Generating More Leaders

Besides fighting alot, are there ways to improve your chances of getting a leader?:king:

Play a militaristic civ.

Use your first leader to make an army and be sure that you get a victory with it, then you can build the heroic epic and increase your chances of getting more leaders.

There is some skepticism about whether the Heroic Epic does anything at all... Anyway, planning your fights wisely will help more than anything. In every battle there will be throw-away fights, like wasting a longbowman who's trying to penetrate your territory. For those fights, always use your elite units. The rule should be that every single undamaged elite unit attacks someone in every turn. But only let them fight if it's almost certain they will win. With this simple strategy I got 7 great leaders by 1000AD, on Diety and without a militaristic civ. That should be enough.

Excellent advice. That is what I have been doing in all my battles. I am playing 8 civs, Chinese, standard map on Deity and have had so many great leaders that I don't know what to do with them. I have rushed all wonders I have a crack at, and when I can't rush I built armies with them. I already have 5 armies of riders and cavalries running amuck kicking butt, and I have 7 spare armies sitting around doing nothing. I can't build troops fast enough to fill up the standby armies. I think having a Heroic Epic does help. I my game during the Ancient Age, I got only 2 great leaders, and I was fighting pretty much the whole time. It got better during the Middle Ages, but ever since Heroic Epic, I have been getting great leaders like crazy. I have been averaging a great leader every 3 or 4 turns when I am at war, and one turn I had 2 great leaders pop up.

Something Storm-br posted in another thread that may work (at least it worked the 1 time I tried it) involves a bit of save and reloading. Apparently the promotion code and GL generator code use the same random number (or are the same bit of code). So if you get a promotion (non-blitz), reload and attack with an elite unit instead, your chances of getting a GL are much, much higher. In theory, the converse is possible: if you win a battle with more than 2 hp remaining with a GL spawn, reload and attack with a veteran unit, it'll be promoted to elite.

The reason I said non-blitz is that a second victory in a turn by a unit seems to almost always garner a promotion. While this may increase your odds, it's not a near guaranteed GL like above.

[edit] Keep in mind this sort of exploit is pretty cheesy, and is the type of thing that may very well disappear in a future patch. Use it while you can if you're so inclined. :D [/edit]

In my experience you will not get a leader when you have one available. I have never had two leaders at once, and in a recent game, I had just used a GL that I was saving to build the UN, until this point, my elite units had probably won about 20 engagements without producing a GL. As soon as the GL was used to hurry the wonder, the next elite unit that won, produced a GL.

I am going to have to disagree with the statement that you can only have one leader at a time, using Modern Armor, i got two leader in one turn, and there fore had them both at the same time, also like said before, winning more than one fight in a round seems to greatly increase the probability of promotion, GL.

I´m sorry, but I don´t believe you. Did you perhaps use the first leader to hurry an improvement or create an army before you got the second one?

Next time, post a screenshot.

I have to agree with Dalamar. The last game I played, I had one great leader I was saving to rush longevity, and an elite unit produced another great leader in a war with Germany. I was playing chinese and I did have the heroic epic.

I have had more than one GL at a time. Once, while fighting the French early in the game, I had one enroute to my home territory, when I was awarded another.

Things that seem to help:

1. Stack several units together, always with a couple offensive elite units.

2. Choose when your elite units attack. Don't waste them in fights where you have a reasonable chance of losing them.

3. Don't let elite units, (especially those that are wounded), be alone. Always keep them stacked with some defensive units. Otherwise, these are the units the other civs will go after.

4. When faced with an almost guaranteed win, select the healthiest elite unit to do the combat.

5. Don't 'save' your leaders. Use them as soon as possible!

6. Alwasy keep an eye out for opportunities to cultivate your veteran units toward elite status. A continuous supply of elites are important for gaining leaders.

7. When ranging deep into enemy territory build some safe areas where your units can heal. Fortified mountaintops, with a few elite defensive units are ideal for this. Make sure you have defensive escorts for your elites to and from your safe areas.

Simply put, the more elites you have involved in combat, the greater your chances of being granted a GL are.

It seems that having two GLs at the same time is possible, but a real rarity.

My guess is that your chances of getting a second GL if you already have one on the map are dramatically reduced. I've never had two at once, and many others are skeptical that it's even possible. There are enough claims from people who have to convince me it's possible, I just think it's a lot harder to get a second one if you haven't used the first one yet.

I've also noticed that once you use a GL, you seem to get another pretty quickly. Either the "missed" GLs from when you already had one get saved up, or your chances are much greater right after you use one.

It'd be interesting to find out how the actual calculations are made.

I'm one of the skeptics that doesn't believe it's possible to have more than one at a time. It's easy enough to disprove -- someone just post a save game with two leaders. Its been asked for before, but everyone always seems to have already deleted the game or it happened two games ago or something. . . Go figure.

I usually save one for the Forbidden Palace, which I build in a distant part of the world, such as a continental invasion.

I did'nt know you were'nt supposed to get more than one, or that this was even a controversial subject, hence no saved game that I'm aware of, (though I will check). If/when I get another example, I will post it.

hi,

I have a question about using my great leaders. while I have had no trouble generating them I have had no luck using them to rush build great or small wonders or even building an army. how do you rush build wonders and make armies with G.L.'s? is there an obvious command I'm missing or is it perhaps a glitch in my game? any response would be most appreciated. thanks.

Not a problem really. I'll be happy if proven wrong, but I'll only believe it when I see it. :D

As for using the leader, you have to move the GL into a city. A new action icon will appear to build an army or to rush production. You'll only be able to rush wonders in cities that haven't had non-production shields added, that is, if you chop down forests to build that Granary, you won't be able to change production and rush a wonder in that city. You can probably still use the leader to rush the Granary, but it's a bit of waste.

When the leader is activated, look for the create army and hurry improvement icons at the bottom of the screen.

When a unit is activated in a town with an army, look for the load icon at the bottom of the screen.

I totally agree. Is it that freakin hard to keep the savegames?

Hurricane:

Again, I did'nt know this was a subject of controversy....hence, no saved games.

Loopy:

I've embarked on a task to acquire two (or more) leaders, but since doing so, I have seen NO leaders. Does'nt that figure?

Assuming that playing on the easiest level, with a militaristic civ should give me ample opportunity to create leaders. I've done this several times, and have yet to see a single one.
