) and after following Wolfshanze's instructions it came up with an uncached XML error. You can see the thread at http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=323351 I simply cannot believe that my computer is unable to support BtS because of the long amount of time I've been able to play it. After a little while of trying to deal with the uncached XML problem, it suddenly came back up with that Python issue I used to have. I followed the instructions you gave me again and when checking if Vanilla worked, it stopped when loading MP/Voice. It simply stopped responding. However, knew that BtS only needs Vanilla to be installed to work, I proceeded installing it. It installed successfully, but still gave me the Python error. Note: because the Python loads before the uncached XML, I am unable to produce a screenshot of the uncached XML load error. I have not tried playing on Warlords because last time I did it suddenly quit. I can still play CivIII though, (I have complete) and the only issues I've had there are various errors on my part while modding :p [offtopic] If worst comes to worst, I can always uninstall Civ4 and get Colonization and hope that will work :p Thanks
