Flag Burning?

Do you think that flag burning should be allowed?

It may be legal, but just dont do it. IMHO anyone who burns an American flag does not deserve your freedom of speech provided to you by the government.
Anyone who hates america is an enemy of mine and is deserving of nothing but my deepest hatred and animosity.

I think flag burning should be allowed, but the flag burners would have to pay the consequences for burning a flag.

The government does not provide free speech.

Yes I hate them! And yet, I pity them...

Its like the Honor System. Government gives you free speech they assume your not going to abuse it. I also think nazis, Klansman, and sex offenders should be denied these rights. But then again this is America. But on the other hand when does it stop? Are we going to have to suit the needs of everyone? We have to draw the line somewhere.

You've got it backwards. Everybody has free speech--nobody gives it to you; the government simply can't take it away.

While I think Flag Burning is incredibly disrespectful especially by a countries citizens, it is a form of free speech that is protected under the constitution. Free speech can't be curtailed to what is popular, so it is protected and should remain protected.

I agree it is disrespectful but free speech should prevail over what is wrong.
:goodjob:

I think flag burning as a form of protest is reprehensible. However, it is a form of protest and therefore protected speech.

What I meant was the people who drafted the constitution assumed people would not burn the flag of the nation which provides them with these rights

Why do you think they made that assumption? I'm sure many of them would have understood desecration of the British flag.

I disagree. The right to burn the flag is the sort of thing they most likely wanted to protect the most.

I view desecrating the Constitution as disrepectful and unpatriotic.

And yet...isnt it just a piece of paper, just like the flag is just a piece of cloth?

I would view burning the constitution the same as I view burning the flag. But using due process to add to the consitution is not being disrespectful nor unpatriotic in any way.

I most certainly do wish that the Constitution and its freedoms were taken as seriously as some people take a piece of cloth. Amending the Constitution to specifically diminish freedom of expression is absurd.

Not all expression is free, nor should it be. To openly allow anything in the name of freedom is to only invite anarchy to our nation.
