Been a while since the last Fox Game ... time to get another one rolling.

Evem though I mentioned towards the end of Fox-40 that the next game will be a Pseudo-AW game ... well, guess what, I've changed my mind! Instead, it will be a straight-forward AW game. And since the last game was Immortal, this one can't possibly be anythng else but Deity.

Yes, you read it right, Deity-AW.

Pure suicide, right? Considering we lost in Fox-40 at Immortal ... Well, perhaps, but that shouldn't stop us having fun. I am crazy, afterall. Plus, we are going to get some help :D

But before we go into that, some premise of the game.

* * * * * * *

Legend has it that Uranus was the first ruler of all Universe. He was the first son of Gaia, but was also her husband as well. (Yeah, I know  ... , but that's how the story goes.) Uranus and Gaia had an impressive set of offspring. First, the Hecatoncheries were gods with fifty heads and hundred arms. Uranus hated the beasts, and imprisoned them beneath the Earth. Then were the Cyclopes, with only one eye on their forehead. They too were thrown into Tartarus by Uranus. Finally, there were the Titans, the Elder Gods. However, Gaia never accepted the fate of her children, and persuaded the Titans, led by Cronos, to revolt against Uranus. In the process, Cronos castrated Uranus and replaced Uranus as the ruler of the Universe.

However, history repeated itself. Cronos kept Hecatoncheries and Cyclopes imprisoned, and swallowed all his sons, the Olympians, apparently in fear of them revolting against him. Only one Titan, Zeus, was saved when Rhea, wife of Cronos, gave Cronos a stone to swallow instead. When Zeus reached adulthood, he used a potion concocted by Gaia to force Cronos to vomit out his siblings. Thereafter a long war that shook the very foundation of the world commenced between the Elder Gods, the Titans, and the Younger Gods, the Olympians. Zeus freed the Hecctoncheries and Cyclopes and enlisted their help in the fight against the Titans. Some Titans who thought Cronos was cruel, helped Zeus as well, while a few remained neutral. The war of the Gods -- Titanomachy -- ended with the Titans being casted to the Tartarus.

All seemed well after the legendary struggle, with Zeus being seemingly just, assigning positions and domains to the Olympians, as well as the Titans who fought alongside with Zeus. However, as time goes by, Zeus slowly delved into matters of, uh, eroticism, and his rule over the Olympians slowly degraded. The siblings and children of Zeus fight among each other, struggling for power and control. Meanwhile, the Titans trapped in Tartarus were stirring. They knew the rule of Olympians was coming to an end. However, being trapped for so long in Tartarus, they were too weak to fight. Instead, they foresaw that the Age of Men coming. It would be the mortals who would overcome the Olympians, and in the process free the Titans. With the rise of mankind, the Elder and Younger Gods would fade away from the mortal world into other domains where they would continue their eternal struggle ...

We play as Alexander of Greek, in a war against the Olympian Deities. The Gods themselves would be divided into two warring factions to make things interesting (simulating the internal struggle among the Olympians). The Titans, although still trapped in Tartarus and unable to join the struggle, are nevertheless able to channel some of their powers to aid us (how else can you expect mere mortals to win in a fight against the Gods?) -- all our initial units will be Hercules :D. To do that within the game mechanics of Civ4, we will begin with seven times seven Great Generals which can only be used to create Warlords -- no settling in cities as instructors, no building of military academy. Subsequent Generals generated from the experience bar can be used however we wish, just not the first 49 we stated with.

Game Settings
Civ: Greek
Leader: Alexander
Difficulty: Deity
Game Speed: Normal
Game Map: Fractal, Low Sea, Balanced, Standard size
Victory: Conquest only
Other Settings: Always War, No Tech Trading, Permanent War, No Vassal States
Additional Variant: We cannot build the Statue of Zeus, and City with Statue of Zeus when captured must be razed

Players
I am giving previous Fox-40 players first priorities to sign up (including those who expressed a desire to sign up the next Fox game at the end of that thread). If there are slots left after 24hrs, all will be welcomed.

It only became suicide after your "help".
Maybe you forgot when thinking of the variant but GGs cost unit maintenance so you'll start with -30ish gold per turn as you can't settle them. :mischief:

(Not a sign-up.)

Can't...pass...on...that...sign me up, Captain Sir :salute: !

If you have a slot free I would love to lose another Always War Game!!

Well .... at least it's not another OOC ;)

I'm in, if you'll have me again.

Thanks to the support for another certain los ... ;)

Let's get started then.

Not much surprises there. I half intended to change to Pericles for the creative trait (might be more useful than Aggressive given all units will be Warlords), but decided to stick with Alex.

As mentioned, the deities are divided into two groups fighting each other, unaware of the Titans secretly helping the puny mortals to bring them to their demise.

Fox50-game-groupings.jpg

Those colored in green are fighting against those colored in purple. As to the blue, that is us and the invisible titans that will give constantly supply us with Great Generals that can only be used as Warlords.

Fox50-game-start.jpg

We start with a group of seven generals. As pointed out by Rusten, the Great Generals indeed cost money (currently they cost 7g). Hence, I started us with a prophet as well, that must be settled immediately to offset the lost gold. Every few turnsets, once the current incarnation of the generals are almost used up, I will add another set of 7 generals.

Well, the Titans' help are only so much. We are on our own hereafter. So, let's discuss our next moves. Seems like the best is to settle where we are and go for mining and workboat then warrior. With fishes and clams, worker can wait a bit. Question is what to do next after mining. Two choices: Masonry to go for Great Wall (barbs is on) or Pyramids (take advantage of the Prophet), or Bronze Working (take advantage of Warlords' free upgrades). Personally, I'm inclined to go masonry first. In summary, here are the opening moves I propose:

Research: Mining > Masonry > Bronze Working
Production: Workboat > Warrior > Worker

Will play the first 15~20 turns in 24hrs time.

Might just be me but it just feels wrong for Titans to be worried about a bunch of Barbs running around in Animal Skins by building the Great Wall.

Not disagreeing with Masonry but Pyramids would feel more in theme than the Great Wall.

Lurker's Comment:
Do you now have an infinite supply of free GGs, or still just 49?

Actually, wouldn't the Statue of Zeus and Parthenon be the only wonders that are more in *theme* ?

@Ralph: deity barbs are ruthless. But yeah, the warlords should be able to do fairly well aginst them, taking advantage of a few promotions + free combat I from aggressive. The reason for GW is actually to steal from the Gods.

@Berserks: SoZ is out of bound. We are fighting Zeus, remember? By the variant, we are suppose to raze it when captured.

@ZPV: I have not make up my mind on that. Initially I wanted to give all 49 generals in the beginning to avoid accessing the world builder after the game has started. But the maintenance cost would required something like 7 GMs, 10 GPs or 12 GAs which are themselves overpowering. Hence I had no choice but to keep the titans-reincarnate 7 at a time (I will have to be careful to zoom in all the way before hitting Ctrl-W). This, however, does open up the opportunity for the Titans to gauge how well we are doing and decide if they would continue to help us :D

@Ozbenno: interesting suggestion to go AH. Why? No mammals are revealed near our settlers in the screenshot. Granted with balanced map, there would bound to be cows/sheep/pigs nearby, but certainly it do not have priority. One could argue for agriculture, but with the seafood available, I think agriculture could wait a while as well.

The only reason why we even want to attempt either the GW or the Pyramids is because of the stones. While I agree that we won't be attempting to build a wonder before a settler is out, we do want to get the quarry up ASAP for production bonus.

Having said that, I agree masonry may not need to be tech'ed so soon. We just have to time it so that the worker has something to do after building the gold mine. So we could indeed go AH, Agri, or even Archery and BW before Masonry.

Hercules had finally completed his great labors. But he could not forgive himself for his sins. Although the main culprit was actually Hera, he did slew his children and killed his best friend Iphitus. He sat there watching the new city, engulfed in sorrow and guilt.

"Heracles ..." Suddenly he heard a voice. He spun around, but saw no one there.

"Heracles."

"Who's there?"

"I am Ocenus, the Titan. Don't bother, you can't see me."

"Titan? Aren't you trapped in Tartarus?"

"Yes, but we are afterall Gods of the Gods."

"What do you want from me?"

"We share the sorrow you have, caused by the Olympians. We wish to help you exact revenge."

"Revenge?"

"Yes, for we know the time for Men has arrived. You shall lead them in a war against the Olympians, and usher in an era where mortals would roam freely in this world, without being dictated by those deities in Mount Olympia nor us, the Titans."

"How could we fight against the Gods? I may be strong, but I am only half God."

"We the Titans shall aid you. Seven of us have imbue our essence in seven mortals. They would help you in the coming battles. Like you, they may be mortals, but they can reincarnate themselves multiple times. You, however, cannot. Hence you shall lead them within the city of Athens, and let them fight the war against Olympia."

And so the war between mortals and the deities began ...

Fox50-BC4000-settle.jpg

As discussed, I started off with Mining and workboat. But Ozzy wants Animal Husbandry. And so we got Animal Husbandry.

Fox50-BC4000-tribal-AH.jpg

Thanks to the Titans :D

Another hut ...

Fox50-BC3720-hut-gold.jpg

Not so lucky this time. Titans also have their limits ;) They are, after all, stilled trapped somewhere.

We met our first deity, Pacal of Maya, coming from the northeast:

Fox50-BC3600-Mayan.jpg

No worry there, as we have our first Warlord:

Fox50-BC3440-warlord.jpg

Since AH is already in, I continued to get masonry. Stopped when Masonry is in. I selected BW tentatively. We could change to Archery or even Agriculture, but I think it is best to stick to BW. We don't really need the rice to be farmed ASAP, while barb archers are already appearing.

The next player can choose to attack the scout before pressing enter. I would do so (yes it is risky, but the odds were 89% in our favor), may be promote the warrior to combat II to get even better odds. The scout up north can enter another tribal hut next turn.

The map revealed so far:

Fox50-BC3320-map.jpg

A possible next site may be the phants to the east.

I suggest going for BW followed by Wheel. After worker, I suggest getting another warrior (or two), then settler.

Play around 15~20 turns. As usual, I rather players stop at logical decision points than predetermined number of turns. Also, I encourage players to precede each turnset report with a little story-telling.

One more thing. I noticed I mis-spelled our name as Hecurles. Feel free to correct it, Immy.

Hi guys

I have numerous problems with my pc. I'm quite frustrated and don't know how long it's going to take until I could play again. Considering that I don't fancy signing up anyway (tough I REALLY hate missing this game :hammer:).

I wish you good luck and an interesting game

Guys, I need a skip. I have a lot of stuff to do in the next few days. As a little sacrifice from my part for this I'll slot in after Ozbenno, so that I get a nice round of fine Fox :whipped: .
