Fox-50: Hercules Against Deities

Although the Titans were able to help Alexander and the Greeks in their war against the gods, they were still unable to keep pace with the advancements of the deities but still they held out hope.

fox1qh9.jpg

Part of the hope was that the gods might continue their own war and forget about the backwards Greeks, who could wait for the opportune moment to strike.

It came to pass that the Greeks learned the secrets of Writing.

civ4screenshot0004aj9.jpg

There were conflicting schools of thought as to what to discover next but once a bright sage mentioned that production is power, there was only one choice.

civ4screenshot0005qf1.jpg

The Titans were pleased at the choice and granted their heroic power to a newly graduated soldier.

civ4screenshot0006lt4.jpg

At the dying moments of this age, the Greeks have sent out the making of a new settlement. As to where it will be, well that is another story.

civ4screenshot0007pv5.jpg

Played a quiet 10 turns. 2 barb archers for no losses were the only actions.

I have a phalanx (with a sword on the way) to the NW barb city.

I was unsure about teh next tech after Writing, Code of Laws and Metal Casing were the two options I considered and MC won the day as we don't need too many courthouses yet.

Also was unsure about next city location. Originally was aiming at the elephants/fish in our east but thought we should aim for iron. Settler/phalanx unmoved. We should probably look at blocking Pacal off from the north soonish.

Lurker's Comment:

Hilarious reports all, very entertaining

I just wish I'd have that much hut-popping luck as you... and Copper, Iron, Gold, Clams, Stone and irrigated Rice in one BFC :p Will never settle in place again ;) This is gonna be a very interesting game, hope it lasts long :D

It does not seems like you will build more than 2 units (since the capitol is occupied with Pyramids) ... so the Titans will wait yet one more set. Go grab the save, Immy.

Metal casting is a good enough choice. Always good to have ample production. Seems like the AIs are busy in war mode (now I have a feeling this game might get too easy due to the AI's war ... we shall see), as the AI has only built the stonehenge. We might be able to sneak in a few more wonders if we can get other productive cities up.

I still prefer settling two east of cows to have another excellent production city. Also, we probably have to set sailing up and have some boats to protect our seafood from barb galleys.

Deity-AW too easy for mighty GreyFox? We shall see indeed

The tribute to the Gods is another Temple - and another Temple is a place where there shall be gathered people. So let us found a new place to the glory of the everlasting creation!

Now on with the Titans...

**************************

The Greeks brought wisdom to the local tribes and liberated them from cruel supression...

Yet the Deities first contested the strength of the young realm. It is to stand or to fall! So stand, my brothers!

The forces of the Deities closed in around the city...

But the Greeks ware laughing in the faces of their besiegers, as they were erecting a monument to outlast the course of time. The Gate to Heaven, and therefore a symbol of power and wisdom, and eternal life unbound by the circles of the Earth...

The battle before the gates of the city was bitter, and it lasted for 7 days. Yet in the end the Greeks prevailed although they were heavily outnumbered. But as history has shown many times, one Great can change the fates of a people by a sacrifice...

By nightfall of the eigth day none of the Deities' attack forces were living within the borders of the Greek, yet there were roaming parties of scattered enemies still at the borders...

Too easy? I don't think so.

We need more workers - and more troops. We got a GG and a GS - both in Athens. I named the GG Mephistopheles - nothing really related to Greek Myth, but there is a connection with the Greek World... :) I revolted to Rep on the last turn, MC in 2.

Oosh, things are heating up .... finally.

Great job defending. It is expected to lose a titans or two ... afterall, they are not fully Titans, just mortals being infused with their essence. Where one fell, seven shall arise! :cooool:

Both the GG and GS should be settled (if not already) to make good use of Rep. Time to crank some troops out and teach the PortugueseMayan a lesson or two about fighting with Warlords.

Got it, expect turnset to appear tomorrow around this time.

I have a feeling Corinth could've been better placed 1S of it's current location.

Immy, 3 of your screens didn't show for me. Other than that, looks like a great job smacking them Mayan Olympians or whatever they are.

@Fox:

I thought about moving Corinth - but decided against it because we can easily plant a few more cities down there. Corinth as it is can go as a good hybrid city. I did see the cows - but there is a barb city that can use it already, which we could capture...

Hercules was walking hurriedly along the cliffs when he bumped into Phoebe.

"Heracles, great to see you out here! Having some fresh air!"

"Not really. I go out to stop some workers from chopping trees unnecessarily, and building a barracks while there is better things to build. But boy, it is good to be out here! Those cellars could be stuffy!"

"Ha, that's what prophets do! They hide in the catacombs combing ancient 'holy' scripts interpreting the meanings of the Titans ... heh, most of them are nonsense anyway -- I simply sneezed, that's all. There were NO holy meanings. I just got dust in my nose."

"... ..."

"Hey, but to keep you accompany, I thought we just sent a Man-in-Black dude down there?"

"That sneaky guy? I don't see him half the time. ... oh, how I miss those days when I battered the Hydra and killed Medusa ..."

"Nah, YOU didn't kill the Gorgon sisters ... Perseus did."

"Okay, but you know what I mean. How I longed for the days of fighting ..."

"Cheer up, big fellow. If it could soothe you, we just killed some Mayans out there. Axes, Holkans, Swords, and Chariots ..."

Fox50-BC0825-battles.jpg

"Good for you. You guys get all the fun, while I slogged myself with reading creative misinterpretations of your sneezes and coughs."

"See ya, Heracles. I am going off to Sparta now, there were reports of the Olympians spitting out a huge invasion force there out of thin air."

Fox50-BC0650-maya-forces.jpg

"Have fun." Hercules watched as Pheobe sped away, then sighed, and returned to the castle ... where he bumped into Phoebe again.

"WTH? I thought you just left for Sparta?"

"Heh. I am everywhere."

And then another Phoebe walked in, "Hello, Heracles and ... me. Ah, don't look so shocked. You know very well there is going to be many of us. Right now, there are three: Me, Myself, and I. Me have gone to Sparta, while I came in and saw you talking to Myself."

"Which reminds me -- uh, I mean me as in me, not Me who went to Sparta -- do we have anymore pronouns left to use for Phoebe IV?"

* * * * *

As mentioned, barracks is useless. We have warlords. We need no stinking barracks. Also, some trees chopping were not needed. Those adjacent to cities facing the enemy side --yes, chopped them. But not those that enemy would not have reached.

We got a new influx of generals, and I settled the non-Titan one in Sparta, while the Sneaky One vanished into the city of Athens

Fox50-BC0850-GreatPeople.jpg

Sparta because I think we are going to build more forces in Sparta than in Athens (which should build a few more infrastructure, such as library, and perhaps lighthouse). The new GGs are almost used up by the end of my turnset, so we have another set of 7 waiting.

Fox50-BC0625-forces.jpg

It is otherwise an uneventful turnset, except for killing a few Mayans and towards the end, a moderate Mayan stack of swords and chariots appeared. Some pillaged our horse pasture (but not before I get a horse archer out). The rest, I tried blocking them, trying to force them to attack our phalanxes.

Research wise I went for Mathematics. We are getting a bit tied down with the maintenance, I have to drop science to 30%. But we are anyway going to rely mostly on specialist. So I suggest we hire a engineer in Athens once the forge is done, and then start a library. If we get a GE, we can then rush build the Alexandria Library.

As to Sparta, keep building troops. (A forge is good, but we cannot afford it now. Maybe it can build it once Athens take over with troop production after the library is built). We need to get a few swords out to take care of the barbs. We want the city closest to Athens as a commerce hub. Economy is going down the drain as it is now.

Then, once Maya have developed that nearby city for us, we can go get it. But I think we may have to defend for a while until we get phants.

I suspect from now on, we would need an influx of Titans every turnset.

Already played..... but too tired to post a decent story. Will do that tomorrow
I posted in the wrong thread, it seems .... ( this was meant for other game )

What I meant is to ask for a save... or do you want me to use Immy one ?

P.S Minotaur...... looks like a good idea ;) He surely has a lot of scores to settle with the Olympics :p

You sure you don't confuse that with the bed of Procrustes? ;)

Hercules was tired of of being a high priest to mankind. Hey, he had done the twelve works to end in Athens preaching against the Olympics? No way....

But first things first. it was finally time for Hercules to learn how to count
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0290.jpg

But learning how to count was not a stopper for Hercules..... there was one thing that made him foam in anger every time he remembered it: the only thing that a mortal had done instead of him: going to Hades kingdom and bring someone out of there, like Orpheus had done. Wrestling Cerebus was not a macht to that......

So when our workers discovered a way into the Hades in the recently made iron mine, it was not a surprise that Hercules jumped in as soon as he could get there:
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0292.jpg

Nobody knows exactly what happened in Erebus ( Hercules has a very bloated version, but nobody really believes in his version.... and no one is with will of going to ask Hades what happened ), but what is certain is that Hercules brough a soul out of Hades, one of the most improbable ones: Minotaur, that had a lot of reasons to want revenge of the Olympics too: born to punish a human that Zeus disliked and killed to give glory to a human the Olympics loved....
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0293.jpg

In spite of nobody knowing what really happened in Erebus, there should had been quite a stir, given that a group of souls emerged from there armed with axes that went straight to the closest Olympics they could find:
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0287.jpg

Our followers got behind them to see if we could take a Olympic city, but unfortunately our forces were too thin for that ( or, in Hercules version, the mortals had not done what they could to weaken the olympics for us )

On the other side of the empire, all the fight with the olympic followers got us a war hero:
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0289.jpg

Hercules decided to let him to stay in Athens teaching the art of war to the military. Maybe because of that our research in taming elephants to the war effort and on stone throwing machines got a unexpected development:
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0295.jpg

A great person appeard in our lands.... not Archimedes though, as we expected, but a master of deceit and tricks. Even Hercules is unsure of how to use his talents for our cause....
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0296.jpg

Now on serious stuff: Pacal has been whipping like crazy to pump units, but they had come in small and managable groups. Unfortunately the barb uprise have not killed any unit and we were one unit away of taking Calakmul ( it was better anyway... 3 swords appeard in the IBT.... our units would had been slaughtered ).

As i said , I settled the obtained GG in Athens, a thing that will give us some nicely promoted Phants out of there. Construction is 2 turns away if we push the slider to 100% ( a thing I strongly advice ).

What to do with the GSpy ( stupid odds.... I had hired a eng to try to push the GE odds up :( I unhired him this turn )? How about using him to infiltrate Pacal? Probably it would give us some techs as soon as we got spies........

To end: we are not the weakest dude in the board :woohoo: toku has been the receiving end of some olympic love ( :mischief: ). Probably the GG that was born in distant lands was connected with it
