This is a topic that came up in my literature class and is very interesting. Which would you rather have, freedom (like being able to walk up to gate in an airport), or security ( like everyone being searched and needing a ticket to get to the gate)?

I picked 50-50. I think we should be confident that we are protected by our government but not in a way so intrusive as to prevent us from going about our business.

Incidentally, one of the theories about government is related to the issue of freedom vs. security. In the past, absolutist governments were far more pervasive partially because people were more concerned with their safety than with their freedom of activity. There were more dangers in the past than in the present so that the average person was not disturbed by the prospect of having to surrender some personal liberty in exchange for a guarantee of avoiding a threat to life and limb.

"Any society which would give a little liberty to gain a little security deserves neither, and will lose both" -Ben Franklin

I'm voting 50/50, but I think that the concepts of "freedom" and "security" need to be better defined.

CartesianFart: perfect avatar for this thread, i noticed it before, but never had reason to mention it.

panopticon singularity.

anyway, everything is a balance, security just as long as it doesn't continue towards that singularity. As long as we don't get ourselves in a bad situation, and lock ourselves there, it's ok, as long as there's a way out, as long as we don't stifle the long term potential of humanity..

What would be better?

A CFC forum where you could post whatever you wanted and not having to worry about mods breathing down your neck, which resulted in a more hostile, less usefrienldy enviroment,

or

One that like the one that we have where we allow mods to keep the posters in check so that everyone can have their say in the safest possible enviroment?

That doesn't apply to this scenario. Having mods around doesn't make any of us safer, if you get my hint ;)
