From FIRAXIS: Possible Fixes for "Failed to Initialize Renderer" Startup Error

Friaxis needs to get a fix to the current drivers. (not sure it is always a good idea to update with the latest drivers)

Yeah, the problem is, the card manufacturers update their drivers so fast, it's hard to keep up.

Buy the game douchebag

Yes... well insulting someone really being helpful on a thread supposed to help. And I would but now checked, my computer can't run it.

But I'll let ya know, 'great first impression' my first post and you call me a name smooth:rolleyes:.

I've Civilization 3 so stick to that.

Just thought ya need to know, and hello to ya too. Are all people like ya on here?

I'm surprised you didn't receive an official warning. Piracy is seriously disallowed on this forum.

Look, I've got the Civ 3... leave it at that. It's bought, I just didn't have money, and well probably wasn't worth the bother? And how about super old games like Monkey Islands I'm talking about number 1. You can't really buy that anywhere now...

Okay, I've given up on it. Just wish someone would of said rather than insulting me. I is not to know what is what.

Okay, can't one of ya please see, that I didn't know the rules and it's not sold here full stop. Now for last thing, I was tempted to get it when I saw details here. Now look I've given up on it. My computer isn't good enough...

Now if I'd bought game... well would of been harder to remedy this, because I'd have to return it, and trust me, it's not easy to return games here and if I'd bought it online, would need to send and hope it isn't lost.

Now other than this misconduct, please just can't one person see this as a lesson to me. Don't lecture me, or act like I'm stupid or even insult, just nod your head and say he's learnt his lesson. Which I have.

One last thing, my last thing on last post about Monkey Islands, you never even commented on it. It was a valid point, not like ya can buy it everywhere. In this case it's not price it's availability. Heck not even sure if it's made anymore.

Okay I've laid down my case quite reasonably, even though insulted and belittled, I've not once made any personal attacks.

Please actually give an answer of more than a sentence or insult.

I've learnt my lesson and ya could say it was karma. Heh.

That's what the demo is for.

LucasArts still has the copyright for Monkey Island (and will for about another 70 years or so). When and how they decide to make it available is their choice.

I have a new laptop, a cheap one mind you, vista, built in graphics (don't laugh :P) Anyway, I've been playing Civ IV for a few days again now, was fine, then suddenly got the error. Now seeing as most of the "solutions" sucked about doing driver changes etc, mine is an intel chipset not ati etc, basically nothing worked, not even the patches, even the 1.75 "guaranteed to fix" the problem. Then it hit me, between the last time i played last night, and this morning, only one thing had changed... can you guess what it was? I'll put you out of your misery, it was a certain update from our buddies at microcrap!! Err soft... >_> *cough* anywho, it was the .net framework 1.1 (in this case, not sure if other versions would do this) well as I only needed that for one thing, that I never really wanted to use (was testing a program out was all) I removed it, and lo and behold... CIV WORKS!!

granted this may not help many, but it may help some, check if you have a .net framework installed, if you do, do you need it? Only you'd really know from your own programs etc, but should you find yourself not needing it, uninstall it!!! See if it fixes this, oh... and even if you do need it, could be worth an uninstall to check anyway right? Who knows, if that is the problem causer, perhaps a proper test could be done by Firaxis and a nice patch to alleviate could come out :)

Why are resurrecting this dinosaur of a thread? Hell, this one was started shortly after the game came out, let it rest in peace. As for .Net Framework, you do realize that it's now up to version 4? Instead of advising people to get rid of it, you probably just needed to upgrade it. It's used in alot more programs than you seem to think and it may not be a good idea to get rid of it.

Why? Because I had the problem, why else? And hmmm let me think, IT Technician for 8 years now with 3 degrees, do I know about upgrading and the usage of .net framework... look, if you don't like me offering a possible fix, no matter how old the thread, that's your perogative. But don't feel that gives you some right to attempt to troll/bash/flame like you're a god. I came accross the error today, and sorted it quickly, this particular thread came up in a google search done to help diagnose the problem, if the thread had no further use it could've been archived or deleted, the fact it's still here and people have the problem still goes to show that every little helps, no matter how late "in the day" it could be.

If you did then you'd also know that the very next time Windows update runs it'll install .Net right back.

And I don't have autoupdates running, and only custom download updates, it's easy to avoid. The main thing here is, people TRYING out this solution, because maybe, just maybe, the way Civ IV uses DirectX has a problem with .net framework. Simple thing people can try and check, no harm no foul as they can simply reinstall within minutes should it do nothing to alleviate their problem. On the flipside, should the above case be true, there is a conflict, perhaps then with that information of what causes the conflict, a patch can be brought out to deal with it.

Well the fact that you're the first person since 2005 that has reported having the problem kind of indicates that somewhere along the line the issue got fixed. Why it's happening only to you is a good question, but there was certainly no need to dig up this dead thread for it.

But don't feel that gives you some right to attempt to troll/bash/flame like you're a god.

Giving people bad advice gives me the right to speak out. .Net is used by quite a few programs, it's not just there for window dressing. Telling people to get rid of it could cause any number of their other programs to stop working. And since 99.9999999% of the players since 2005 have been using it successfully while playing the game makes it an unnecessary precaution.

I disagree. I guarantee that people are still hitting this error. For most, this thread likely gives enough information to fix the problem because this error does get caused by old/corupt drivers. I reported this error in another thread just the other day on Windows 7:

http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=337616

In my case it was a simple problem of Dell not having the windows 7 drivers posted so I had to go to Nvidia to get them. I didn't realize that dell's drivers and Nvidia's drivers were the same driver.

At any rate, the point of these threads is to share what works for people. And as in this case, if the advice is bad we can help them out.

If you did then you'd also know that the very next time Windows update runs it'll install .Net right back.

Nope. Windows update will not install .NET Framework 1.1 on Windows Vista which is the OS he indicated. It either gets installed via some piece of software, or via direct download from Microsoft.

As for .Net Framework, you do realize that it's now up to version 4? Instead of advising people to get rid of it, you probably just needed to upgrade it.

That won't help. If you look where the .NET Framework is installed, for me it is: C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework. You will see all of the versions of the .NET Framework living happily next to each other. If Civ is bound to .NET Framework 1.1 it won't use a newer version. (I'm not sure if Civ uses .NET Framework or not?)

However, despite all this, I do agree that uninstalling .NET Framework 1.1 without re-installing it right away is a bad idea. Windows Vista appears to not ship with 1.1 so that means if you had it installed then some other program is/was using it.

In this case, if .NET Framework 1.1 is truly causing these errors - then most likely your installation of .NET Framework was corrupted somehow. I have seen this happen before (different version of .NET Framework) and have simply uninstalled/reinstalled the .NET Framework to fix the issues.

The approrpriate thing to do in this case is to uninstall .NET Framework 1.1 and reinstall it.

Now seeing as most of the "solutions" sucked about doing driver changes etc, mine is an intel chipset not ati etc,

I was just thinking about this one. You do realize that it is possible to upgrade the drivers for an Intel video don't you? You're not just stuck with the ones that come with the machine. This problem has more to do with bad drivers than it does with .Net.
