There are religious beliefs that produce amenities, which will impact loyalty.

I look forward to future entries in the civ franchise that use increasingly elaborate and confusing euphemisms so that we can pretend no one is getting hurt during warfare.

Perhaps they could take some inspiration from 90's anime dubs?

Not only that, but you can spread your religion beyond international borders. Having religion exert loyalty pressure at all would lead to odd situations where distant cities can (potentially, with a lot of religious unit spam) flip for no reason and then start exerting pressure of their own.
