I had a very resource rich game. Other civs did not have the resources I did. In the trade screen you can see how much an AI civ makes per turn. Trade a resource like food to them for a per turn gold amount that is the same as they make a turn. Doing this will slow his growth a good bit because he cant build another city. The AI civs do not like to go into negative gold per turn.

According to the xml file related to civ leaders, they cap the amount of lump sum or gold per turn they will trade. Per turn is capped at 10% for all civs, lump sum is capped between 5% and 20%.

This has been a common stragey since the early days of civ :D less money for them = less research and less miltary on the most part.

Also if you want to slow down there research go to war with them and constantly pillage and fortify on there mines and such. Don't attack there cities and waste units just let them chill out and ruin there improvments :P the comp will send units out all the time to try and get them back :D wasting there production and time :D

If you really want to stunt their growth; make sure that none of the enemy AI civilizations have the same religion. {-4 due to heathen religions anyone?}

Most enemy AI's go to war with each other if they have, "Annoyed."

Especially if one is weaker than the other. Just remember not to let the stronger AI consolidate his forces. Wait momentarily until the other AI is about to lose, and then flank the stronger AI; steal his more important cities; declare an armistice, and enjoy the benefits of being the hero to the weaker AI, who is now ripe to convert to your state religion, and from then on he'll be your friend for life.

This is a good strategy. In one game, I was able to found both Hinduism and Judaism. I took Hinduism as my state religion and spread it to the guy beside me and then sent a Jewish missionary down to the civ on the other side of him, which converted his empire. That got me a nice, peaceful border and two civs that focused on pounding each other.

I was able to build up a tech lead (thanks in part to their funding me :) ) and then run over the both of them.

I allways try to pit the AI against itself as a way to keep the powerfull from becoming too powerfull. Civ4 makes this a bit better I think, in that I can get one civ to war against another without having to fight myself.

But here's my delima. I get too AI Civs fighting each other, and I start to feel left out, and I see all this juicy land and fat cities that are undefended, that I just can't help myself, I rush in and take over some cities - which makes one side or the other too weak, they get crushed, and I'm left with one big neighbor with a built up army, and my army is now spread too thin, and I'm easy pickins........:blush:
