Game of the Year

2004 already? Good year but its GTA:SA for me without any doubt.

Well I didn't give much time for 2003 but it's kind of a dull year. So making the executive decision to call KOTOR the winner and move on! It was only title that got more than one vote.

I'm done with this thread.

how are we finishing votes in a day? I thought it was a week long thing.

I think someone voted for CoD? That's also my vote. Recount!

2004: Rome: Total War

if you want to keep voting by all means but traffic seems slow I thought everyone who wanted to be heard was.

You just described a year that saw the release of Wind Waker, Call of Duty, Splinter Cell,, KOTOR, SC4, Prince of Persia, Viewtiful Joe, and Rise of Nations as "dull". 3 of those games would be on my top-10 all time. I'm sorry but it's impossible to take this thread seriously in light of that.

Wow someone's feelings got hurt that I haven't played any of the titles he listed oh noes.

If you really want to list why wind waker is so good by all means go for it, you've had ample opportunity. Why is it better than OOT or is it?

I like sc4, I don't love it, but only game I played on that list. It gets the job done for a city building, but still the mechanics of it seem a little off. Like to incite commercial buildings you build transportation? It just kind of lends itself to building the most efficient cities in little pods instead of what actually is fun and looks cool to build. And also I tire of open ended games eventually. I mean you try to break 100k people, then you shoot for a million I guess, then what?

Viewtiful joe never even heard of til listed but honestly it looks like an overrated side scroller, a game everyone goes ape about cus it does something different and has very appealing visuals... like... Trine! That game gets so much praise, I think it's boring.

I don't think anyone is taking this thread that seriously, it got necro'd semi randomly and away we go. So get off your high horse or go, no one cares.

Well, it looks far poorer than the recent years we examined. RoN was a massively selling game, but in essence its engine is weaker than Age of Mythology's (released before it) and it mostly is an Age of Empires with ability to have a few different camera angles. It is a pretty grey real time strategy, and not near the best in any rts category. The strategic campaign game is Risk (meant as something bad, obviously) ;)
I did mention RoN, and wouldn't care if my vote is counted for it or for nothing at all in that year...

Well kotor has most votes and I don't see any other votes popping up to change that.

So how about fable? I have played the lost chapters version. Not sure how much different it is than original fable. This game to me was one of the closest feelings to ocarina of time I had in a while. However there were a couple things I hated about it.

One using magic aged you a LOT. So you couldn't really make your guy look the way you wanted cus most of the magic was op. Even if you were a fighter there were spells to enhance your attacks.

I also found a bug to get as much gold as you want. The merchants all purchase or sell stuff based on how much they have in their stock. If they have say 5 gems they'll pay a lot for gems. If they have 100, they won't pay much at all. The trick was once you had enough money to buy out a merchant's entire stock you could sell them all back for more than you paid. And then you just rinsed and repeated, infinite money (until they ran out of gold, I can't remember if their gold was finite). At least on TLC for pc this happened. And then the best sword available was one that you bought, so I kept finding new treasure that I didn't need. It really trivialized the game, and if I did another play through I probably wouldn't do this.

It's hard to rate Wow cus so much of your experience with it depending on the players around you. If you had friends who played or a good guild it was awesome. If not, maybe not so much. That's eventually why I quit, all my friends did and I was doing single player essentially, trying to do pick up groups for raids and pvp and it sucked.

But still whatever Wow did with loot and questing just completely drew you in at first. You just had to keep playing and get more. It was epic. I'm not sure why no one has really duplicated the formula since, not even blizzard with diablo 3 could do it. The risk, reward cycle in wow was just perfect those first couple expansions.

I'm done with this thread unless you do a recount!! Pirates has 2 votes already and several closet Pirate lovers just waiting for their chance to chime in! :mischief:

Would be funny if Pirates beat KOTOR or WoW though.

Not too sure whether we are starting another year yet. But seems as though i missed the meeting for 2004. My vote goes to half Life 2. It is probably my favourite game of all time, so its no contest really.

If we are starting 2005 then that is an easy decision for me, and i suspect for many others here. Civ IV is the hands down winner. IMO it is best Civ ever released. Even though it was a buggy mess upon release.

KotOR II came out on PC, Jade Empire came out on Xbox and damn it, Civilisation IV came out in 2005 too, which is a crying shame, because Jade Empire has an awesome story with one of the best penultimate-act twists ever.

Yep. Civ IV, as the high point (so far) of a series that's pretty good to begin with, is an easy winner for 2005.

Civ4 is still one of my least enjoyed games. SWAT 4 is probably my favourite game from 2005... right behind KotOR II. I didn't really play Battlefield 2 or Battlefront 2 until much later, sadly, though both were great for their time.

I should try getting Jade Empire to work again. Still have not played it.

It certainly doesn't get any easier from this point on. :(

Can I cheat and say Jade Empire for my 2005 game, but namecheck Civ IV with the Warlords expansion in 2006? Beyond the Sword comes in 2007, but then it becomes ridiculously hard to choose!
