Game of the Year

10,000 hours???????

That's over like a 10 year period, it's not that much per day if you break it down.

I was in college from 2002-2006. Wow came out end of 2004. I played it until after cataclysm, summer 2011. That's like 6 1/2 years. During my heyday I'd easily play 16 hours in a weekend and 4-5 a night weeknights. Heck raids usually started at 7pm and went to midnight or 1am. That's why I said a conservatively 25 hours a week. 25 * 50 * 6.5 = 8125 hours. I was a wow addict, but same time, in college you have a ton of free time, I went to a small school so there were no big parties to go to. After I lived alone a few years before I met my wife, I'd go out on like friday nights with friends or whatever, but saturday and sunday I'd just wow it up. I worked 9-5 but would still raid 3-4 weeknights. Seems kinda crazy when I look back on it but statistically american's watch like 5 hours of tv a day. I played dota instead. It didn't seem that weird at the time.

Dota2 on steam right now says 1967 hours. I play it was less than world of warcraft though, my first dota 2 match was 12-9-2012, so on average I play like 1.6 hours a day. Doesn't seem that crazy, it's typically the only game I play in a week, I'll do 2-3 hours once or twice a week right now.

I'll offer to fight anyone who says that Morrowind wasn't objectively one of the most influential games to come out that year. ("Best" is clearly subjective.) :)

It was...

but:
Sly Cooper
Metroid Prime
Super Mario Sunshine
Battlefield 1942
Animal Crossing
Warcraft III
Kingdom Hearts
Ratchet and Clank

have been just as if not more influential and ground breaking. It's a tough year mang. And I'mma straight up ignore that Wind Waker came out in Japan in 2002 because that would turn a tough choice into an excruciating one.

I have never even heard of sly cooper, but if you say so. There's a rachet and clank movie coming out this year I believe.

You should fix that. The game is a masterpiece. Also the example I point to when trying to explain game feel to a person. Well, that and Halo.

I've never heard of Sly Cooper either, but I think everyone knows what I was doing at the time. :)

Is your vote for morrowind then? Going to tally them soon.

I'll take Sly Cooper.

If there's anything to take away from this thread it's that 2002 was a stupidly good year for games. Also I miss old school 3D platformers :(. Also I never heard a ruling on the Wind Waker question. It has some wider implications, such as what to do about PC releases for console games (or vice versa) or remakes/remasters.

Hmm... I just looked this game up on Wikipedia and it shows this as a PlayStation game. Was this game also available on the PC? If not, is it allowed in this competition?

We're deciding best game across all platforms, so yes.

Well, if 'Sly' is anything like that of a notable film star, it's short for the Latin name Sylvester.

So we are in 2002 and people are voting for other games which are NOT Morrowind? It's a Scandal! It's a Outrage! :gripe:

Hey, you all voted for not-EU-2 in 2001, so that makes the lot of you foolish heretics as far as I'm concerned.

My first introduction to Paradox games was EU: Rome. :p

Wasn't even #2 in my assessment. It was between Sly Cooper, Animal Crossing, and Metroid Prime

...And Slugfest :3

If we're voting on 2002 I'm going to have to give it to Battlefield 1942

So a new week means on to 2003 i guess. A complete poverty of titles in 2003 IMO. Out of the list i have only owned 2 of them - Max Payne 2 and Call of Duty. And surprisingly, I am going to vote for Call of Duty.

Love it or loathe it, it is a highly influential series. And it all began here. And I actually think the first game was entirely decent. It was only later when they released one every year with minor changes, and the moronic console horde bought it every year regardless of how good it was, that i started to have a problem with it.

But yea, 2003 isnt a good year IMO. Definitely one of the worst.

Really? Just from Wikipedia's list alone, I remember D&D Heroes, Soul Calibur II and of course Knights of the Old Republic. I'm still tempted to play KotOR today, so that's my pick for this year.
