The Garrison Unit Promotion says, "+10 Combat Strength when occupying a district or Fort." Does that also apply to when the unit is in a city?

Probably not, because when the unit is in a city its strength doesn't matter.

The city center is a district, so yes it applies to a unit in the city center.

Hmm - conflicting answers:
KrikkitTwo says "Probably not" and Dark_Jedi06 says, yes.

Anyone know for sure?

Well a city center is a district so it might, but the point is it wouldn't matter, because your unit can't be attacked in the city center (it can in other districts/forts)

Yes but the promotion does not increase ranged strenght but melee... So it probably "works" in a city tile but makes no actual difference.

Is that how the promotion is worded? I still haven't played yet...seems silly if it only applies to melee strength.

Its there to allow an archer to "garrison" a non city district/fort and be able to survive melee attacks (which they can't normally do)

Per Arioch's site, it's worded as "+10 combat bonus when occupying a district or fort"...which doesn't really help, because combat bonus seems ambiguous, it could apply to both ranged and melee strength or just one. I'll have to figure this out in game when I can finally play tonight.

pretty easy test. build slinger, take promotion, wait for barb in city.

Combat and ranged strenght are different values with different icons etc so pretty sure thats what it is :)

Anyone know the answer to this now? If not I will find out and try to remember to post next time I use an archer with Garrison promotion from a city center.

I'm 100% sure city center is counted as a district, and the archer's ranged attack from there gains 10 strength. Combat strength in fact applies to both melee and ranged attack.

Also it also applies to the melee units garrisoned at city center. Yes, when being attacked it doesn't matter, but when you attack from the city center it matters.

According to the Combat Info Panel the +10 bonus is also added to the ranged strength of my archer with that promotion when firing at a barb outside the city.

yea, the +10 flashes up when u rest the cursor over the target and see all the modifiers for wounded units, etc. Buuuut i dont think that it turns a melee 15 slinger into melee 25 for the purposes of increasing the cities value. not sure if that helps to answer what youre trying to find out - but a ranged attack from city centre definitely qualifies!

The bonus applies to the unit whether its ranged or melee (I'm assuming you're talking ranged though since that's the first promo an archer will get on the right side.)

The city center is a district, so if you place an archer in there with that promo it will fire off at +10 CS.
