I wish it were that easy... A much better route would be (starting from the tile 3W, 1 S)
NE -> SE -> NE (3 moves, all on railroads)
The route they chose instead was
NE -> NE -> NE -> E -> E -> SW
Hell... even NE -> NE -> SE would be OK...

NE -> NE -> SE may actually be more efficient in real life than NE -> SE -> NE because it is going straight for two turns and then taking a right turn on the 3rd, where NE -> SE -> NE requires a right turn and a left turn.
