Flood Plains

Not much you can do. National Park would eliminate the problem, but if your city isn't starving/can work the whole BFC without starving, it's fine.

:yup: There is one. It's a National Wonder.

It's lategame - Biology is the requisite tech IIRC.

I have been playing Civ 4 for many years, and when I get biology, I never ever get the opportunity to build a national park

Oh. I think you have to build a certain number of some building or something...

EDIT: Never mind, you don't. I've just realised: it was only introduced in Beyond the Sword .

In late game :yuck: is rarely a problem thanks to Biology farms that counter the food loss. It happened that my FP cities has 10-ish excess :yuck:, but as long as you are not starving you shouldn't give it much consideration to :yuck:, unlike unhappy faces.

That summed up my 4 posts in one .

If it was healthy before it's possible an enemy used espionage to poison the water or something, in which case the unhealthiness will go away soon (till they do it again ). Espionage is BTS too though, so probably not that.

I disagree that you shouldn't worry about unhealthiness in the late game. Every two :health: saved is another specialist.

HELP... please. My capital city is SICK and surrounded by flood plains. I have ecology, medicine, refrigeration. I have built hospital, granary, grocer, supermarket, recycling center, aqueduct.
Geez what else do they want?

Make sure you have access to all the resources for the granary, grocer and supermarket.Thats +11 health right there.Eventually though citys will get sick and their growth slows down.

If you haven't yet, open up the foreign advisor and look to see who will trade you any health resources you don't have. It's a two-fer: you get more health, and you get a better diplo. relation with the AIs you're trading with.

Sickness is nothing to be ashamed of. It's just a one food penalty. That said, I doubt you have all the health resources.

Environmentalism?

Do you have resrouces? Several of those only give health bonuses if you have resources - corn, rice, wheat, cow, sheep, pig, deer... er, wine and spice?

One thing to do is to not use a city with a lot of floodplains as a production site and so don't build factory/power plant there. If that's a problem, you can't really fix it at this date, of course.

Thank you all. Genetics fixed it eventually (and I don't usually go for that ahead of a lot of other stuff) also i took yr advice and did not build factory, power plant, airport or laboratory there. Hey, they had corn, sugar, banana, rice, spices, wine, cow, sheep.
And still they were sick :(

And to the military gentleman here: It worries me when my people are sick.

btw what IS it with that Japanese ruler? Never friendly. hrrrrrrrrmph.

Thank you all, again

Replace a couple farms with workshops. You'll lose one or two pop to starvation, but you'll gain a bunch of production in exchange.

If a location has a lot of floodplains it is often a good idea to try to split them among several cities, a little unhealthiness is easy to deal with but a lot is of it is not.

Food is a valuable resource worth hammers through whipping or GPPs from specialists and should not be wasted on unhealthiness.

Are you trading for health resources? If it's a real problem, you could research Genetics or adopt Environmentalism. But often you just live with it - it's still food neutral at worst if you're working it.

I'm playing Egypt on Earth18 as an OCC. I've got -6 health in my city but am researching like a madman with cottaged flood plains (pre-Biology). The Green tendrils are annoying but sometimes it can't be helped. After I farm them over after Biology I may set a record for unhealth.
