football thread No11

Santos and Vasco in Série B would've been hilarious.

Basco are used to it at this point, they've been relegated five times, and Santos always seems to pull a great escape out of nowhere when they're threatened.

Botafogo though...Choking not just a historically enormous lead but also every single game individually, especially considering they haven't won the league since 1995, has been unbelievable to see. They're on their fifth manager this season!

Yyyyes. Quite. It really does look like the year where streaks are broken.

I hear some fans burned a player's car in São paulo.

Hello, it's 43 minutes into this glorious second half and we're winning 3-1 and have just been awarded a penalty… what do you mean we cannot lose? Is that a challenge? Engage Botafocagão mode!

Crisis in Turkish football! A club president went onto the field to beat up a referee so all referees, not just the one assaulted, have quit.

Go Girona, go! From relegation to league champions in just a couple years! The Leicester story.

Was just about to post about that. Top of the league, above Real Madrid and just beat Barcelona 4-2.

If I'm not misremembering, I read on the Guardian that this is just their third year in the top-flight. So even more impressive than Leicester

Well, people on r/futebol were half-jokingly, half-seriously proposing Zagallo and now that won't be anymore.

:(

What a win for Manchester City! And what a return for Kevin de Bruyne!

I wouldn't want to be a Newcastle player right now. Imagine playing your best game of the season only for a single man to make it all count for naught

No treble for Real Madrid this season . Knocked out by Atleti in the Copa del Rey.

That was such a good finish by Antoine Griezmann though

I presume that your tears are an expression of joy?

Indian football fans have decided to malobsess with the Malaysia football team for some reason, so there's oodles of Indians cheering on Jordan on X/Twitter (Jordan beat Malaysia 4-0)

Ah, I see you're beginning to learn about football.

I do believe that what happened in Madrid was an instance of what is popularly known as ‘shameless matchfixing’.

The two decisions against Almeria were harsh but correct, but the one in favour of Vinicius was ridiculous. The referee only watched one angle of the replay (and to be fair from that angle it was 50-50 whether it hit the arm or the shoulder) but every other angle made it obvious it was a handball
