Forts in BFC cannot get resources?

I had this outlying trade-connected city on a hostile island, and I just needed two strategic resources on that landmass. So I built a city right in between (so the tiles of the resources were horizontally adjacent to the city tile) and then built forts on each resource, knowing that forts can also give me the resource, plus provide defensive bonuses for troops stationed on them.

I didn't get the resources. And now I'm confused.

For the record, I'm playing with the original Civilization IV plus Warlords plus Beyond the Sword, installed by the Civilization IV Complete disc.

Ok since when do forts secure resources? They only give provide the military functions (air base, naval base and missile base) as far as i know. Maybe I'm mistaken though...

If your game is in the original, forts don't give you resources. If the game is in BTS, you do get the resources but not the tile bonuses. Do you have the needed techs? Building a fort on a resource that you could not have developed otherwise (oil or spices for example) will not get you the resource until you research the required tech. You may also need a road in the fort to connect it to the city - just a guess on this one, I've never built a fort where I did not already have a road.

I have Beyond the Sword, and I do have the proper techs researched. However, I made the fallacious assumption that just because a resource was adjacent to a city doesn't make it connected.

Apparently, building a road to the tile adjacent to the city solved my problems.

Thanks. In retrospect, it was a pretty dumb mistake.

Why are you building forts on resources in your BFC? That doesn't make sense. You don't get the tile bonus when a citizen works that tile.

You can build forts in cultural borders outside your BFC - with a road - to get access to that resource instantly when the tech comes in. This works very nicely for oil as it kicks in immediately when Combustion is discovered.

After conquering all the land on my continent, I decided to expand to the next one. So I quickly secured a small enemy city in contentious grounds on the next continent. Around this city are two strategic resources I would like to have. Also, there are three hostile nations surrounding said city. (I have a major technological advantage, so it's okay). So I'd prefer to build forts on the resources, because, A., they're harder to pillage, and B., they can be defended effectively.

this is new to me.

your saying that if i build a fort on a gold hill that is NOT in my borders i will get the gold resource from it?

2 questions.

does it have to be in my cultural borders yes or no?

what happness if 2 civs have roads to the fort?

Yes, forts and roads connect resources. Yes, they have to be in your cultural borders. The 3rd question is irrelevant except for AI cultural pressure grabbing that tile.

Forts only provide defensive bonus in cultural borders too.

Forts actually do several cool things like letting you create canals for passage between 2 bodies of water - as long as the connected forts are adjacent to water. Great for those map layouts or if there is not passage in the Artics. For example, say you have a long N to S snaky landmass with a coastal city on a thin stretch of land in the middle with sea access to the eastern body of water, but 1 tile off the western body of water. If there is a marginal W coastal tile like desert or plains next to the city you can build a fort and send a ship through the city and fort into the Western body of water. Now you don't have to send ships all the way around the land mass. Many variations on this but the fort(s) always have to be next to water (or even ice water).

You can also station aircraft in forts.

Great ploy is to build forts on land oil resources which are often off the beaten path. As soon as combustion arrives you have instant oil without having to build the well.

Are the forts and the city they are connected to surrounded by hostile civs's culture?

It has to be in your CULTURAL borders but not in any of your cities workable borders, which makes the third question irrelevant.
