FRESH! WWII with a twist

I'd change my ISP if I had to suffer that. Sorry Omega, I don't have FTP software, and I'd rather play. Rather than look it up, learn it, arrange with Thunderfall, etc...

Another option for me would be to find a free hosting site. Sigh. More surfing.

Anyhoo, if you have access to another compy, you could always just get a jumpdrive (15 bucks in Austin, IMS...) and download it at Kinkos. I'm not suggesting this just for my mod; it's very convenient, for drivers, demos, etc etc, since almost every comp has a USB port these days.
There's one site that most people use to host their files. Not sure what it's called... Somehting like 3ddownloads, or something like that.

DoraFidget.flc not found. And guess what. The unit folder has "Dorafigit.flc" and this just reminds me of the "SwordsmanSPACE" thing.

I could pass the buck to the unit maker, since I downloaded this, but I should have checked all entries tediously. SORRY!

I sorta consider this thing a work in progress, since I got a reminder of "They stole Hitler's Brain" and I'm thinking of adding this. Hah! Psyche! No, really.

If anyone wants to request something for a WWII mod that is willing to get campy, sarcastic, and at the same time serious and strategic, go ahead. But I draw the line at those Dr. Who "exterminate!" rolling zambonis. (Daleks?)

For example, I don't know why I didn't include the Small Wonder "Lend-Lease" since America has a unique resource and England a unique tech. It would be a perfect addition, since it would actually cause the AI to think about the alliance between England and America. Already, there is a Small wonder called "Rikshird" which is actually a Norwegian invention, basicly a Nordic Hitler Youth. It can already be adopted by America, if it plays that way. Too lazy to make L-L. No. Really, I wanted to PLAY instead of keep on modding this thing eternally. But having tested it, I want to tweak it untill it's perfect.

And part of perfection is not taking one's self too seriously. That's why I want to include Hitler's Brain. I already have UFOs fcs... I shall list my planned changes and addition in the next version (potentially the last, perfection is in sight) except Cream is on PBS, their reunion tour, and it's getting hard to concentrate...

Changes I want to make:

1. Add luxury and strategic resources to increase importance of trade.
2. Less oil, KEEP rubber rare, it was what the war was fought over.
3. Finally discover (via the forums?) how to make a resource disappear every 10 turns or so.
4. Increase heavy equipment costs
5. Discover by mystical means, a way to have useable Naval Mines. I suspect it might involve the HN flags and "Air Unit" with no immobility, but I'm still just floating it...
6. Add Lend-Lease, requires USA resource and Commonwealth Tech, produces a destroyer every 5 turns.
7. Clean up Civilopedia.
8. Keep units number under 300, but add many more air units; Spitfire, ME-109, Grumman and Junker as well. Also add Lightnings, possibly Mitchell as well as Russian early modern Migs.
9. Hitler's Brain. Graphic includes "Hitler is killed!" but not part of a regicide component. Wanna stay away from that I think. This Great Wonder produces much research, and allows for the Tesla Coil.
10. The Tesla Coil. This Gr W should produce a unit called the "Tesla Missile" and if I canno' find it, the engines they canno' stan' the strraaaainnn! I'm not sure I could make it, but I'm game to try...
11. Once the RFZ-1 is researched, the next step is of course, KLAATU.

I went for a Cultural Victory as Germany, and it proved way too easy. It made for an interesting tale to tell, since the war on the Eastern Front was not going well. I played Operation SeaLion and took much of England, after taking France and establishing Monrovia's African rubber. Then Russia declares war, and her massive size had enabled her to build a huge army. The IS2's were rolling over my eastern border. She took most of Poland and was on the doorstep of Berlin when the Concentration Camp in Schwerin put me over the Culture limit for a victory.

That was the plan. I accepted losses in the East, as long as I could keep producing SS Waffen troops which can enslave. I used Goering's ARMY to defend the front and occupy the Russians, but the NKVD agents kept sniping off my POWs. But I was also transporting POWs from Algiers and England, and it was enough.

My thoughts? Cultural Victory for a single city is based on a scenario without sacrifice. If you include sacrifice of units, and especially if you include a CivImp that doubles sacrifice, the single city CV is too easy.

Now I will be adding MUCH more CivImps, since people I know want to play without using combat. This scenario so far is pretty much all combat, all the time, with culture and research for gravy. Victory Points will be tweaked radically, making one city almost as large as the whole civ. For conquest, very small. The AI has never been able to keep up with me on that...

All in all I really enjoy this mod, since it reminds me so much of playing the boardgame "Third Reich" and I might be checking out some of the other WWII mods other players have made here...

I went completely apeshirt all over this mod for awhile, and added some units, and many Civic Improvements and Wonders. I was going for something as absurd as "They Found Hitler's Brain" and I wound up making something at least as campy as SJG's "Illuminati: NWO."

Added Templar Gold, Dead Sea Scrolls, Lend-Lease, Masonic Order, Novus Order Seclorum, Guidestone, Order of the Blue Druids, and numerous Improvements and units.

I chose "KSF Sturmsoldat" for the Reich jetpack soldiers, and improved its graphics using the Fallout unit.

I also cleaned up the Leaderheads and Civilopedia quite a bit. Also changed some buttons, namely the sacrifice buttons to reflect a Concentration Camp instead of a sword... Added some resources too.

Changed the costs to make building much more strategic, and tweaked the victory conditions to reflect a long-term strategy. Even if you want to go for a Culture win, you can do so as any civ (it helps to go for the New World Order) but the Reich has to really work at it, even with all the POWs...

All in all, I'm pleased. I didn't get "Hitler's Brain" but I think the mechanics aren't set up to allow it, really. Will be uploading ASAP, including saves.

The very first post in this thread is completely edited.

Clean links for all units and improvements for this newest (and latest) version of this strange mod. Includes Nazi jetpack soldiers, UFOs, Masons, Illuminati, and numerous Imps and Wonders.

Thanks David, I've been so preoccupied with the Max Hypertext Links Exceeded bug that I hadn't noticed. I'll set it straight right away.

Edit: rushed during Christmas season, work, etc, I hadn't noticed. The ME110 link should've been "Me110" and I overlooked the space in B-29 Bomber, thanks David..

Since I've figured out the bug for myself.

I have a hunch that GCON Civped entries have a command that refers to the first line in the entry, which is used by the game to alphabetize each one. If you change the default line by putting in a spacer, the game will show a civped entry at the end with a spacer heading...

I have a hunch that if you change this to include a link, you'll compound your problems...

I've cleaned up the Civilopedia to eliminate this. Hope it works. Always.

I'm flattered that you put in the time. I'm sure some people get used to multitasking their computers to download in one window while surfing in another, and the way I've set it up requires pretty steady attention. I hope you enjoy playing this.

I've been playing Italy several times, just because it's so danged hard to win as the Italians. That part is fun. Germany can become a juggernaut if played by a human, since the AI doesn't manage diplomacy very well, and a strong alliance is necessary to defeat Germany.

About any problems with the resources file, I've made sure it's correct, and if you're having problems, I suspect it might be caused by putting the downloaded file in the wrong folder? Be sure it's a lone file sticking out there in the Th_R_/Art folder, and not in some other Th_R_ folder.

If you've downloaded the files before 12/22, you should download this one file, the corrected PediaIcons. I've corrected the last of embarrassing typos that could cause Wonder Splashes to crash.

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads10/Th_R_02PediaIcons.zip

Save this zip file, and extract it into your Th_R_\Text folder. Click "overwrite" when prompted. This will replace the old PediaIcons file with a correct one.

An yer good to go.

Well, it took over an hour, but I've downloaded teh files, except teh resource file isn't working of me....:(

An afterthought, Omega: you might not have noticed that the resources file isn't zipped. It's just a pcx file when you download it, so all you need to do is place it in your Th_R_\Art folder.

Good luck.

BY THE WAY...

I'm thinking of making additions to this mod. Nothing drastic, like what might require numerous downloads, just one or two extras, like "Human Experimentation" and "The Black Arts"...

"Oh yes... There will be blood..."

So if you've tried this and think it can get any wierder, check it out in a few days (mebbie before the new year)

Well, it's not putting the art files in teh right place that's the problem... When I click on teh link to download them, it takes me to a new page that's filled with weird and random text. I've made teh game playable by changing all teh resource icons to tobacco, but I want to see the real resources....

Some random/weird stuff you can add:

-Hitler clones. I saw a movie, where Nazis who had escaped the Allies had created hundreds of Hitler clones, and scattered them around the world, in hopes that they would one day rise to lead the Nazis again. No idea how to implement it, but oh well.:D
-Dinasours! If you have PTW, you should already have the files, and then you can add a Dinasour Island with dinasour barbarians on it.:crazyeye:
Yeah, that's all I can think of now.... But this is probably the most original WWII scenario in everness.:goodjob:

Why didn't anyone politely inform me that I'd put Luxembourg in the wrong place? I wouldn't have been offended!

I've added several City Improvements, some units, and have cleaned up the hyperlink limit problem. Now includes New World Order, Dead Sea Scrolls, Lend-Lease, Klan Kuklos, Tesla Coil (and missile), Stonehenge, Blue Druids, The Guidestone, 2 flag units and other stuff.

If anyone has tried this and found any technical problems I haven't already addressed, now's the time to let me know, I'll be uploading this as soon as my saves are stored...

Some historical mistakes that I've noticed in teh scenario:

-Bulgaria, Romania, and Hungary were all also part of the Axis. But Romania isn't part of teh Axis, and Hungary and Bulgaria are part of Neutral Europe, which starts out at war with Germany.
-I think Egypt was a British colony at the time (Not sure, have to check)
-In WWII, Germany invaded Norway, but ignored Sweden. But in teh game, Norway and Sweden are one country, which makes invading one but not the other impossible.
Okay, that's all for now.

Egypt was definetly a British colony.

As for the noises, yes, it's been annoying me too. I'll get right on it.

Thanks for the responses!

And Omega: your points are very correct, so I can't argue. But I've set up the game to try and pit Axis-versus-Ally, and let the neutrals swing according to who influences them. Basicly, getting historic details largely correct and letting some minor details vary.

Hungary and Bulgaria didn't start as Axis powers, they were actually conquered. So was Romania, in large part, but there was enough sympathy in the Romanian regime that they basicly joined Hitler. Romania had more Iron Cross awards given than any other non-German country. (uh, not counting Austria, IMS...) That's why I made Romania its own country, and Hungary-Bulgaria ripe for conquest. In all my games, very soon they are in fact Axis...

Egypt achieved independance from England in 1936, and held a treaty to let England remain in the Suez.

Norway and Sweden is a complex issue. In the 20s, Sweden had institued the modern worlds first and most effective eugenics program, and Hitler read about it whiling away his time in jail during the putsch. He thought it was a good idea. Norway, however, wasn't strictly Axis; Quisling merely allowed the Germans to enter because England was making such a grandstand to take the Faroean islands. I've heard from Norwegians who were there, that he once said to Hitler, "please invade, before the English do..."

From my own experience, I've been to Trondeim as a kid (70s) and the German bunker there was so huge and so solid, that they couldn't get rid of it after the war (despite the best efforts to blow it up) so they just let it stand as a great, ugly naval hangar. But no one liked it, nor how it got there... The Norwegians were like many of the axis powers... Axis out of necessity.

Much like Finland. Axis for no reason than that Germany was at war with RUSSIA, its real enemy. My father's cousin fought in WWII as a Finn. You can't imagine the scene where my dad and he first brought up the subject. Much yelling, blustery fist-showing, then crying, hugging, and finally, whiskey. The only REAL Axis power was Germany-Austria-Czech Sudetenland. Everyone else got sucked in...

But thanks for your thoughts! I think I'll keep the country setup as is.

WINTER: it's the Nazi dream of rocket-propelled elite soldiers flying into combat, if the cockey idea of "Wonder Weapons" were ever to take root... In a game, there's allowances, ya know...

BTW: I've changed its name to "KSF Sturmsoldat" (forgot who suggested it, but thanks!)

on second thought, Italy was actually a true Axis power. Early years (before 39) Mussolini and Hitler were much closer than the later years, but that's because Mussolini wasn't as good a strategist as we Civ players can be!
