Forts

I don't build them all that much, but they can be a life saver as canals in certain situations (eg closed borders that prevent your navy from moving around your continent).

The ability to build canals is a great source of fun for me in these games. I am always on the lookout for a good place to put something that will connect bodies of water or shave off a few moves from my ships' movements. Thanks to the new forts, there are considerably more places where this can be done, and I no longer have to waste a settler in all cases. Naval speed is important in most games.

I think forts are very usefull in certain games even before BtS (in BTS they are very very good)

In my last game on normal i was on a continent with Mali above me near the flaciers, and Rome below me, but through a 2 tile choke point.

There was a Hill with Jungle on it, the BEST part about a fort is you dont need to clear the tile, so the tile was giving +100 defence, add that to Hill Defence Promotions and defence units become almost invincible.

When war finally broke out the romans would try come through the choke point, and i would be forced to attack me tile (even though they could og around it) coz i was bombarding their stack with catapults.

CONCLUSION:
Forts kick ass when you need to defend a choke point

I don't use them all that much, but they can be invaluable as canals. In fact, in an Earth Map I'm playing, I'm going to have to invade Israel (Sumeria renamed) just to be able to build a fort on the land bridge from the middle east to Africa. My last game the AI built a fort there, but he hasn't yet and Rome is getting impatient!

That, and putting them on oil resources so at combustion I have oil instantly.

I also find them quite usefull in large open land maps, next time i'll take a print screen to show.

Last time i used them alot was in a lakes map, where i would place them in stratigic spots which will contain only 2defence units with hill bonus, and 1-2 offensive units which will be able to counter their stupid pillaging units. It works well in places where you would rather not spend a large force defending cottages and improvements.

And this is all in just vanilla, in RTS it would be much MUCH more valuable
