I was doing really well and then I get to about early-mid game and start falling behind. I was going to post a bunch of screenshots but I wasn't sure what would be most valuable.

Please take a look at my saved game and let me know where my big errors are.

If you'd like more information just let me know. I'm really trying to get over the hump in this game and have a lot to learn!

I left Prince not too long ago so here are some thoughts :

Your land is not great but definitly workable. I think you were doing well because you grabbed the Oracle (without ind and marble, meh) and early coast with financial is ok. Now that cities and cottages are growing, you're starting to slow down. That and the fact that you have 5 cities, while Brennus has 13 for example.

City placement is not great. Walata should have been 1 NE to grab the wheat. Djenne should have been 1 SW to grab the clam and both wines. As a result both these cities are much weaker than what they could have been (especially Djenne). Worker wise you are too short, only 4 workers for 5 cities, you want 1.5 per city on average. Gao and Kumbi-Saleh are working unimproved tiles.

City specialization is not that good either. Capitol is geared toward production which is fine, but because of that you don't want to put your academy there. Speaking of which, you don't have any commerce/science city and the result is a horrible tech rate. You need at least one strong commerce city or else you'll have no beakers later (which is now for you :().

Diplo is bad too, nobody likes you, some hate you. You're the only one with your religion, you're isolated. Willem can trade with you at cautious but if possible you want to have a pleased/friendly trade partner.

The war : either take peace or attack. Which means you need construction for attack, or deal some damage to Khan because he wants one of your cities for peace right now. But honestly your situation can't be easily salvaged, especially on long term plan.

I hope you don't take it personnaly I'm not trying to be mean, but overall I think you should stick to Noble for now (that's what I would tell myself anyway :old:).

Thanks for the feedback and no worries about being honest.

How is it determined which city gets a particular resource which lies in between a city? I put those two cities you mentioned closer to the coast for more gold as I, well at least I thought, was making those a commerce (Walata) and science city (Djenne).

I JUST converted to Christianity. I was Buddhist before which is odd that two similar countries attacked me.

More cities and more workers, ok sounds good. Wouldn't that really hinder me financially though? The only reason I have coin right now is because I got outraced to the Parthenon and Zeus.

Thanks again for the help!

I think your question is about the city BFC (Big Fat Cross). Open your city screen and you will see which tiles it can work, notice that both wines and clams are outside of Djenne BFC. Ressources bonuses (like wine +1 happiness) are empire wide as long as they are wihtin your cultural boundaries and connected to your cities (roads, rivers etc).

I don't understand the question

Wine give happiness allright, but it also boosts commerce on its tile, and since these tiles are not worked you don't get this boost. Same for clams, you don't use their additional tile food, you only get the health bonus. Does that answer your question ?

don't build up a huge pile of money.
don't stop growth in cities far below the happy cap by assigning lots of specialists.
You don't need courthouses or markets yet.
Toku needs to die.
Why did you convert to christianity and not buddism?
You can still found 2 cities 1E of the weat and 1S of the clams.

Right, I get that the resources are civ wide...but as workable tiles is what I think the discussion was about, no?

Click on the city screen then assign a citizen (represented by a white circle) by clicking on the tile you want to work.
