I reckon one of the biggest obstacles to people getting into the uit-creating business is a) patience, and b) the expense of a 3D program. Now we all know about POVRay and GMAX, so I went and found another one:

Feature List
---------------
Modeling
  • SDS modeling, with sharp edges
  • Symmetrical meshes
  • Blob modeleing, with ellipse, 3D splines, 3D meshes.
  • 2D/3D curves: mixe of straight lines and splines, Read TTF font, Boolean operations.
  • Toolboxes on meshes, faces, edges and vertices, texture projection.
  • Use the mouse and/or the keyboard (numerical values)

Texturing
  • 4 Texture projectors: plane, cylinder, sphere and uv.
  • Procedural texture generated by scripts

Animation
  • Morphing
  • Skining

Export/Import
  • Export to: 3DS, OBJ, Direct X, DXF, VRML, Virtual Light, SunFlow, Virtual Light Possibility to add new exporter with scripts.
  • Import from: 3DS, LWO, OBJ, VRML, DXF
  • Export to POV, RENDERMAN.

File
  • All scene data (meshes, animation, texture...) save in one '.3de' file
  • A screenshot can be associated with a scene, so a scene preview is accecible
  • Image File: Read from GIF, Read/Write from JPG, BMP, TGA, PCX.

You know, someone could even use this program to have a bash at some of the suggestions in my Unit Request thread!

That looks like a good program... Has most of the basic functions and a lot of formats for a free program.

Hi,

I'm the developper of this program.
I'm currently working on a full import of LWO file format (objects, patches, metaballs, bones, materials and textures, and morph).
The new version will be out... soon (I hope), with a lot of new features like a full 3D manipulator, new custumisation of the interface (text buttons instead of icons, tool bar in the views, 3D grid), update of the modifiers tools so that they can work on mesh, faces, edges or vertices....
Here is a screen shot of the coming version (with an imported lwo model):

If some of you want to test the beta... just drop me an email.

Thanks for you support,

craouette
