Game of the Year

Wait, EU II was 2001? Wow, missed it completely on wiki. Well, then, sorry Rogue Leader, but you've just been relegated to distant second.

Changing vote to Europa Universalis II

I think civ3 is tied with eu with 2 votes apiece lol. I'll tally later, quite busy today.

As far as I can see, absent a vote on your part, the votes are in a seven-way tie at one vote each between Halo, Arcanum, Unreal Tournament, SSB: Melee, Civ III, Black and White and Europa Universalis II

The only game that ever had more than one vote was Rogue Leader, but it lost both to vote switching (me to EU II and Ailedhoo to Melee)

So are we on 2002 now? IMO this era is the doldrums of PC gaming. Consoles were firmly in charge and the PC was a quiet platform relatively speaking. However, the internet was beginning to explode, which would bring back PC gaming with a vengence. Anyway, thats not to say that there were no games of note in 2002. Notable mentions are for me:

Medal of Honor Allied assault
Morrowind
Grand thef auto III
Age of mythology

But each of these 4 would rank pretty low on my all time list in all truthfullness. It is made up though by my winner by a considerable distance:

Vote - Warcraft 3 Reign of Chaos

A superb game! And the one that cemented Blizzard entertainment into the forefront of premier PC gaming. Also popularised the warcraft franchise for "modern" tastes, which ultimately would lead to World of Warcraft. A hands down winner IMO.

2002 has to be Morrowind for me, no questions asked. It's quite literally one of my top three all-time favourite games.

After much considerate deliberation and debate, I have determined that my GotY for 2002 is:

Spoiler :
MORROWIND

By a mile.

Actually, I didn't even look at the list first. :p

On another note, I'd say the Omaha Beach mission from MoH:AA is a sort of "Gaming Moment of the Year" for it's influence on the overall gaming industry, pretty much the spawn of the yearly AAA cinematic single-player focused Hollywood war FPS right there.

This scene was so amazing to me back then.

I don't th ink we're on 2002 yet - nobody won for 2001 :-p

We have a whopping 7 best games of 2001 according to CFC, clearly the best ever year in gaming then! ;)

Could use some lurkers to come in and break the tie for 2001, in the meantime we can talk about how great morrowind is. :p

(really though, would be nice to get some more votes on 2001 before moving on, we just seemed to be moving on pretty quickly for the other years as well)

For 2001, I vote for Civ III. To be fair, I have never played any of the other games vying for the GOTY laurels so take my vote as somewhat biased (we are on a CIV forum!)

Yea, that scene in MoH was epic. It came out after saving private ryan and totally nailed it.

I was subsequently shocked when i went to university to discover that the US military gave significant funding to medal honor. They do with other military games and films as well.

I think last time we waited a week and then did another year the following week. But im easy either way ;)

I'm all for nattering about Morrowind. I could probably do that until the cows come home. :)

If we're moving to 2002, these are some prominent games that came out:

The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind
Resident Evil Remake
Medal of Honor: Frontline
Neverwinter Nights
MLB Slugfest 20-03
Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos
Medieval: Total War
Super Monkey Ball 2
Super Mario Sunshine
SOCOM: US Navy Seals
Turok: Evolution
Battlefield 1942
Animal Crossing
Kingdom Hearts
Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus
Grande Theft Auto: Vice City
Age of Mythology
Ratchet & Clank
Metroid Prime
Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon
Dragon Ball Z: Budokai
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (Japan release)

Some reeeeaally good games there. I don't know how we want to define release locations, because if it's by US release then Wind Waker is a 2003 game and not a 2002 one. This is a tough list to choose from regardless and I'm gong to have to think about this one.

Civ3 is the winner, everything else had one vote. People changing their votes mid stream is messing up my counting! But I think I got me, mitchum and Kyriakos for civ3. I'll update main page.

For 2002 I didn't play morrowind but I hated oblivion and skyrim was meh. So it's not getting any votes from me. I did enjoy age of mythology but warcraft 3 is one of the best rts games out there, and from it spawned my favorite current game, and probably my second most played game ever behind world of warcraft- dota 2! So it's warcraft 3 without a doubt. I also don't think we get to world of warcraft without the heavy influence of wc3 either. They were most likely being developed simultaneously but the heroes in wc3 led to like mini roleplaying ala diablo, which seemed like the foundation for a lot of the stuff in wow. So really wc3 is responsible for my top two most played games ever and probably somewhere in the realm of 10,000 hours of my life. Thanks blizzard!

(which 10,000 hours sounds insane, but a conservative estimate of my average wow week was probably 25 hours a week for 7 years... and I've got 2k hours of dota under my belt since 2012 tracked on steam)

CivIII :trophy:

:)

As for 2002, Age of Mythology was a... classic game

But i will vote for:

10,000 hours???????

I've barely played any of those games. Really, the only game I've played from the 2002 vintage appear to be Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire (and I will NOT vote for those. Gen III was the low point of the series).

Still, based on what I've heard of them, and how much I've enjoyed the series they're part of, I'll vote for Morrowind (edging out Neverwinter Nights)
