Gamespy is shutting down!

So no more Pitboss for Steam users, only CD users. That's nonsense.

Yes and since Steam users can't use Direct IP, I'm not sure yet if a CD player can join a Steam game via a steam chat room, by just adding Civ4 as a non-steam game to there games list, without getting a steam key from 2K. Nothing like dividing an already small MP community :-/

I have made a post in the official 2K forums about the removal of Direct IP from Steam versions of the game. Here it is:

http://forums.2k.com/showthread.php?563191-Steam-multiplayer-update-and-Civilization-IV-Pitboss

To everyone who plays in Direct IP games: Please take a minute to register an account, and make a short post in the thread linked above.

I suggest to write in your short message:

- Your username and which civ fansite(s) you hail from.
- Which version of the game you purchased (CD or Steam).
- Mention how this issue affects all players, because even CD users can't continue Direct IP games with Steam users. The removal of Direct IP from Steam divides an already small multiplayer community down the middle.
- End with a strong request that Direct IP be re-integrated into the Steam version of Civ4.

Feel free to use your own words. Be firm, but civil - profanity won't help the cause.

For example, in my case:

I am Lord Parkin from Civfanatics and Realms Beyond. I purchased the CD version of Civ4. I am deeply disappointed with the removal of Direct IP from Steam versions, because all of my friends with the Steam version can no longer play in our Pitboss games together. This issue has needlessly divided our community. Please re-integrate Direct IP into the Steam version of the Civ4.

Please register an account and post your own quick message in the thread linked above now. It only takes a minute, and it could make a real difference! :)

Where in that 2K blog post does it say you need a picture? Or is that what you were told after contacting 2K Support?

That is what 2K Support will tell you when you contact them, no they didn't put that in there post, which would have saved them a lot of people making support requests if they know they don't know were there boxes/disks are...

I think you all should move on and start playing CIV V . It has got animated leaders heads and stuff.

about the only upgrade.

Actually, in multiplayer - essentially the focus of this topic - it hasn't.

I 'moved on' to Civ V and after two months of not enjoying a single multiplayer game I'm here trying to figure out if there's anything we can get out of Civ IV.

Given mine's the Mac version, it's looking unlikely -.-.

Gamespy is finally down. And there is no option for us to play on Steam. I cannot even comment or join the chat room on the steam server (it says I should have the game to access this option). And this Civ is utter nonsense. Looks like my time for Civilization series is over, which lasted for almost 2 decades. Need another good game series. Any recommendations?

I think you are misinformed. 2K has transitioned Civ4 to Steam. But you have to send them a support request as stated in this news release http://support.2k.com/hc/en-us/articles/201967707-2K-Online-Server-Migration-from-GameSpy-Technology Which I posted in reply #18 in this thread. You will have to send them a picture of your Civ4 CD and box, but they will send you a free Steam Key after that.

And yes you do need to own a Steam game to use Steam chats....that is a Steam policy to prevent people from using Steam for purposes other than playing games bought from Steam.
