FS2- The Soviet Union

JoE, hope you are well and welcome back to the game...

Sorry guys. I'm going to have to drop from this game. Just don't have the time to play Civ anymore, the schedule's just too busy. I'll still lurk around, and hopefully I can join you in another SG some time in the summer.

JOE's comment: A load of Knights have started coming into our lands. I'm sending a few troops to meet them before they pillage too much.
JOE's comment: They've come from Texcoco, so it's defences are significantly weaker, however there are a fair number of Cat's there so I'm splitting the SoD nearby to prevent colatoral damage.
Cossack defeats (16.02/18): Aztec Knight
Cossack defeats (18.00/18): Aztec Knight

JOE's comment: Not the best dice rolls in the fighting there. Texcoco's defenses have built back up so I'm holding off until we have more troops nearby.
JOE's comment: In retrospect, it was really stupid of me to start attacking Texcoco without sifficient forces. DUMBASS!
Cannon promoted: Barrage I

JOE's comment: There's a reasonable SoD on Monty's borders (our SoD), and most cities are building forces, and there's forces travelling towards our SoD, so we should be ready for a push into his land in a couple of turns.
JOE's comment: Much more rail has been laid.
JOE's comment: There are a couple of workers working the southern lands which are a bit barren at the moment.
JOE's comment: Physics in 4.
JOE's comment: I would suggest waiting until Physics come in, take our research to 0% for a couple of turns, then using the resulting money to upgrade Cannons to Artillery.

There are plenty of comments throughout the turnlog. Wasn't the best of turns, attacked way too early and lost a fair number of Cossacks. The good news however is that there is now a reasonable SoD on the northern edge of Monty's border with plenty of reinforcements on the way and being built. Some citites are building happiness buildings to combat unhappiness, and railway account for about 70% of our travel infrastructure, so we're well poised to start a proper slapping of Monty in the next couple of turns. Beware that he's build a fair number of Cat's and his Rifle's are mopping up damaged units, so don't send in one great big SoD, split them up and attack the city from different angles (I didn't initially and got beat down for it. He has no units in or near our territory at the moment, but his Knights sure move fast, although they are not a threat to our units. I suggest we take him down ASAP before he gets the relevant tech to upgrade his units...he should be stuck with what he's got for a while, whereas we've got Artillery in the not too distant future. We're also running all the correct civis for the variant, and have built the Kremlin in Moscow.

Save Game!

ok, got it and will play this weekend

Pre-Turn
we're researching physics when this is tradeable?
now that just puzzles me, the pleased Theodore will trade with us, why didn't we do that earlier?
get physics and divine rights for 2 techs
set research on artillery since electricity is know by 2 civs
Cyrus has that actually, so I switch off research for a turn to check whether we can get that tech

our so called attack force is non existent so to speak of, we should go for peace
there is no point fighting with no units, make peace and get some cash and 12got for that

worker actions are puzzling me, we are building windmills at Tlexcala when we have biology and food shouldn't be an issue, the horses next to meanwhile aren't improved
Catherinegrad has plenty of food, yet the hils are all windmilled, for what???
Macao on the other hand is short of food and we are building a workshop on plains?
we have not even hooked up oil or uranium for some decent navy

in my mind we gain nothing from fighting Monte, we should either go for Mao or the Greeks

1. 1902AD
trying to send some of the few workers we have north to get so farms running there so that our cities can grow
we also need to hook up oil

get electricity from Cyrus
since nobody wants to trade artillery to us, start research at 80% which will give artillery in 6

2. 1904AD
we have a Great Artist, keep him, maybe we get another person and can start a GA

3. 1906AD
worker actions

4. 1908AD
slowly assemble our army in Moscow and Leningrad

5. 1910AD
incense is hooked up for an additional happy face
we have 2 turns to go on artillery and suddenly they all would trade it with us, no I keep the research

6. 1912AD
oil is hooked up and Hatty declares on Monte, maybe that will deplete his forces and we might actually go after him

7. 1914AD
we get artillery, next is flight since industrilaism is known already
switch off research so we can upgrade a few cannons, before we fight again

IT Rome loses another axe, but chariot bypasses city as usual, we ned more spears here

8. 1916AD
discover that we already have a Great Artist, will use our northern artist for a culture bomb

9. 1918AD
switch research back on, we should have sufficient units to steamroll Monte now
Mao is culture bombing us as Shandong will soon revolt

10. 1920AD
Catherinegrad gets Globe Theatre, entertainment for the masses
we are ready to fight Monte with a real force

we can declare next turn when the deal expires, we better do that as hatty is starting to take Monte's cities

'Got it!' ... and will play this weekend.

Anyway I recognized that you now see that it's worth fighting Monte. We just lacked the troups. Actually our benefit lies in the backwardness of Monte. Easy conquest... Hopefully we can gain any actually nice city from him. I'll do my very best.

Is there anything we can do about Shandong? Maybe we can exploit it somehow before it revolts. Any ideas?

After Monte we finally should deal with Alex, Mao then. Mao bothers me a little bit. He will backstab us again if possible. I wonder Alex didn't (First time in my games, it seams). He must be really weak ;)

Our Save at 1930 AD

1921 (01)
We declare war to Montezuma and move troops to Xochicalco to capture it before Egypt. Some temples have been built to increase happiness.

1923 (03)

ATTACK
Civ4ScreenShot0004.jpg

We capture Xochicalco, suiciding an Artillery after wasting an Infantry :(. Though we loose 3 additional Infantrists. Had some bad luck with it.

1924 (04)
Culturally bomb Xochicalco to prevent a possible flip to Egypt or America. Whip a Theatre. Advancing towards Texcoco.

1925 (05)
Whip a Library in Xochicalco.

ATTACK
Civ4ScreenShot0007.jpg

We capture Texcoco loosing nothing but one Artillery. Next should be Tenochtitlan but this journey will last longer. Egypt is also advancing very fast due to their Tanks.

1926 (06)
Hatty offered Silver for Incense. We accepted, we need it for our war. Oxford University comes in.

1928 (08)
A temple has been whipped in Xochicalco. Meanwhile our destroyers bombed Tenochtitlan down from 85 to 0%.

1929 (09)
The Forbidden Palace is built in Stalingrad. We're ready to attack Tenochtitlan. But the enemy is strong (some city Riflemen). As there are 9 units in Tenochtitlan and Egypt has max. 7 attacks left.

1930 (10)
Civ4ScreenShot00151.JPG

Discovered Flight and traded it to Roosevelt for Democracy. As it is too cheap we cannot have any other tech for it though. I selected Fission next as no one else has it yet.

In Chengdu a Chinese revolt takes place. I moved some units there to prevent the worst. For more culture I tried to built Mt. Rushmore there but it did not finish yet. Maybe some Cathedral next here if we manage to keep the city.

ATTACK
Civ4ScreenShot0012.jpg

We capture Tenochtitlan without any loss. :hammer: Thanks for Egypt efforts who wasted some of their tanks to those city Riflemen. Calixtlahuaca should be our next target. For this, we've got enough toys. After this, redistribute troops to quickly conquer Greece in the north and the south. Greece should be backwards enough for this.

Civ4ScreenShot00162.JPG

You may recognize that Egypt did their part as well. But we should get the rest. Egypt is incredibly powerful... You may recognize the railroads down to Tenochtitlan as well. THIS is very important: Our troops are slow. Reinforcements are sent best via rail. Now that we researched flight, airports might be an option as well.

Civ4ScreenShot0024.JPG

We're tooooo weak and we're far away from our goal.

Civ4ScreenShot0025.JPG

We should go for modern armors when we finished off Alex and then deal with the rest. At least with rosevelt.

Just some writing on military and next moves:

It has turned out that city artillery is the most efficient opener in attacks against somehow weaker opponents (against city rifles). City (maybe city/barrage or city*2/barrage) promoted artillery is very efficient. It has better chances to win then infantry and even if it looses it inflicts severe damage on defenders. So always start with artillery. It may be more expensive but well promoted they can do the most with infantry only cleaning up.

Hope we got tanks soon though. A pity that they all are having industrialism and wont trade it...

Be sure to whip cultural buildings in Tenochtitlan and Texcoco when they come out of resistance. First, it is better to make use of their population instead of letting it starve down. Second we don't want to loose territory against Egypts new Aztec cities.
