With each new year, we also get a new version of The Game Awards.
This year there will be awards given in 30 categories, and Civ7 has been nominated in the category "Best Sim/Strategy".
The nominees are the following:
  • 🏆
    The Alters
  • 🏆
FINAL FANTASY TACTICS - The Ivalice Chronicles
  • 🏆
    Jurassic World Evolution 3
  • 🏆
    Sid Meier’s Civilization VII
  • 🏆
    Tempest Rising
  • 🏆
    Two Point Museum
If you want to vote for Civ7, then please do that here https://www.thegameawards.com/nominees/best-sim-strategy .

I played three of these. Alters, JWE3 and Civ7.

I played Civ7 the most.

JWE3 is good in graphics but gameplay is very much like JWE2. Very replayable in sandbox.

Alters is good too (from the makers of Frostpunk) but I havent finished yet. I mostly play it in SteamDeck.

TwoPoint Museum is a great game as well. But I still think that the first of the series, TwoPoint Hospital, is still better. I‘d be happy to see Museum win though, as I consider it near perfect when it comes to content, updates, and pricing. And I think anyone that likes builders/management and games on the humorous side should check it out.

My personal strategy game of the year is Anno 117 though, but I guess that came out too late to be considered. Civ 7 would make 2nd place for me.

Two Point Hospital is quirky and fun. Does Two Point Museum have the same feel?

In Reddit people are asking why EU5 is not nominated as well. I think that and Anno did not meet the cutoff date.

Game Awards always been a bad joke for players. And this time its no different. No EU5 as an option?
Corrupt western media is in such a sorry state.

Their site states "Games eligible for The Game Awards this year must be available for public consumption on or before Friday, November 21, 2025 at 9pm PT."

This means:
  1. EU5 should be eligible
  2. It still could be added to the list of nominees

Out of that list and in its current state I pick Civ 7. Ivalice is likely a better game but it is still a remake. Cloudflare disagrees though by being down right now .

I'd find it tough to vote for Civ7 right now... It has tonnes of potential but it just isn't worthy of an award yet. However, the list it's up against is bafflingly uninspiring too. I'd second that EU5 in particular not being in there is bizarre?

It has the same feel overall. But there is generally less urgency, and the game feels looser because of that. You still need to things done in time, but you don't have these bottlenecks that can ruin your museum in Museum, which were very present in Hospital, especially the DLCs. But the humor and overall feel of the game are the same. And it's a far larger and more diverse game than hospital. Archeology museums play quite different from Supernatural museums or Aquariums – but you can of course mix and match between all different types (and are encouraged to do so to e.g., find and display supernatural underwater beings or archeological relics from space).

As for EU5, if the requirement is to be a strategy game, I can – at least tongue in cheekily – understand why it might not qualify as that :D

The Category does say "Best Sim/Strategy Game" so I would say it qualifies under the Simulation part. :)

If any game in that category this year should one-shot it... It's EU5. I'm not used to games being a masterpiece at launch... So it was nice to see some faith restored. Civ7 will be worth an award in time, but it's not there yet, not even close. However, it's probably the best on that very odd list.

Again, if The Alters qualifies, then its a very loose definition of sims/strategy

Civ 7 shouldnt get an award, i think games that are launched incomplete shouldbt be rewarded
