How do you get ten or more cities at 1000 BC ? I ended up with only five, and at the expense of having not a single city improvement (let alone a wonder).

I took a quick look at this one over the weekend but did not find any nearby 4-special spots for an Early Landing game, so I am going to punt this month. Best of luck.

It's not fair!

I launched my little spaceship to arrive in 1977. The the nasty Mongols launched a bigger spaceship to arrive in 1977. 'That's OK,' I thought, 'as I get my turn before they do.'

But it cheated..... their ship arrived at the end of their 1976 go - so I missed out!

At 1AD I am progressing well in all out conquest mode.24 cities, almost all of which are churning out vet knights and boats.Hanging Gardens and War Academy built.
21 techs but have been running 40-20-40 tax rate for some time now.Using the gold to incrementally rush knights in 5 sheild increments

Forces:
6 settlers
3 warrior
1 phalanx
4 horsemen
21 pikemen(vets)
28 knights(vets)
11 trireme
2 explorers

Emperor, Normal Flat Map, Raging, Islands, Alphabet Bronze Pottery

Not as dramatic as Smash, but here are quite a few cities:

I built Marco, the Gardens and the Lighthouse. Conquered the flat world with crusaders (much less numerous than the knights mentioned by smash :scan: ). Last Jap city conquered in X20.

with some improvement to

(which you probably reached around 500BC). Of course I would like to blame it on the 1st hut (warrior code, of all things), but then I was also afraid of those `Raging Hordes' (which never showed up) and proceeded to build two archers before the first settler. I also spread my cities quite far apart, with York three tiles south of London and Nottingham three tiles west of York; all connected by roads. My first trade route only came way in the AD's after completing 4 wonders. At least I formed monarchy in 2050BC as well.

Well I have finished. Also having Japan as my last.Finished in x40.Its fairly early but I have a feeling la fayette has me by a few turns.

Marco provides knowledge about where to find the foes and the Lighthouse helps to get there safely, but 11 triremes and 28 knights are able to explore a large area quickly...
I wouldn't bet.

One of these days, I'm going to have to again try the Sun Tzu/Monarchy approach to early World Domination; it's been ages since I've tried that.

I'm at 1200 ad, about ten turns into the "prep" phase prior to Modernization (i.e., going through the Second Agricultural Revolution -- give me those Engineers!)

Well I opted for the slow method -- saw the two specials & wondered about the value of the ishmus as opposed to the possibility of a four special site. Hut gives a chariot, second settler moves as well. Start irrigating & Found London in 3900. York is founded late after in 3000. Fumble the science -- discover Monarchy in 2050, so The revolt occurs later -- King is crowned in 1850. Have four cities & * techs by -1500. Have five cities & nine techs by -1000.

Have the HG & Col in London by 1 AD; ten cities (well spaced & 15 techs) revolt to Republic soon after (60 AD). First trade route in 140, third trade route by 220 AD.

I’m a little after 1000 AD with Cope’s, Mike’s & KRC all in London, five more wonders available & too many opportunities for search & expansion -- may have to fight soon as well.

Elephant,

I tried Early Landing and a good 4 special SSC site isn't really needed here since caravan rehoming is allowed. Any coastal city will do. Emperor level lets you build more helpers as well.

I have played till 1AD and here is my log:

4000 Hut - Archer (NON), London
3850 York
3800 Code of Laws
3500 Writing
3100 Literacy, Nottingham
3000 Hastings
2750 Republic
2650 Form Republic
2450 Map Making
2400 Canterbury
2250 Currency
2150 Coventry (SSC)
2000 Trade

1650 London builds Marco Polo, Ceremonial Burial + Mysticism + Masonry from Persians + Peace + Share Maps, Give all techs to Mongols + Peace + Share Maps, Share Maps + Peace with Japanese + Spanish

1600 Warwick
1550 Philosophy + Medicine

My plan is to build Shakespeare's Theater early and grow my SSC to maximum size. I have planned my tech trading with the AI so I could get Medicine as the free tech. Now it is time to build caravans. I want HG as well as ST so that size 3 helper cities don't need temples.

1350 Hut - Elephant
1100 Coventry builds Hanging Gardens
950 Seafaring, Get Construction + Horseback Riding from Persians

HBR was needed for the Wheel so that Sanitation could be researched in time.

75 Physics, Coventry builds Leonardo's Workshop
25 Gunpowder

I traded with the Mongols early in the game but after Invention/Navigation I sent my ships to Persia. I built Leo's to get the triremes upgraded but I'm not sure if it was worth it since I don't have many units.

1AD Statistics

I formed republic only in AD 700, when the population was already 1,130,000 in 20 cities. Excesive trading with the Mongols then led to THEM having a productivity of 92% (while still in monarchy, no less). 300 years later I've gotten to

I founded two cities on the small continent next to the Romans and let them grow. A circular ship chain between that site and my SSC enabled me to trade demanded oil on every turn late in the game which let me research one tech per turn and meanwhile build up the rest of my empire.

835 Landing on AC

Wow, cliff! That's incredible! :goodjob:

Here's a quick summary of mine...
Behold the power of Sleaze! Spent the first 3000 years building settlers and cramming in cities, with only a few horses for "regional defense" eventually more units were needed for martial law. Once the north end of the continent was full, cities there switched to food Caravans while the central and southern regions continued expansion. First priority wonder was HG, followed by a run to Feudalism for Sun Tzu. Realized (about the time the ships started sailing ;) ) that the Lighthouse would be also be important, so it was built as well. Once the wonders were in place, we built Triremes and Silly English Kniggets almost exclusively. Don't think I built a single city improvement. Only irrigated 2 flat squares (I did irrigate a few Pheasants into Buffalos, as well) and probably shouldn't have done them. Most cities were at either size 2 or size 3 with one being an elvis. Only the HG city got above 3 (size 4)

I stuffed about 15 or so cities on the home continent before venturing off, and got about 20 total on that island. Early growth was aided significantly by an advanced tribe from a hut in the south. Once I started to explore off the island I found the
large empty island to the west
. I was again helped out by an advanced tribe, and I started colonizing there as well. However, the cities on this continent probably cost more in resources to build and defend than they actually provided to the overall effort. I slowed city building down considerably when I got about 20-25 cities. I was spending a lot on pikers to quell riots in cities because I was getting lots of red unhappies, but still no Black dudes for the Gardens to work on. It turns out I could have kept adding cities as the riot factor eventually started kicking in just a few cities later.

Exploratory units found the spanish first, followed by the Persians. I almost sailed right past the Romans as I was wrapping up the spanish, but luckily I saw a warrior that gave away their location.

I might have been able to finish a couple turns sooner, had I not been trying to keep my rep spotless. I got greedy and took some serious money offered for peace and cease fires, and it took more turns than I would have liked to get them to declare war again. This delayed my ability to move on to the Mongols and Japanese for the final blows.

I threw in a little shameless score padding on the last couple turns by raising luxury rate, reassigning workers for more happiness, building into cities with settlers, and rushing a wonder. Had I thought about it earlier, I probably could have gotten a couple more wonders in by disbanding units and rushbuying.

Game won by Conquest in 25 BC
I think I ended with 38 total cities including the ones that were captured.
