Getting rid of barbarians

I've noticed in my games that the barbarian uprisings always tend to come from the same places - over and over again.

What can you do to eliminate them from appearing in the same place next time?. I know that they appear in "unsettled" territory. But what exactly does that mean? Do i have to build a city there to make it "settled" or can i just place military units there?

Yep - the barbarians come from the "unsettled" area of the map, ands that means a "larger" area that isn't under any city radius!!! Just make sure that there aren't any large areas outside your city radius and they will "almost" stop coming!!!

Death to the barbarians!

Just build a city in that place. I put barbs on raging hordes and after I settle massively, they never appear anymore.

Actually I think that to have roads and many units scatered around count also...

There are plenty of occasions when I don't want to start the barbs coming or don't care. It's no big deal if they capture a city of mine - they can look after it for a while. And it's good if they capture an enemy city, especially when I can get there quickly. That's because it doesn't matter what's inside them - even Wonders - Barb cities are SO CHEAP to bribe!

Why fearing barbs when you can use them? I always let them appear and buy them. That's a good way to have an army at "low cost". Nevertheless you'll have to be wealthy enough. I prefer "marine" barbs. I usually let them conquer one of my cities. They'll be producing units for me to buy. Eheh!

Keep in mind that killing the leader give you a ransom

Send engineers in and clear the land that they're coming from. I've heard (and have seen) that barbs only come from extreme terrains...never plains or grasslands......

Usually when I see the massive 20-30 unit revolts they come forests or jungle....

Build you capitol inland, away from any ocean squares. Then build your cities around your cap. this way u will never see a single barb in a raging hordes game. You'd think people would have questioned my tatics by now when i don't bother building defending units when raging hordes are turned on

The idea of surrounding your capital city is not bad but having access to the sea is vital. I do think so. Like in Colonization. You can trade easily. And it's also a good way for sending backup to your town, should it run out of defence units (all KIA). By land, you have the ZOC problem, whereas by sea, not.

Not quite. In the game I'm playing right, the barbs have staged four successive guerilla uprisings from a clear terrain square. I'm going to take guess here: they would be using forests or hills, but I have fortified units adjacent to these preferred squares; and therefore, they are staging their uprising in the next available square.

I think it's not just city radius, but actual units too. Seems to me they always pop up near my undefended cities.
