Hi Grahamiam,

Welcome to the XTeam!! :salute:  Hope you can join us.

On to the game:
I like Redbad's city placement for a couple of reasons. First, I think we should work some with speacialized cities and what to build in them to get the most from them. Second, it gives a route to the Louis' home and, hopefully, a quick exit for him.

It will be interesting to see how the land area affects the Raging Barbs. In my practice gams, it was more open and less water, so they could spaw all around my capital. I would say the sooner we can get the hammer city rockin', the better off we'll be.

The other nice thing about the terrain is that we could post some Warriors, or later, Axes, in the Jungle to the southeast to intercept Barbs inbound and get promotions. Then rotate them after they have 10 experience. Louis will love when we send him 10 Axes all promoted 3 times. What promotions should we use? A mix of CR1 & 2, Cover, Shock and Combat2?

Nice job Bede. :goodjob:
Got a lot of ground covered and you did well with the huts. I'm wirth the Capt., got Barbs and lot my scouting warrior in my game.

@team, I think Gator is out of town on a beach somewhere cooler than central FL, I hope.

So how about the other Mass resident taking a turn, that would be you leif!

@leif, and I still owe you that ale at the BritBeerCo, let's do it before the Road Race.

Actually, I'm around but just swamped. Too much time working and I just bought a new set of golf clubs so I've been to the range twice this week. I can probably play tomorrow or Friday, so if leif grabs it now that would be great.

I'd also like to welcome Gman to the team. :goodjob:

BTW, I heard from Brad and he is doing OK. He may be returning in the near future. But I'm not sure if he'll be back before the next SG kicks off.

@Gator - Sorry, just got home from a beach party and I won't get it played this evening. And tomorrow I have a meeting most of the night, so it is yours, unless someone else can grab it if they'd like.

@Bede - Thanks for posting in the SGOTM02 sign up thread. Looks good. :goodjob:
Is the road race on the 13th of August? What time does it start?
Got to work it out with the boss... :mischief: ;) :D

Just got back in from work so no playing time tonight. I can definately play tomorrow night but if somebody wants to grab it first feel free. Just post a got it.

Actually I meant some date before the Road Race week-end. This place is a zoo on that week-end and since Tommy invented the thing his place is an epicentre of crazies in shorts.

Playing now, hope to have it posted later tonight.

move scout away from a lion
Nwarrior exploring

Heh!!, I used to be one of those crazies in shorts!!
But you'd never know it now...

Free between the 1st and 4th and the 7th to the 9th of August. After that, family life gets hectic with summer camps for teenagers and family vacations.

On the game:
Nice work Gator. :goodjob:

Hope we're thinking of a settler soon. Got to get control of the copper! :p
We've played 60 turns thus far, can't be long until the Barbs start exerting themselves. I think the terrain will help us alot. But it is important to get that settler out and get the city up and protected before the barb onslaught!! :mischief:

Good luck Redbad. :D

life can be so short ;)

Looks like I did too much exploring with our only 2 warriors. I should have brought them back closer to home.

With this level of barbs, do you build 3 or 4 warriors to start with and keep them all near the house?

@Redbad - do you want to roll up another start and kick us off with a new attempt? It definately looks like the first 75-100 turns are even more critical due to the barb activity.

   However, it is better in a practice game than a real SGOTM!! :D

I think we need to consider how we are going to deal with this before we start another. They are merciless!! And they show up from anywhere and everywhere!! :p

Do we build only warriors for the first 60 to 70 turns and station them around the city? Is it possible to get a settler out and protect the new city? It seems to me that without a protected source of copper or iron in our perimeter, defending the barbs is difficult.

Any ideas of how we can hold them at bay and try to expand?

I think my suggestions some pages back is stil valid

Train up a couple/three warriors and move them out to cover the hills and let the early barbarians train them up for us. Then if we happen to get Archery cheap, and get a barracks built we can train some archers for city, hill and forward forest/jungle defense. They don't do well in the open, but in a town or in cover are just fine against almost anything the bogies can throw at us. Barbarian Axes will eat warriors but don't do as well against Garrison archers with a few turns of fortification under their belt...

Finally, the fog of war needs to be pushed out to at least one hill's view outside the borders of any planned settlement. Keep some warriors on piquet duty at all times and try to keep a good circumference lit up.

I think where we went wrong is pushing the explorers a little too far before bringing them home. Also don't hesitate to whip a warrior in the capitol as needed.

You're going to want barbarians+1 as the optimum solution to the problem.

I think the remarks by Bede and leif are very valid. I followed the advices and started on building warriors. Research was for mining and bronze. Alas I don't see any nearby copper, but at least we can chop and pop rush. I emphasised growth in this starting position. We can grow to size 5 and are already at size 4. As there doesn't seem to be any nearby copper, I think research now should be for archery. It is quicker to reach then iron, and we don't have any guarantee there will iron neither.

Here's what happened:

4000 settle in place, research mining, build to warrior

3760 culture expansion, 2 huts visible

3700 hut gives 5 xp

ibt lion attacks and gets killed

3670 mining -> bronze, upgrade warrior (combat2 & archery) and heal

3610 buddhism in a distant land, spot another lion -> flee towards forest hill

ibt after 3580: lion attacks and gets killed

3550 as our warrior doesn't get any xp I send him to Kyoto

3370 warrior -> warrior

3280 pop a hut: 34 gold

ibt a wolf attacks and dies

3250 warrior heal

ibt after 3190 another wolf attacks and dies

3160 promote our warrior (combat2)

3130 bronze, revolt to slavery

3100 don't see any bronze, set research to hunting, warrior still has movement

The save is attached below.

The Turn Log:
Redbad played 30 turns, that leaves about 30 until the barb onslaught.
No Copper in sight and Redbad has begun researching towards Archery.
We have a few turns to continue searching for copper.

3100 BC – Let’s head west to the sea?

2980 BC – found some more spices, not much help however.

2920 BC – Found some lions! Yikes.

IBT
We defeat the lions. Warrior is 0.8/2.
Discover Hunting and start on Archery.

2890 BC – Kyoto grows to size 5, turn on avoid growth and micromanage one FP to a wooded plains hill.
Kyoto_2890BC0000.JPG

2860 Kyoto Warrior, start another.
Start moving warrior north.

2740 BC – Kyoto Warrior, start another.
Start the new warrior to the northeast.

2650 BC – Warrior to the north defeats a lion, now
Complete another Warrior in Kyoto, start another.
Start new warrior to the southeast.
We meet Queen Victoria to the North. Bid her a warm welcome!

End of turn report.
We now have 5 warriors and I have marked on the map with signs my recommendations for their placement. I wanted wooded hills for them but this wasn’t always possible.
Sitrep_2650_BC0000.JPG

Archery is due in 1 turn and I think we should change production to Archers. Once we have 2 or 3 in the capital, I think we should build a worker and a Scout or 2 to go out looking for metals.

Research, I think should be Iron Working next?

Avoid Growth is on for Kyoto.

I think we should take the gamble on IW if we arrive at the same sit in the sgotm.
Sure we may lose the game outright, but a little fogbusting goes a long way when dealing with barbs, I've found.
If it turns out there is iron nearby, then the teams who have taken the gamble will be miles in front.

No complaints about actually getting the training game up and running before another loss, though ;)
