gaia vs. archepeligo

IIRC, earlier versions than Civ 2 had an option of a world of Gaia (all land or arche- peligo (all islands. Is that possible in 2?(I 'm a landlubber)

You could use the map option in custom game to make it an archipelago, and for all land, you could make a custom map in map editor of all land.
