FS2- The Soviet Union

Nice set of turns, ThERat.

At the very moment Corinth is looking very likely to flip rather sooner. We'll see.

I have a suggestion: Use more slavery :whipped: instead of turning on avoid growth. At least in cities with a lot of food.

so far we have not used the avoid growth. Now with additional happy resources coming in, we have no issue with happiness at all. I rather not whip too much so that cities can grow and prosper sooner.

well maybe except our eastern city that is really shield poor and food rich

The early calendar really helps a lot. Slavery is really powerful for production-poor cities. As is building workers and settlers :hammer:

Got it, but won't be able to play until later tonight (EST).

Any suggestions on how to proceed would be appreciated.

  • Settle at the suggested spot
  • Build another settler
  • Connect our cities with roads (urgent)
  • Build another one or two workers
  • Research Code of Laws
  • Do some great trades for us
  • Build more military (and fortify them near Greece)
  • Don't open borders until Theocracy
  • Capture Washington
  • Make us the greatest empire on earth :hammer:

Did I forget something? ;)

Yours,
Pvblivs

Pre-Turn:

Look over our glorious empire. Or something like that.

Realize that Mao and Alex both have religion and we have open borders with them. Can't let that nonsense spread to our people so I close borders with both of them.

Turn 1: 125 AD

Settler comes in at Leningrad. I send him and an archer to settle in the east.

Do some troop movement.

Turn 2: 150AD

Archer built in Leningrad.

Start on wall.

Turn 3: 175AD

ZzzzzZzzzzz

Turn 4: 200 AD

MW comes in and I pick CoL (11 turns)

ZzzzZzzzzz

Turn 5: 225 AD

ZzzzzZzzzzz

Turn 6: 250AD

Ax beats barb archer near Moscow.

Turn 7: 275 AD

Cathrinagrad builds work boat. Rax next.

Workers now working good stuff.

Turn 8: 300 AD

We meet Hatty. I make peace.

Ax beats barb warrior.

Turn 9: 325AD

ZzzzZzzz

Turn 10: 350 AD

Setler/Archer combo makes it to the east, but not in time for me to found.

All of our workers are working or close to resources that aren't hooked up.

Pretty sleepy set of turns. Alex is none too pleased with us so we're going to be fighting with him one way or another.

And now some screens of our empire as it stands:

I knew I forgot something....

The great nation of USSR is now ruled by Pvblivs.

At first I try to get an impression on how we're doing. All in all, we're fine, but could do better. We're only medium and we've got some problems to keep up with our friend Mao. I will try my best to change it.

I am thinking about some new cities down to the south: Dyes, and gems, stone and cows are waiting for us there in masses. Important to keep our people happy and maybe to build a wonder (or two).

My first decision is to scout out a barbarian city we discovered to the south.

Then I detect:

Civ4ScreenShot0003.jpg
A barbarian axe

Turn 1 (375 AD)

Moscow and Leningrad both build their long-awaited Workers and both start on settlers (and both will be supported by a forest-on-a-river chop).
We found the distant city of Vladivostok and start on a lighthouse, otherwise it won't grow. Wouldn't there be the gold I would never have agreed in such a city site. But I take the gold and settle in place.

To protect our workers from a possible loss against the axeman I take the unhappiness risk in Moscow and move the archer on the same tile (protecting the workers)

Civ4ScreenShot0004.jpg

Between turns

Our swordsman defeats the Barbarian axeman. :hammer:

Turn 2 (400 AD)

Catherinagrad builds barracks, starts on another worker. This should be our last worker. But we need it here because Catherinagrad grows very unhappy und unhealthy without a connection to our trade network, we need to build roads.
Novgorod builds granary, starts on a swordsman.
I decide to whip the galley in Furgalloregrad in order to build a courthouse rather sooner than later (14 turns for completion sounded too weird when I could have it in one turn.)

Between turns

Roosevelt asks for open borders. As he is a buddhist we can't take the risk to seduce our citizens and decline.

Turn 3 (425 AD)

We discover Code of Laws!
Furgalloregrad builds a galley, starts on a courthouse that should be whipped as soon as possible.
We trade metal casting for monotheism and monarchy to Mao. From America we could have 80 gold extra. But since we know whom we want to befriend we support our chinese neibours rather than our future foes. As we have enough silk we gift a load to Mao in order to improve our relationship.

Ummmh ... I realize now it wasn't a very smart decision to trade with Mao as he already has very expensive technologies and we now granted him another one. Though he hasn't researched alphabet yet and he can only trade it with Hatty.
We go for Literature as no one else researched it yet and we could go for Music if we want to afterwards.

Turn 4 (450 AD)

The Sovjets have a great feast as the years go by. [party]

Turn 5 (475 AD)

I decide to summon some troups to the Barbarian city of Gaul.
Civ4ScreenShot0005.jpg

Turn 6 (500 AD)

Moscow builds settler, starts on archer.
Leningrad builds settler, starts on courthouse.

Turn 7 (520 AD)

We discover Literature, Currency will be next. Now more people seem to have Literature and I don't want to race for Music for nothing. Currency will give us a nice boost for our economy (+1 trade routes) and we can build markets if needed.
Catherinagrad builds worker, starts a courthouse.
Novgorod builds swordsman, barracks are built next.
Moscow builds archer, starts swordsman
I trade silk for clams to Frederick.
Mao is still cautious with us so I give him rice. Feel free to cancel it at any time but I think if we want to make him an ally we should support this a little bit.

Turn 8 (540 AD)

Mansa Musa talks to us again. We give him Metal Casting and receive Construction. Catapults can start coming in now!!!

Between turns

Mansa offers Horseback Riding for Alphabet  Of course I decline. This guy never can get enough. He's the weakest all over the planet but again he seems to be the one nice guy with the tech lead :)

Turn 9 (560 AD)

Nothing to report from the Sovjets. :coffee:

Wait ... one thing. We're approaching Gaul!
Civ4ScreenShot0006.jpg

Turn 10 (580) AD)

Target destroyed!

After my turnset

Civ4ScreenShot0009.jpg
We're No1 in commerce and land. We're just about to expand like :crazyeye: so all stats will grow up. I believe! :)

Civ4ScreenShot0013.jpg
The world as we know it...

For my successor I left two settlers, the first one should settle where he is.

Civ4ScreenShot0014.jpg
It's not a perfect site for a settlement but we can grab stone, cows and wheat. 2 resources we lack yet.

Civ4ScreenShot0015.jpg
The second settler can head for the south to settle at a nice wealthy spot grabbing a lot of dyes and gems. Here:
Civ4ScreenShot0016.jpg

Another one or two settlers should be built asap to expand our glorious empire. We should be the greatest and I think we can achieve that. :hammer:

Can't we? ;)

I forgot, Farae. Don't know how to say it in English. I hope you feel better soon!

[0] 580AD - Taking stock of the nation. I rearrange some of the worked tiles in cities, because I think we need to mostly concentrate on growth and production. Commerce is for capitalist pig-dogs.

Next, I check out the civics. Places like Moscow and Catherinagrad are practically at their happy limit. It seems it would be good to have Hereditary rule come in, especially since we probably should start beefing up our military pretty soon, in preparation of a war with someone. :)

Next, I check in with our foreign advisor. It looks like we can get Gold from Mao. We do so in exchange for our only source of bananas (but that's ok, since most of our cities are well above the healthy limit - the only ones that aren't are those that aren't connected to the trade network). I also notice we are just giving our resources to Mao for nothing. Hmmm, we like our comrades, sure, but not to that extent. :) Nothing I can do about it now, but rest assured, as soon as I can cancel those deals, I will.

Also, I think we need a whole lot more workers. :) But any way, we'll see if I can get to that.

[1] 600AD - Hmmm, I don't really agree with the positioning at the stone proposed by Pvblivus... I think we should move the settler one tile SE. Sure, it loses the wheat then, but we can found another city to take advantage of the wheat, while this city will gain the coastal bonus, allowing it to build the lighthouse and harbor, which I think would benefit us more in the long run... So yeah, I move the settler one tile SW to found the city next turn.

[2] 620AD - We meet Montezuma, the founder of Judaism. He is just below us in score, and he is also quite a backwards dude in terms of technology.

Moscow grows and builds a sword. It needs a Granary ASAP, so starts on that.

Stalingrad is founded by the cows and stone, and starts work on a Library.

[4] 660AD - Monty asks for Open Borders. Him being the founder of Judaism, we can't allow that.

[5] 680AD - Vladikavkaz founded by the dies and gems in the south. Starts work on a library.

[6] 700AD - Moscow builds its Granary, and starts work on a Worker, because we really need some more of those. :)

[7] 720AD - We get Currency. Work starts on Feudalism.

Novgorod constructs a Barracks. To that end, I'll let it work on an Axe for one turn, then it will grow and I'll have it build a worker.

The borders of Stalingrad expand and I realize I must be :smoke:ing. I was building the Library there for its borders to expand, entirely forgetting the simple fact that we are creative. Meh... City starts on a Granary instead.

[8] 740AD - Moscow builds a worker. Starts on a Settler.

[10] 780AD - The Soviet Union now holds a Million Souls! Also, a barb sword is spotted near Vladikavkaz.

[11] 800AD - Just wanted to play one more turns, so the numbers come out nice and round. :)

After-Turn Thoughts

1. I have marked a site for another city, to take advantage of the wheat I lost with my placement of Stalingrad. (It is basically one tile north of the central of the three peaks west of the Wheat, in case the label does not carry over.)

2. I am trading away our only source of Spices to Hatty for some money (also, I am now getting money from Mao for the Silk he used to get for free from us). Note, however, that the borders of Novgorod have expanded, and we can now get a second spices with the worker that will be built there soon.

3. We generally have a stronger country now, than before, I believe. We have moved up in the ranks a little bit, and there is still room to grow.

4. We can probably start massing troops for an attack on Greece. (Note, BTW, that the Greeks have founded a city south of Stalingrad.)

5. There's a lot of chopping that needs to be done at Vladikavkaz! Pretty much every tile there is jungle.

EDIT: Sorry, didn't have time to post pictures. :( If someone can do it, it'd be awesome.
